A Plus Podcast Episode Eight: NAILED IT

Hello, podcast friends and neighbors! This month on the A+cast we’re nailin’ it — literally and figuratively — with tales of nails in all their meanings. On your hands, in carpentry, in a super cool queer nail salon, at A Camp — they’re everywhere these days!

This chock-full-of-awesome hour of podcast beauty features an interview with Jasika Nicole, artist, actor (Astrid on Fringe, Intern Dana on “Welcome to Night Vale,” overall perfect human) and woodworker/carpenter, who talks to Autostraddle’s Gabrielle Rivera about the furniture she’s built with her hands and representation in DIY culture. London-based nail artist Allie Katz of Mx Katz Does Nails takes us inside their queer and trans inclusive nail art studio. Autostraddle’s Mey Rude continues her conversation with writer, journalist and trans advocate Janet Mock. In a blast from the past from spring A-Camp 2013, DeAnne Smith has her take on nailin’ it in life.

And for the first time ever, Krista Burton of Effing Dykes brings her hair-raising tale of fingerbanging gone very, very wrong to podcast form, with an audio rendering of the infamous Autostraddle post “What Lies Beneath… Her Fingernails.”

Plus, your podcast producer-hosts Samara and Julia consulted the stars to bring you your December 2015 Nail-O-Scope. (Anyone who actually paints their nail-o-scope will be crowned #1 A+ Podcast Superfan in the next episode.)

  1. I tried to download it to my phone and it just opens it up in a new window with a play button? How do I actually get it from the browser to my phone? I can’t use up that much data b/c I only have 1GB per month. Also, you can do this with the other A+ podcasts, right?

    • you might have to download it using a desktop/laptop situation and then add it to your phone’s library via syncing it?

    • If you’re in your desktop/laptop browser and click that download button, it should download directly to your computer, and then you’d transfer it like you do any music file — either sync, or just drag-and-drop while your phone is connected to the laptop with a usb cord. if clicking that arrow doesn’t download, i guess try right-clicking and “download linked file”?

    • Hope you got the chance to listen – let us know if you have any other issues! And yes, you can download our whole back catalogue :)

  2. I’m off work sick and listening to this when I can barely do anything else was such a joy!

I really liked every segment. The bit with Jasika about her woodworking and the context with her background as a queer woman of colour was fascinating. Brilliant interview!

Allie’s nail business sounds so awesome. I loved the premise: that everyone has nails and these deserve to be decorated regardless of gender identity.

I love Janet and adored her first book, really excited for the next one!!

DeAnne’s comedy was so good, and spot on about male comedians! So genius! Nailed it.

Krista’s horror story with the sound effects was HORRIFYING but also hilarious and so well read. Just…wow.

ALSO Samara and Julia…you are great hosts. Really liked the nailoscopes!!

Love the podcast, keep it !! :)

    • Thank you so much Abi!! We got some truly awesome people on this episode and I am really glad that they all shone through like the stars they are!!!

  3. I listened to this on my plane ride from Tulsa to Dallas and it was the perfect length.
The comedy set was hilarious and I am SO EXCITED about EffingDykes coming back!!! My newly out high school self is doing backflips. I still talk about that blog. It would be great if Krista could come back again to talk about pretty much any of her old posts (I like the Week of Debauchery, personally).

  4. Every time I read/talk about/(hear) the clean fingernails story, I realize by the end of it that my hands are subconsciously over my lower abdomen as if that could protect me. This podcast was awesome. ^__^
