Hello Beach Bodies!

Well, it’s Pride Month! I hope you celebrated with Hayley Kiyoko. These weirdos are very proud of their faces:

The transition from A-Camp straight into Pride Month — which is also usually when we have our Senior Staff retreat — is always a wild one. The sun’s out and we’re hyped on community and everything feels so frantic and alive and sometimes that excitement comes wrapped up in panic… will this last? how do I keep this? will i ever get her/them/it/that back? what happens next? what can i control? what do i need to let go of? In a post-A-Camp instagram post, A-Camp staff member Gigler summed up so many of our post-camp feelings:

“#autostraddlecamp was so fucking surreal this year. Everything was different, but so much familiar. We’ve done this 10x. We did snow-camp and rain-camp, we did half-camp and wedding camp, we did slut camp and prank camp, this felt like transformation camp. Everyone seems on the precipice of something important. Lots of us were working different kinds of grief magic in our own lives when we arrived, some of us are celebrating personal victories… we had weddings, deaths, breakups, graduations, moves, new careers and art projects, and new dynamics between old friends, this camp was fully in flux. Everybody’s evolving and blossoming all over the place and it was hella healing to be around. I’ve never been more curious to see who we’ll all be next year, and what we’ll be making in the world.”

After our week in Big Bear I’m more curious than ever where the site will be next year, too — we have some major financial hurdles to confront right now, but a more concise and directed vision than ever before and an incredible team to pull it off. I know that sounds vague, because it is, because we’re still in the “sorting it out” phase — right now, for example, we’re focused on improving workflow and accountability within the Senior Staff. So, it’s one step at a time. We continue praying to Lesbian Jesus that y’all will stick around, because it is you that keeps us here through the ups and the downs. But hold on to your horses, we have big dreams.

We hope you enjoyed our periodic sojourn into the A+ inbox and also this anonymous sex diary. We’ve updated the A+ Priority Contact Box widget in our sidebar so that we can begin more actively sorting out advice questions and putting them in their own A+ posts for y’all. We don’t want you to be sitting there with the tampon all that time.

What’s the last show you binge watched?
The Exorcist! with Rachel! because we were both too scared to watch it alone. I also started watching Pose but I wouldn’t count that as ‘binging’ because there’s only 2 episodes out? It’s VERY good tho.

Describe the worst date you’ve ever been on.
I don’t wanna go in too deep but all I’m gonna say is that she was a Gemini and she got hammered at the bar and I didn’t and I had to handle that whole situation and it wasn’t good. However she asked me on a second date and I said yes for some reason? Maybe because she had a cute bunny?

What would be your superpower and why?
Honestly I thought I wanted to be Professor X when I was little and pull an Aquarius with world peace and shit, but I realize more and more as I get older I just want to be Magneto, like queer and powerful with awesome outfits walking around with my queer friends eating snacks you know?

Mmmm I’m a little ashamed but I would probably invite soccer players because they are so straight I would probably never meet them on my own? What’s something you’ve been really proud of lately?
I’ve been really proud of myself lately because I’ve worked very hard on my physical and mental health over the past year and that has allowed me to be more open to experiences/people which I’ve historically have had a hard time with. I’m also very proud I started picking up on my art practice again!

Fat, Trans and (Working on Being) Fine With It (March 2013) – Mey’s first-ever piece for Autostraddle, and FYI it holds up 100%.

If Joan Of Arc Can Do It, Why Can’t I? (October 2013) – A beautiful essay about coming to terms with your identity within a religious community known for both intolerance about that identity and a storied history of strong figures who dared to act differently, and succeeded.

Flawless Trans Women Carmen Carrera and Laverne Cox Respond Flawlessly To Katie Couric’s Invasive Questions (January 2014) – This piece went wildly viral and thus, I believe, had a serious tangible impact on the world. So many Autostraddle writers reported seeing straight friends share this on Facebook, along with messages about learning things from this story they hadn’t ever thought about before.

15 Fears I Faced in 2013, With a Little Help From Autostraddle (December 2013) – I know this was, arguably, just a throwaway end-of-the-year list, but I learned so much about Mey from reading it — there’s incredible vulnerability, self-deprecation, gratitude and also SO MUCH WIT.

We can talk and talk and talk about what we think a show is trying to say and who we think is saying it and who has a chance to be heard, but nothing replaces actually being there. It’s a bittersweet story, now, after what happened with Jeffery Tambor — but it was an uplifting one back then, and I’m glad we had the chance to tell it.

The A-Camp X Opening Night Video

This year, instead of imposing an elaborate opening musical number upon my staff, I made a video, which required imposing a script and casting and filming upon my staff. I couldn’t get the video to export properly until literally 10 minutes before opening ceremonies began, because I apparently really enjoy living right on the edge of catastrophe. Here you go!

This is such a well-reported piece, and taught me so much about how design and bodies and identities all overlap and intersect and the ways in which they could do so better. Also this article contains a bonafide chance for you to make a difference in the world and make speculums suck less!
