Aw man. This really hit home, I’ve been sinking back into depression lately with the feeling of m o v i n g r e a l l y s l o w l y but the strange thing is this made me feel better. Knowing other people have been there/are there I guess.

So, thanks, and I hope waking up gets easier, maybe headphones and bunny slippers will help?

I’m glad this made you feel better. Part of the reason that I make these comics is to 1) have a conversation about mental health, and 2) to not feel totally isolated in my own depression– which is, unsurprisingly, really depressing.

What I’d really love to happen ( and is kind of what’s already happening) is for people who are experiencing/have experienced these feelings to support each other and offer little tips or words of support, etc.

Thanks for reaching out! I love reading what people have to say. And I obviously need to buy some bunny slippers now.

This has been me the past few days…whenever I get really anxious about work/school, waking up is the biggest challenge!

I’ve been there, and some days still am. I love Shiloh’s suggestion of headphones and bunny slippers! Sometimes having your favourite smells by the bed side table helps too- so the morning has something pleasant to offer you without making much initial effort.
Fantastic detail in this work by the way, you are very talented.

been there. i dunno if you know or i’m being captain obvious, but mobile devices in the bedroom mess up the quality and length of your sleep… not that this fixes the SAD or depression but it could make a small improvement.

Readymade is totally right. The body is super reactive to light and because screens are backlit, the light from them stimulates the brain or something into thinking “oh, totally time for being awake. light = daytime. daytime = don’t sleep.” I’m not sure of the exact science of it, but giving yourself a half-hour of screen-free time before bed is supposed to help with sleep, which is supposed to help with depression/SAD.

        http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/12/23/reading-before-bed_n_6372828.html

“iPad readers took longer to fall asleep, felt less sleepy at night and had shorter REM sleep compared to the book readers, researchers found. The iPad readers also secreted less melatonin, which helps regulate your sleep. They were also more tired than book readers the following day, even if both got a full eight hours of sleep.”

I have to discipline myself to stop using my laptop and turn off wifi a few hours before bed. I notice I wake up much grumpier and groggy if I stay on it too close to my bedtime.

options: Mac has a feature that uses long wavelengths for the screen (reds and yellows) to simulate a sunset. supposed to mitigate the effect (disrupting melanin levels required for sleep).

i use a yellow lightbulb in my bedside lamp and dim it as much as possible. try to read a book before bed instead of netflixing to z’s. it’s hard tho, esp if i’m already restless.

also also, your body core temp has to drop in order for you to fall asleep, so keep the room cool to help you drop off faster. and and and some people find magnesium supplements v helpful.

So relatable. Especially the anxiety part. The weight of the worries. It’s easier to face the worries in the form of dreams, not in real life, not out of the safety of my warm blanket cocoon.
