The Comment Awards Are Remembering to Breathe

A small, brown and white dog peeking over their laptop screen, with a caption that says "Hey did you see that comment?!"

A week! It has been a week. A week it has been!

Words are failing me today, so here, have a Cyrus! He’s here to tell you: Don’t forget to take your meds, stretch a little, drink some water! And don’t forget to take breaks!

This week,Β Baopu #81Β helped us remember to breathe.

The team kicked off an open thread of good things that happened in 2020! Read this! It’s helpful!

Sarah interviewed Marlee Grace, the author behind the queer self-help bookΒ Getting to Center.

Kayla reviewedΒ Cracks, a boarding school monster movie where the monster in question is, in fact, very human.

This was a lovely journey: I Can Masturbate, No Hands: On Innovative Masturbation and the Power of Friendship.

Finally, feeling like you might be in crisis mode this week? Me too! Nat’s got advice for us on how we can prepare!Β

And then there were your comments.

On Tell Me Something Good Please I’m Begging You: A 2020 Roundtable:

The Dance, Magic, Dance! Award to Chandra:

Honestly my most creative accomplishment this year was recreating the entire movie Labyrinth from start to finish on an Animal Crossing island, and I feel like I should feel bad about that being my peak for the year, but I don’t, so there. I was totally unable to focus on almost any of my other usual pursuits, and this children’s game saved my mental health. Also we bought a house, which I never thought I would be able to do, and I know a lot of other people are unable to do. I’m very grateful for it. Even with the mortgage payments I’ve been able to come up with a budget that still allows me to donate to individuals in need and/or orgs that support them, and have committed to doing as much of that as I can afford on an ongoing basis.

And the Building Something Good Award to Quoll and Riese:

Turns out long distance relationships are excellent training for pandemic long distance. My A-Camp room-mate to partner became my fiancΓ©e and although we’ve had to postpone the wedding, I never imagined this life and how wonderful it could be. I also finally said fuck it to not being myself. Lego released the Pirates of Barracuda Bay: Ideas and my inner child rejoiced. I desperately wanted a Lego pirate ship as a child and my family couldn’t afford it. My fiancΓ©e and I have been building it together (long distance) this year. They have the instructions, I’ve the pieces. We’re on step 300 something and roughly 30 hours in. It’s taught us communication, persistence and developed a delightful vocabulary of lesbian names for pieces. Lego Masters: Queer Edition – we’re ready!

On β€œRuPaul’s Drag Race” Episode 1301 Recap: The Pork Chop:

The Creating Joy Award to a/s:

Ru just said to give someone the chop, so I hope the porkchopped queens give someone the photo of Porkchop instead of deciding to send someone home. I need my chaos demons to create joy, Ru!

On Come Vibe With Me: Stop Playin’ with me.

The Ready for the Wedding Award to thatottergirl:

Cannot wait to attend your and Lola Rodriguez’s wedding, she is amazing (and so are you)!

On Getting to an Imperfect, Queer Center: Interview with Marlee Grace:

The Reframing Award to Beth:

Aw, yay – thanks both for this sweet interview :) Marlee was the person who re-framed β€˜prayer’ for me and I’m forever grateful for that – it shifted everything. And you’ve reminded me I wanted to kick the new year off with this book (…but then it’s filled with *other* great book recommendations, nngh!)

On I Can Masturbate, No Hands: On Innovative Masturbation and the Power of Friendship:

The I’m In This Picture And I Like It Award to Noodlesforever:

*Clicks headline not realizing this article is going to be about me* You got me again, Autostraddle.

And on Pop Culture Fix: β€œImpulse” Star Maddie Hasson Casually Comes Out as Bisexual on Instagram:

The Sing Their Praises Award to mathilde:

WNBA players are amaaaaazing. I’m so glad more people are discovering their existence & activism. I hope they get all the praise, support, and celebration they deserve.

  1. Ahaha I did not expect a comment award for that comment, never mind a pull quote πŸ˜‚πŸ’š And Magic Dance was my island theme song, so it’s extra-appreciated.

  2. Aww thank you, glad to have my genuine fangirl enthusiasm for both Lola Rodriguez and Shelli Nicole acknowledged! I would love to play it cool, but I have already started planning for this wedding in my head (post-pandemic, of course) and am 100% willing to fly to Spain for it.

  3. This was A WEEK and it seems to have obliterated my Friday but never mind that, the real news is Cyrus !
What a gift. Thank You and thank Cyrus. What a great team you make !
