Fallon Fox is the first openly transgender fighter in MMA (Mixed Martial Artist) history. She’s in the Featherweight Class and the Midwest Training Center Association with a perfect 3-0 record. Fallon grew up in a religiously conservative family in Ohio, married her then-girlfriend at the age of 19, had a daughter, joined the Navy, went to The University of Toledo for a bit, became a trucker to raise money for surgery and got divorced in 2007. While driving a schoolbus she got into weightlifting and jujistu, eventually finding videos of female mixed-martial artist Megumi Fujii. She’d found her calling, and trainer Alex Trujillo said he knew she could be a professional fighter from the moment he first worked with her. Fox came out in an interview with Outsports in March 2013 after her first two initial professional fights, to much ensuing controversy. The online campaign “Fight 4 Fallon” recently launched to support her amid the scrutiny and negative attention she’s received since coming out as transgender.

Do you know what I like about this list? For the other Hot 100, I mostly just scrolled through and nodded when I saw someone I recognized, occasionally stopping to read something of interest. Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but is Ashlyn Harris publicly out? As far as I’m aware she’s pretty private about her personal life and hasn’t made any statements one way or the other about liking girls.
Yeah, I haven’t read or heard anything about her coming out publicly. I guess I could have missed it but I’m a huge WNT fan so I doubt it. The only thing I do know is that some players on the team choose to be more private about their personal lives and who they are dating. Ashlyn might be one of them.

While she has never made any statements one way or another, she has been vocally (on twitter and instagram) in favor of gay rights, in the same way that Megan Rapinoe always was before she officially came out. For example, she posted a picture of her wearing one of the Nike Be True shirts. It may be a stretch to call her out, but she certainly isn’t afraid of gay-friendly media.

Hope Solo is almost always the starting keeper, followed by Nicole Barnhart, followed by Jill Loyden. Ashlyn has been in the player pool for years, but only recently received her first cap (meaning she played a game) for the USWNT. Being a goalie is tough-you’re always fighting for one possible spot that is rarely subbed out during games.
However, none of this is to diminish her goal-keeping abilities. All four of those keepers are excellent and three of those four are queer. Speaking of queer, I’m surprised to not see Ali Krieger on here! She and Ashlyn are a couple and both currently play for the Washington Spirit, along with Lori Lindsey. I edited this because, as people noted above, it’s completely true that Megan Rapinoe and Lori Lindsey are the only USWNT team players who are officially out. So me saying “three of four” reflects popular speculation, to just be completely clear. That said, until recently, Jill Loyden was living in the same city as me with her (now ex) girlfriend. I know this because Jill and I have mutual friends, one of whom was charged with selling all of Jill’s old furniture when she moved back to NJ to play for Sky Blue. Some of the furniture had come from the apartment that Jill used to share with Abby Wambach-swoon!
Also, Megan Rapinoe’s comment on the photo made me laugh at loud. I don’t use twitter but periodically I check out the two of them because they’re hilarious.

I don’t get it… Models, feminists, actors, soccer players, musicians… Where are the economists? Climate modelers? Mathematicians? People who had to pass math class? Most of these profiles read like a queer studies adaptation of “the emperors new clothes”. Maybe they were all in the hot 100 – I missed that one.
