To say that I’m infatuated with denim may be an understatement. A year ago, I was just tip toeing into reintroducing denim into my wardrobe. These days, my skirts have been collecting dust while my denim drawer is, to my astonishment, overflowing. Now that I’ve gained some basic jeans styling knowledge, I’ve been yearning for a masterclass. I’m typically very intimidated by on-trend denim; my wardrobe staples are oft a dark wash, slim, mid to high rise jean. But in the name of experimentation, I hooked up with ASOS to test drive some “of the moment” jeans from their Denim Bar.
This is the part where I let you in a little secret: I was very skeptical that any of the jeans would fit. First off, I was ordering bottoms online, something I never do unless I have a duplicate pair at home already. Also, pants shopping is typically a teeth-pulling excursion that I tend to avoid unless absolutely necessary. But, in the name of fashun I decided to subdue my skepticism. My sideeye was for naught; they all fit my booty just right. ASOS Curve denim was indeed ready for all this jelly.
Boyfriend Jeans
This was the style I was most excited for/most wary of styling. Since I’ve been feelin’ a more Riri/Twigs brand of tomboy lately, I seized the oppourtunity to rock a baggy, mid-90s style. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t remind me of my days on monkey bars in 1996… That being said, it was remarkably easy to style these “boyish” jeans. I don’t particularly care for the terminology “boyfriend” jean but fashion likes to have buzzworthy names for things and for trend’s sake, I will refer to them as such even while I’m internally rolling my eyes.
Look one is a nod to my childhood: simple striped top + Chucks are carefree and casual. Look two is a little more modern day classic: duster, crop top and wooden wedges.
Mom Jeans
Mom jeans have been on my mind for a minute. I’m a sucker for pants that are sneakily comfortable. With a high rise and loose, straight fit, this pair has been indispensable in my wardrobe. They look super fly with heels and just as good with sneaks, which is exactly how I like it. The secret is cuffing them to give a bit of shape. If you’re a shorty like me, this also helps them to not drag on the ground without having to tailor them.
Look one is one part your mama on vacation, one part street style maven. I can’t say no to a double (or triple) denim look! Look two is pure Scandinavian ease: oversized denim shirt and a lil’ pop of colour.
Overalls
Alright, alright. These aren’t technically denim overalls, but since jean ones are are in abundance, I’m hoping you’ll let this one slide. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that styling denim overalls just the same, so let’s just pretend. There seems to be major hate towards overalls, with some claiming they’re unflattering and childish. I’ve been jonesing for the mainstream return of these for about 3 summers now, so I’m all in. All onesie, all the time.
I’m a firm believer that you can bring overalls anywhere, so I styled them both high and low. Look one: eclectic casual in cowprint denim and little sandals. Look two is all business with a crisp blazer and heeled boots.
