+ Oscar nominations were unleashed upon the public yesterday and a full half of the films nominated were LGBTQ inclusive or otherwise address LGBTQ themes: Green Book, The Favourite, A Star Is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody. Several straight actresses were nominated for queer roles: Melissa McCarthy for Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman for The Favourite. Also notable is Black Panther‘s nomination for Best Picture, which also earned a nod for Hannah Beachler for Best Production Design, the first-ever Black person nominated in that category. Her previous work includes Moonlight and Beyonce’s Lemonade. Not one single woman was nominated for Best Director, not even the director of Can You Forgive Me?
anyway The Favourite's oscar nom is a huge win for representation for me, a Queen a lot of girls fight over but who ultimately just want to exploit me in the end

+ Deadline talked to Ceci Dempsey and Ed Guiney about the long road to get The Favourite made, noting: “While Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite is nominated in 10 categories and up front in the Oscar race (matching Roma), there was a time, a long time actually, when it could not get financing. Partly due to its then-unfashionable period genre, but mostly because of its female-led story, its lack of major male roles and its lesbian love story, the film was serially sidelined.”
+ Another quote for you: “The Favourite might seem like it has the familiar trappings of a period drama, but it’s much weirder than you’d think. It’s basically lesbian Phantom Thread for 18th-century England, just as dedicated to opulent food spreads and deliciously twisted psychosexual power dynamics.”
+ This year’s Sundance Film Festival will feature a few queer-women-inclusive films, such as Adam, directed by Rhys Ernst, “the tale of awkward teen Adam who spends the last summer of high school with his older sister in New York City navigating the city’s LGBTQ activist scene,” Girls Weekend, starring Amy Landecker as “a lesbian who grapples with her homophobic sister, people-pleasing mother and gun-toting dad while on a visit home to Las Vegas” and Work In Progress, about a “45 year-old dyke who falls in love with a millennial transman.”
