Pop Culture Fix: Real Life “A League of Their Own” Pitcher Says Most Players Were Gay, Obviously

Do y’all think I should invest in an air fryer? Every recipe I look up these days is air fryer this and air fryer that. Feels like it’s time? Also it’s time for your MONDAY POP CULTURE FIX!

+ Frameline’s A League of Their Own screening featured pitcher Maybelle Blair saying that “out of 650 [players in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League], I bet you 400 was gay.” That’s over 60% and based on the fact that over half the girls from my little league softball team are now gay, I’d say that sounds just about right.

+ San Diego Comic-Con returned to form last week, this time as a for sure SuperSpreader event, but hey! There were lots of cool reveals! The hands down best part of the whole week was the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer drop which came as part of the Black Panther panel. The Abbott Elementary team did a virtual panel while also raising money for Scholastic Wishlists. (Quinta Brunson trying to get a Wakanda Forever screener was my favorite collision of these events.) Danai Gurira showed up for The Walking Dead panel and announced a limited series for Rick and Michonne. For All Mankind announced that they’d be returning for another season. Also, Wheel of Time! Nickelodeon announced that the first feature film from Avatar Studios will focus on Avatar Aang and his friends. Sarah Michelle Gellar is joining the Teen Wolf revival (in which Allison is alive???). And, finally, the full trailer for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

+ Ruby Rose is starring in a new heist film called Stowaway.

+ This NYT profile on Keke Palmer is your must-read for the week. It is SO good.

+ Joni Mitchell sang “A Case of You” with Brandi Carlile at the Newport Folk Festival.

+ This sure does seem right up your alley!

+ Lili Reinhart’s new Netflix movie, Look Both Ways, has a trailer. Natalie says it’s not the bisexual rom-com she was hoping for based on Lili Reinhart and also the movie name — but it still looks pretty cute!

+ Evan Rachel Wood will join her father on stage in a Raleigh production of, you guessed it, The Father.

+ But wait! There’s even MORE TRAILERS! Peacock’s here with They/Them, which appears to be a conversion camp horror show.

+ Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke’s new Netflix movie, Do Revenge, looks VERY GAY.

+ New mural of Brittney Griner and other wrongful detainees has Washington Mystics’ fingerprints on it.

+ Hey well here’s a headline: Stranger Things star Maya Hawke has an orgy in the forest and gets caught by police in a new music video.

  1. In the new Black Panther trailer we found out that Michaela Cole is playing Aneka who in the comics is the lover of Ayo who’s also in the films. I’m fairly disgusted and mad at the MCU after the Valkyrie nonsense in Thor, but just thought people should know.

  2. Autostraddle’s WOT coverage continues to be such a disappointment – there are tons of queer women on Twitter and Tumblr producing amazing content and analysis about this show for free. I know that there are now too many gays on TV to expect Autostraddle to cover all of them. I still really hope you all will consider paying someone to write thoughtfully and knowledgeably about the show as we lead up to season 2 – rather than the one complete mess of an article we got last year.

    • You sort of unintentionally hit the nail on the head here! Did you know that last year there were over 150 TV shows with lesbian, bisexual, queer, and trans characters? And over 25 movies? That’s over 175 things that we want to cover for our readers and we have EIGHT, total, writers and editors who mostly cover TV and film. It took me half an hour to even figure out what you meant by WOT — I even looked it up on Twitter and got a bunch of adorable cats saying WOT IS GOING ON, so not exactly a waste of time! — because while that acronym obviously means a lot to you, it’s just one acronym of hundreds of acronyms people are using to talk to us about their personal favorite queer TV shows. Most shows we cover get one post, because that’s all we have the time and resources to cover. We are a queer independent media outlet that has, miraculously, survived while other LGBTQ+ websites and verticals have been torn down to the ground. And during a pandemic, and a recession, and with our team navigating so much sickness, death, and depression. I’m really, really glad to hear there’s so many folks out there making amazing WOT content for free! And really detailed content, too, that makes the fandom so happy! We just do not have the resources to do that, but we’re always trying our hardest. I do have one tip for you: Our writers and editors — like all human beings — respond best to empathy and grace. No one wants to write for a fandom that’s going to pop up randomly and rip them to shreds. The world’s already hard enough. So next time you circle ’round, keep all that in mind!

      • I assume WOT refers to Wheel of Time since it was mentioned in this article. The difference I think is that WOT is actually a quality show compared to many of the other 150 shows that have queers in them. Sorry but a lot of those shows are just BAD!! I know we’ll not get the amazing high quality coverage of LWord or Gentleman Jack (thank you for those!!) but I would also vote for some WOT coverage. Thank you for considering.

  3. Re: the A League Of Their Own article, apparently my softball team is a statistical outlier ;-) Just one lesbian player (me) and a bi one (who’s in a relationship with a guy).

  4. Also See on Apple TV got a season 3 trailer. Not sure if anyone else is excited for that kinda mediocre television series but I did think Haniwa and wren were pretty cute in season 2.

  5. My air fryer is super convenient! It does take up a lot of counter space, though. But I can cook meat and not be afraid, which I am very bad at using any other appliance.

  6. Yes to airfryer. When I lived in the shittiest apt ever, I used mine all. the. time. Was far easier than dealing with turning on the stove just for fries, and it felt so fancy!
