Intern Grace’s Team Pick:

Brooklyn-based rapper Theophilus London is a friend of the queer ladies. He’s collaborated with Autostraddle-favorite Holly Miranda and wore a hat from all-women Smith College on the cover of his This Charming Mixtape.

More recently, London collaborated with Sara Quin (of “Tegan &” fame) on his cynical song “Why Even Try.” This is a pretty good endorsement for London, considering Quin has been vocal about her distaste for homophobia in the hip-hop community.

This is Sara Quin with London performing on the Late Show with David Letterman. She’s very cute. You’ll like it.

The song was released on London’s EP Lovers Holiday in February, but listen: The killer RAC remix is available for free from Mashable! It’s a little more ethereal than the original, has a lot more Sara and is very danceable. It’s a great summer song, and it’s kind of a departure from the typical Tegan & Sara affair.

London’s full album Timez Are Weird These Days, which includes the original version of “Why Even Try,” drops July 19.

Grace Ellis has been writing and making hack-job graphics for Autostraddle since 2011 and is a co-creator and co-writer of the comic book series Lumberjanes. She is mostly an intern in name only. (Mostly.) She lives in Columbus, Ohio because why anything. Also, she wants to write the Black Widow movie and feels like if she just keeps telling people, eventually she will be allowed to do it.
