No Man’s Land Episode 8: The Beach House Decor Drinking Game

Carolyn’s Team Pick:

Have you ever ever wanted to decorate a beach house? This is probably what not to do.

In the latest episode of No Man’s Land, Shelly and Anna visit Holden Beach in North Carolina along with Shelly’s sister, Kaye. The beach house features soft lime green walls, wicker furniture and a lot of signs reminding you you’re at the beach, so of course, they play the Beach House Decor Drinking Game.

See wicker? Drink! Friendship beach theme? Drink! Sailboat key holder? Drink! Picture of the house that you’re in inside the house that you’re in? Possibly appreciate the reminder by now!

Shelly is an interior designer. It might be just my impression, but it seems like she’s also the drunkest.

Have you ever visited a beach house (or cottage or log cabin) like this? Does anyone else feel slightly offended by the aesthetics and also: pretty sure their grandmother has the seashell lamp in her living room?

No Man’s Land Episode 7: Reupholstering With Design Sponge

Carolyn’s Team Pick:

Furniture! Sometimes it gets really old and gross and covered in coffee stains and your cat (maybe several cats, maybe not even yours) started using it as a litter-box-slash-scratching-post the week you got her a new food bowl and then you moved and accidentally dropped it down the stairs. I’m just saying: sometimes you end up with furniture that has seen better days. It turns out, it’s not that hard to fix it.

In the latest episode of No Man’s Land, Shelly and Anna learn how to reupholster a gross old ottoman with Grace Bonney, the founder of Design Sponge, an excellent blog dedicated to home design. The episode takes place in the Design Sponge headquarters, which is fantastic if you are overly nosy and have been curious about what the office looks like ever since the site moved in late last year. I suggest jumping to 2:04, where you can see Grace rip up staple-gunned-down edges with her bare hands.

Have you ever upholstered anything? I really want to try it with this chair I have. Who has a staple gun?

No Man’s Land Episode 5: You Have A Nice Shelf, If You Know What I Mean

In this episode of No Man’s Land Anna and Shelly take to what one can only assume is the parking lot of their apartment building for a rather ambitious shelf construction project.

They are assisted in this shelf-making endeavor by Allison Oropallo. “Who is Allison Oropallo?” you might be asking yourself. I know I did. She was the first female finalist on HGTV’s reality type show All American Handyman. I’ve never seen it, but it sounds like Project Runway with nail guns. So I should probably check it out. Allison didn’t win the overall prize, but she was voted the fan favorite by, well, the fans. Which is nothing to sneeze at because everybody likes fans, especially when the A/C is on the fritz.

If you don’t have six whole minutes then I suggest jumping to around 4:30 to watch Anna attempt to use a sander. Priceless.

Let’s cut some wood in a parking lot:

My favorite quote of this episode is “No death will happen.” Because really, that’s the best guarantee one can hope for with any project involving power tools. AND no death happened. At the end of the day everybody still had their thumbs and Anna & Shelly have some pretty kick ass, non-Ikea shelves.

Have you ever made your own shelf situation? Did death happen?
