I don’t know which promise he was talking about.” (@nytimes)

UPDATE: Obama wasn’t actually making light of anything, the story was twisted to make it seem that way. Hm. Though I am still slightly concerned that he didn’t know what they were protesting. (@daily kos) (more…)

(They’ve got their own sneakers now.) Also check out our preview from the NewNowNext Awards — video and photos!

+ Today’s the day. The California Supreme Court has made a decision to uphold Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California by stating marriage is only between a man and a woman. However, over 18,000 same-sex couples who were married between June and November while the legalization was in effect will keep their legal status.

Riese says stuff: I think we need to step back and really re-evaluate our approach here. There’s so much strength in our community from advocates who’ve fought all their lives for things my generation now takes for granted. And as a queer girl with a gay Mom, I’ve been thinking about this issue for pretty much forever … and while we fully believe change is possible, and it will happen, I think it will have to involve experienced advocates listening to newer, younger voices … and similarly; newer, younger voices getting educated on how we got where we are today. The world is changing really fast, and the ways we used to do things aren’t working for our new problems. We need to change how we approach these struggles and face our opponents, and that won’t start at the courthouse, that will start by increasing our social, cultural & economic capital through other avenues. I have a lot of feelings about this. When I figure out how to put them all together, I’ll share them with you. (more…)

Daily Fix: YOU ARE AN ABOMINATION ALL CAPS! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED ALL CAPS!

+ Ted Haggard is writing a book. Probs his wife will too. Also, he voted for Kris Allen. Every time an asshole gets a book deal, an entire forest spontaneously combusts. (@queerty)

+ Adam Lambert’s brother Neil has been posting on the SomethingAwful.com forums all this time:

“Against all odds, Adam has been subtly trolling America by wearing ridiculous clothes and singing bizarre renditions of popular songs. Frankly, I think he’s thoroughly freaking out middle America … with your help, he can succeed in his mission! He’s up against the ‘safe’ choice. The guy is talented and nice and not scary and weird. Adam is talented and weird. I want someone like that to win just to see people lose their poo poo. Also, I love my brother and want him to sing.” (more…)

+ Did you hear the one about the Texas mayor who quit his job for love? See, Mayor J.W. Lown of San Angelo fell for a man — a Mexican illegal immigrant. Because same-sex marriage isn’t recognized anywhere for immigration purposes, Lown either had to give up the man, or give up the office: (more…)

alex_rieseToday on Autostraddle: Riese & Laneia read lesbionic young adult novels, Part TWO! And you should too! Also, obvs: Carly’s Tuesday Televisionary and our NYC Anti-Gay Rally coverage.

Last night A;ex, Robin, Intern Nicole and I (Riese) went to the Logo NewNowNext awards. I haven’t been able to watch the tape yet but I think it will involve a lot of tomfoolery and hijinks. We were at the end of the red carpet because of the patriarchy, but luckily I’m an experienced Obnoxious Person and I wrangled every vagina I could possibly find into our lair. KAZAAM! AND! You can see some of Robin’s awesome New Now Next photos right here. (more…)

Our video is in the top 100 (News & Politics) on YouTube!

+ A gay woman is attacked outside a Seattle club where Samantha Ronson was DJ’ing.  Samantha is, quite understandably, not happy about this at all:It’s 2009 people, why are we still fighting each other?” (@ohnotheydidnt)

+Did you watch GLEE last night? Did you LOVE IT? I actually maybe liked the preview just as much as the show itself, but regardless I’d rather watch Glee than anything else on the teevee, and they got me at the end with the Journey! Here’s 12 other TV musicals. You can watch Glee on Fox’s webpage. (@the daily beast) (more…)

Daily Fix – Three Rivers Run Through It

Also check out our new feature Girl-on-World, featuring a wild Berlin trip to see Metric and our Autostraddle Roundtable on Who’s Really Hot Right Now? (Besides our Hot 100, obvs).

Kate Moenning will be on your TV! (probs wearing more clothing than she did on The L Word) because Alex O’Loughlin’s ‘Three Rivers’ is among anticipated CBS pickups: “In a weekend filled with the broadcast networks furiously renewing shows and greenlighting new fall series, Variety is reporting that CBS, which will officially unveil its fall 2009 line-up on Wednesday in New York City, has given the OK to five new dramas: The Good Wife, starring Julianna Margulies; Three Rivers, starring Moonlight alum Alex O’Loughlin…” (@ ew.com/Entertainment Weekly) (more…)

Sunday Funday 5.17 – Yahoo Messed Up but The Lynch & Judge Judy Can Do No Wrong

Best Autostraddle Week Ever: For Reals. Riese interviewed and Robin photographed Celesbian Superstar Julie Goldman, lesbian love heated up on Grey’s Anatomy and therefore also on Carlytron’s Tuesday Televisionary, y’all creamed all over the Scorching Steaming Hot Autostraddle Hot 100 and Stef’s The Beat on the Street covered Amanda Palmer’s play as well as Vivian and Bat for Lashes shows. Also our latest girl-on-gallery is “Say it with a T-Shirt”!

Today: What a musical week we’ve had! Laneia (formerly known as Green) debuts our new Girl-on-World feature — it’s super-awesome, we’re really excitant about it and you should check it out rightnow! Also, our Autostraddle Roundtable tackles the tough questions — “Who’s REALLY Hot right now?”

Last night (Saturday the 16th) we had some serious internet drama with yahoo! finance pushing a blatantly bigoted political agenda on their site with a story that had nothing at all to do with finance. Luckily we were totally successful in getting them to pull it off, cover their tracks somewhat clumsily, and go back to “business as usual.” We’re really happy about this and thank everyone for helping and you can read all about it here: “Fixin’ to Punch Yahoo! Finance in the Face: #YAHOOFAIL.” (more…)

Daily Fix: That’s More Than a Name, That’s an Attitude.

Today on Autostraddle: Robin our photoblogger took amazing photos of Fischerspooner and PEACHES and Carlytron wrote all about it, and now you will look at it, and you will read it, and you will love it! Okay, big day for music because also Stef’s The Beat on the Street covers Amanda Palmer’s play, Vivian and Bat for Lashes … Also obvs the Autostraddle Hot 100!

AND! I don’t remember the idea behind this particular gallery — usually they are thematic (shorts for summer!) or particular to me and my interests (girls in hoodies! girls in boyshorts! girls in menswear!). So I have no proper intro for this idea which I really do think was once related to … something. Girl-on-Gallery: Say it With a T-Shirt!

Also! Also. Also. Today’s final Team Pick is very exciting for the Team!! Look at it!

Today on Autostraddle: Hey-o! What’s that you hear? Is it The Beat on the Street? Yes it is. Amanda Palmer wrote a high school play, and you can read all about it and other musical delights too. Also obvs the Autostraddle Hot 100!

+ I know I said I wasn’t gonna talk about Carrie anymore, but now I’m freshly obsessed with Shanna Moakler, who is both hot & awesome and has resigned: “I cannot with a clear conscious [sic] move forward supporting and promoting the Miss Universe Organization when I no longer believe in it, or the contracts I signed committing myself as a youth.” (@e!)

+ It makes us feel really happy that People Magazine’s headline is Wanda Sykes Becomes Mom of Twins! (@people)

+ The Nerve Interview: The director of Outrage on how closeted politicians are destroying America. (more…)

Daily Fix – Pow! Bang! Zap! HuffPo! O-Bawms! Lezberado! Exclamation Points!

Today on Autostraddle: GUESS WHAT?! It’s  Autostraddle Hot 100 time! Guess what else? It’s Carly’s Tuesday Televisionary time! And after that, it’ll be DRINK O’CLOCK, which’s our favorite time of the day.

Double X — Slate’s new online feminist women’s mag — underwhelms? overwhelms? What do you think? Over at Feministe, a great piece on why XX’s anti-Jezebel article fails: “Actually, attacking women is hurting women.”

Bette’s not gonna like this. Bureaucratic Maggots and all: How Hospitals Treat Same-Sex Couples (@nytimes)

Showtime’s still a big hit on YouTube, and The L Word still has a life online: “The network said it is averaging more than 500,000 video views per day on YouTube this year, many for its “Lezberado” channel dedicated to “The L Word.” Lezberado!??! That’s me, Riese! I’m mentioned obliquely in The Huffington Post! Now the Autostraddle investors will come ‘a running! The world is at our fingertips! (@huffpo)

Sunday Funday – GLAAD ’09 Does it, Talice Does it, Adam Does it, Lez Do It!

It’s Sunday Funday! On Sunday we lay our worries to rest and focus on happy things. So, if you haven’t already, check out our White House Correspondents Dinner round-up here, cool off with some wet girls, and pick your fantasy Moms!

+ In India, gay couples “marry” with parents’ approval (@ The Times of India): “These warm, happy stories may sound unbelievable given the stream of stories of social hostility against gay people, but the fact is that same-sex marriage ceremonies have been performed in Indian households, rich and poor, and in cities and small towns alike.”

+ Because I must scope the market like Sherlock, I picked up DIVA magazine yesterday. Hello UK! Perhaps I’m the last to this party, but Rachel Shelley randomly has a sex column?: (more…)

Daily Fix – Your Mom is Unconstitutional

ParentDish surveyed 10,000 mothers on which celeb they’d entrust with their children, and childless Ellen & Portia came out on top! Clearly two mothers are better than one. We were so inspired by this dubious poll that this weeks’ Autostraddle Roundtable asks the team: What two ladies would you like to be your two Moms? Here’s what Parentdish said:

Ellen and Portia 31%
Jennifer Aniston 22%
Rachel Ray 20%
Angelina and Brad 18%
Oprah Winfrey 9%

Daily Fix: The Gays in Maine Marry Mainly on the Plain

Hello! Do you live in Maine? I know a fantastic wedding photographer! Today on Autostraddle Stef interviews the super-famous queer-girl fave band Girl in a Coma. With much thanks to Reader Nyja and in honor of our douchebagette of the month Miss California — here’s some half-naked smokin’ hot celebs!

+ Maggie Gallagher says you should leave Carrie alone. Good idea. Carrie can then leave us alone, by letting us have the same rights as everyone else! Ta-da! Problem solved. Here’s a video of Maggie and Perez duking it out on Larry King last night, which I find upsetting in about 10 different ways:

+ Feministing argues: Stop fighting homophobia with misogyny. Jezebel breaks it down pretty well in their roundup of the Carrie Prejan disaster. (more…)

Daily Fix: The Art of Losing Your Crown is Not Hard to Master

Today on Autostraddle: Even Sudafed & Swine Flu Can’t Stop Carlytron from being Your Tuesday Televisionary. Also! Green & Riese Read YA Books for lesbians and want to talk about it. It’s really cool. You should read it.

Also! We have a special girl-on-gallery in honor of our favorite not-entirely topless model, Miss California. Although those allegedly additional pictures of our hypocritical honey apparently aren’t available at this time, we do have plenty of  photos of other girls — smart, non-asshatty girls — who also enjoy covering their breasts with a carefully placed limb! Will she lose her crown? We hope so!

Also we’re gathering a pretty kickass Intern Army, so keep your eye on the  Interns Page, where we will roll out our lovely ladies one-by-one as they advance out of Basic Training.

+ Um. REALLY PAPI? Network Television Shows Increase in Sexual Diversity (!?!) I don’t know what kind of Network Television Joel Booster is watching, but there ain’t no gay ladies on my primetime schedule. Granted the only show I ever watch on the teevee is Law & Order which come to think of it does feature quite a few psychotic lesbian killers and trannie hookers. Hm. Maybe I’d watch other shows if there were girls making out on them. Anyhow. (@the dec online)
