Happy Super Bowl Sunday Funday! I have cable for the first time in a long time, so I’m gonna be watching the Puppy Bowl and pretending it’s what everyone’s talking about tomorrow.
Whether your team wins or not today, here’s some reasons to celebrate.

IDK, it’s just that we should all watch this. #DeeplyMoved.
Meet Disney’s First-Ever Latina Princess
Everyone say hi to Elena! She’s a Disney Junior star without her own show, but let’s celebrate that she exists for just a minute.

Queer Lady Screen Stars Pick Up Even More Projects
You ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Leisha Hailey is stuntin’ in a new film and Ellen Degeneres is teaming up with Indina Menzel for a new show! (It’s called “Happy Time,” because Ellen is all about happiness.)
Obligatory image of B riding a unicorn on TV, because that’s a good summary of what we’ve gone over here. Also because hopefully this is what the ultimate future of queer women in film / television looks like.

These Red Pandas Made the Blizzard Kinda Sort Worth It
Not really. But they’re still cute as hell! You should click the link for video but I’ll just leave this here.
I think Princess Elena is based more on the Spanish than actual Latinas…also, the Disney spokespeople are really against nailing her down as Latin American, so that’s frustrating. I appreciate that she’s darker than Sofia the First, but c’mon guys, do we really need more white Latinas? Nah. Bring on the brown/black ones and not the colonists.
I am REALLY excited about the feminist bookstore livetweeting the Super Bowl. Besides the Missy Elliott appearance, it’s what I’m looking forward to the most. Bring on the opinionated middle aged second wavers. Love ’em so much. Toni and Candace are what I live for, anyway.
She’s Latina. In the article linked above, Nancy Kanter, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Disney Junior Worldwide, is quoted as saying “What excites us most is the chance to use distinctive animation and visual design to tell wonderful stories influenced by culture and traditions that are familiar to the worldwide population of Hispanic and Latino families and reflect the interests and aspirations of all children as told through a classic fairy tale.” Her character design isn’t particularly white either- she easily looks like she has non-white ancestry like the majority of Latinas.
(For the record, my mom’s Colombian. From what I’ve seen of Princess Elena, I’m happy about her.)
Yeah, but she’s tied to Sofia…and they still haven’t actually said Elena is based on Latin America vs Spain. And based on the place names associated with Sofia and Elena, it reads as Spain. In fact, pretty sure they actually said Sofia’s mom is from Spain. So.
I stand by the fact that everything associated with Sofia is a disappointment. So damn tired of white Latinas and Latinas who conform to white standards of beauty (which Elena totes does). Give me the short, round Latinas. Give me the Afrolatinas.
She looks Spanish. Actually, she looks like that noncommittal Teresa Barbie doll, you know, the one that could be Italian or Greek or whatever you’d like it to be. Not up for that. Sorry not sorry.
I’ll be following the bookstore (if not watching the game– I think I can imagine it anyway: man throws ball, scramble, everyone collapses). I have a default image I save as a generic, nonverbal response to, oh, a LOT of things people say:
i think they probably looked like that the entire time
The Princess Elena news is very cool. Thank you for reporting it!
I just want to point out that this -> “She’s a Disney Junior star without her own show, but let’s celebrate that she exists for just a minute.” isn’t quite correct. She’s going to first appear in an episode of Sofia the First, but she’s getting her own series: “Princess Elena of Avalor… will be introduced in a special episode of Disney Junior’s hit series Sofia the First beginning production now for a 2016 premiere. That exciting story arc will usher in the 2016 launch of the animated series Elena of Avalor, a production of Disney Television Animation.”
good catch! and also, that makes me v happy.
