Welcome to your weekly pop culture fix, a true journey into the human mind!
+ The 2018 Out 100 has debuted what might be its most diverse list ever, featuring, I believe, more women than we’ve ever witnessed on any prior Out 100. Nearly half of the honorees are women, nearly half are of color and at least 20 are trans. We’ve come a long way from the years when the covers of the Out 100 usually featured five gay guys and one straight woman — more recently, Samira Wiley and Ellen Page graced the 2014 covers and 2015 honored Roxane Gay, Abby Wambach and Hannah Hart.. This year we’ve got Cynthia Nixon, Sophie, Emma Gonzalez, Wanda Sykes, Indya Moore, Danica Roem, Hayley Kiyoko, MJ Rodriguez, Kate McKinnon, Nneka Onuorah, MJ Rodriguez, Michelle LeClair & Tena Clark, Amber Hikes, Sue Nabi, Kiersey Clemons, Hannah Gadsby, Alana Mayo, Natalie Morales, Janet Mock, Bella Thorne, Kathy Tu, Mia Lidofsky, Mara Wilson, Kim Petras, Abbi Jacobson, Sue Bird, Dominique Jackson, Cameron Esposito, Layisha Clarendon, Rain Dove, Jill Soloway, Becca McCharen-Tran, Lauren Jauregui, Diana Tourjee, Kehlani, Josie Totah… go check it out for yourself.
+ Gabrielle Korn, the lesbian editor-in-chief of Nylon Magazine who used to work right here at Autostraddle.com, interviewed pansexual musician Kehlani for their November cover story, and she was photographed by lesbian photographer Lindsey Byrnes. There’s a whole big section about her queer identity and the reactions to her pregnancy:
I’ve gotten everything from “I thought she was a lesbian” to “she was using queerness to promote her career, then went and betrayed us with a man” to “her baby father is just a sperm donor.” One, I never identified as a lesbian. I’ve always been pansexual. My first mixtape included songs about males, and songs about women. My first album had songs about a nonbinary ex, an intersex ex, and male/female exes. I don’t always make it a point to identify pronouns in the music because that isn’t the focal point. I think what steered everyone in the direction of categorizing my sexuality (which is still really narrow-minded) was my song “Honey,” and a couple of the features I’d done after.
+ Celine Dion has launched a gender neutral children’s clothing line.
I’ve always loved nununu and what they represent. Partnering with them to encourage a dialogue of equality and possibility makes so much sense. – Céline xx…https://t.co/wYoqnDhIIE#celinununu @celinununu pic.twitter.com/HWeO54h4NT

+ In certainly unrelated news, Nicole Cliffe has a hot secret tip about a older female singer who is gay now and very happy.
+ I got a press release today that informed me that 13th Gen Pictures has optioned the 1991 Jewelle Gomez classic “The Gilda Stories” and Cheryl Dunye is set to direct. This sounds…. incredible? Of the project, Dunye said:
“Jewelle Gomez is the foremother of Afrofuturism, which is wildly popular right now. The project of bringing a Jewelle Gomez novel to film or television has long been a dream of mine, and with THE GILDA STORIES, we have the perfect vehicle to bring her uniquely magical and transgressive voice to episodic audiences everywhere.”

+ Viola Davis Reveals Which Trans Activist Inspired Her HTGAWM Character’s Pansexuality
+ Heather will be reviewing this show soon but here’s an interview with Desiree Akhavan about it to tide you over —> In ‘The Bisexual,’ Desiree Akhavan Grapples With All Kinds of Sexuality: “I heard myself described as ‘the bisexual’ at every other introduction: ‘the bisexual filmmaker,’ ‘the bisexual Iranian-American,’ ‘the bisexual Lena Dunham,’ For some reason, hearing that word made my stomach flip, in a non-fun way. And I wanted to explore that.”
+ From ‘Sabrina’ to ‘Steven Universe,’ Family-Friendly TV Has Grown a Social Conscience
+ The ReFrame Stamp for Television, which just got invented, rewards “television shows that exemplify gender parity.” Their first 62 recepients include How To Get Away With Murder and all of their , The Handmaid’s Tale and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; Netflix’s GLOW; HBO’s Insecure; and The CW’s Jane the Virgin.

It always thrills me to see my reviews in the Pop Culture Fix! :D
The OUT 100 forgot about me again. One day…
Rachel, @caterrachel!
The fact that both you and Janelle are not on the list is just proof that it would be like including lions on a list of domestic cats.
I mean you’re all wonderful…but you couldn’t possibly be placed in the same category.
Did you just include me and Janelle in the same category? I’m beyond humbled.
So, am I missing it or did Out leave JANELLE F’N MONAE off the Out 100?!
Inexcusable!! ?
i’m not sure if this is what happened in her case but i think with some people they want on it, it doesn’t work out b/c of scheduling conflicts with the photoshoot
Have a bit of a music fix – an article about the Northern Ireland Music Prize, which includes new categories, including best single for the first time, where one of the nominees is non binary Kitt Phillipa, who gets a shout out from one of Snow Patrol
