Hello and welcome back anther to Pop Culture Fix!
Cara Delevingne has joined Elisabeth Moss’ music drama, Her Smell, which already included Amber Heard and Pretty Little Liars’ Ashley Benson. The description of this thing sounds like Jem and the Holograms, with Cara playing the leader of The Misfits, and I am all about it.
Moss stars as Becky Something, a maniacally destructive punk rock star and leader of the seminal all-female rock band Something She, who pushes her relationships with bandmates, family, and followers to the limit as she wages a years-long war against sobriety, while attempting to re-engage the creativity that had once led her band to massive crossover success.
Delevingne will star as the leader of a new, younger female band called the Akergirls, which bursts onto the scene with Moss’ character becoming their mentor. The film features original songs written by Alicia Bognanno of Bully and Anika Pyle.
Disney is releasing a Hocus Pocus sequel in the form of a book and the protagonist, Poppy Dennison, is queer! (Detective Carmen Phillips believes The Disney Channel might be basing their TV movie off of this book!)
Janelle Monàe reflects on how the media covered her coming out as pansexual.
Over at Broadly, Jill Gutowitz explains why furtive lesbian glances are vital to her queer movie-going experience.
Lisa Miller wrote about the relentless torture of The Handmaid’s Tale’s second season, for The Cut:
The bravery of the heroine is intensified by her victimhood: misogynist culture raises up women who suffer. That June is pregnant, and an anguished mother, only enhances her heroism in the eyes of the show. The writers of season 2 know as well as the founders of Gilead that no trope is more sacred than motherhood. In an infuriating and grotesque reversal, Atwood’s feminist allegory has turned instead into a showcase of female abuse: returning to the scene, I noted how the camera lingered on June’s dripping blood. And I decided, I am done.
It’s renewal and cancellation season. Here’s what we know so far: Lucy Hale’s Life Sentence is out, which, gay-wise, isn’t that much of a loss. The 100 is in again (I’m just reporting the facts, don’t yell at me!). Transparent will end after next season (and Tambor is not going quietly). And Good Girls is in!
Arrested Development’s fifth season is real.

Vulture went inside Vida’a all-Latinx writers room and the result is magnificent.
In her Met Gala roundup, Carmen mentioned Kiersey Clemons’ new film, Hearts Beat Loud, and Variety loved her in it!
Riverdale writer Britta Lundin wrote a book about how fan fiction makes TV more diverse and I cannot wait to read it!
I really don’t want you to have missed this Grey’s Anatomy-inspired Twitter moment.
Sadly, I can’t handle The Handmaid’s Tale anymore
This : “Atwood’s feminist allegory has turned instead into a showcase of female abuse”. This happens far too often, and I’m thoroughly sick of it.
That Grey’s Anatomy tweet is amazing!
I am excited about the new Arrested Development seasons, but not sure how I will like it as an ex-Tambor fan. Ugh
Also an Arrested Development fan, and Tambor is pretty much on the no fly list. He sounds exactly like every other Sexual Abuser recently. I hated last season of Transparent, and made the mistake of watching one of Jill Soloways early movies and wow, it was pretty offensive. She’s on the no fly list too.
What was her earlier stuff and what she do?
Her Smell sounds amazing, but that description of the show has convinced me more than ever that we have to stop using the word “seminal” in this, the year of our lord 2018
