In the time-honored tradition of teen movies, kids’ bedrooms are a great place for movies to explain the kind of person the character is without saying a word. Are their shelves immaculately decorated, with everything perfectly in its place, or are there clothes all over the floor and piles of unattended homework covering the desk? Is the room brightly lit and adorned with girly pink fixtures, or moody, sparse and dimly lit? Are the walls plastered with ripped-up magazine collages, posters of current pop stars, metal bands, pot leaves, puppies, horses, photos of friends or strangely vaginal art? Is the kid in question a musician, a painter, a writer, an athlete or just kind of a lone weirdo? The kid’s bedroom is not only a great way to develop the character, it’s also a time capsule to the exact period the film is set in.

This Tumblr “Teenage Bedrooms on Screen” celebrates the genre with an extensive collection of bedrooms from tons of classic movies and TV shows, and it’s amazing how many little details jump out at you when you least expect them:

Julie's room in Jawbreaker sucks because Julie sucks, and Courtney's room is amazing because Courtney Shane was amazing. Vylette's room, meh.

I don't remember whether this bedroom in Editorial Assistant Chelsey's favourite movie Jennifer's Body belongs to Megan Fox or Amanda Seyfried, but either way it's filled with framed portraits of Megan Fox.

I have now spent several hours perusing this Tumblr and learning its secrets, and I encourage you to do the same. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be rearranging my Nine Inch Nails poster to better accommodate my blue Christmas lights, like a normal 31-year-old adult.
