Tony Award season is upon us! In less than two weeks, the American Theatre Wing will hand out a bunch of statues to a bunch of really good-looking people who danced and sang better than anyone else did this year! I love the Tonys, and despite not living in New York and having seen exactly zero of the nominated shows this season and not actually caring about who wins, I am absolutely watching the awards. I’m a sucker for a good musical number, and Neil Patrick Harris hosting doesn’t hurt either.
So here’s a playlist of some of the notable songs from some of the nominated musicals this year. Not all of the nominees have released cast albums yet, so some of these tracks are demos or ripped from live performances, but they’ll all give you enough fuel to whine about whoever eventually wins. That’s what’s really important here.

OMG I’M SO EXCITED FOR THIS. Watching the Tony’s reminds me how much I love to sing random musicals at strangers!
I’ve been known to burst out with “there’s a bright golden haze on the meadow…” at the grocery story. I have a very nice tenor if I do say so myself.
Low altos ftw!
I’m still on a bit of a post-musical high after this past Sunday. I went to go see Bring It On: The Musical with a friend of mine. We both loved it. It wasn’t particularly moving or strong in terms of the story, but it was fluffy and fun, with (I think) a very catchy soundtrack. For me, that’s enough for it to rank among my top musicals.
The Tonys are legit my favorite time of year! It like free Broadway preview night, which I love. And I tend to win the Tony pool.
Also, I saw “Once” for my birthday and it was the most cathartic experience I’ve had in the theatre since “Spring Awakening”. Seriously, of all of the shows, see that show!
The Tony’s are by far my favorite awards ceremony (and frankly the best one their is). These people are putting on 8 live shows a week and not to mention the talent. I have only seen a few shows that are up for nominations this year but GHOST is amazing. And despite all the trash that has been said about Spiderman- I saw it in previews before all of the changes and I have to say there is nothing else like that or even being attempted anywhere. Everyone should go see a show.
Okay I get really confused about this sort of thing, but… didn’t Once come out like two years ago or something? Is it not just a movie? WHAT ARE THE TONYS.
*hides head in shame*
They turned Once into a musical, I think it just started recently. Falling Slowly won an Oscar for the movie. Tonys are for musicals. I think…
I absolutely love the movie and Glen Hansard and SUPER LOVE Marketa Irglova, so I hope the musical does them justice.
The Tony Awards are for any show that plays in any of about 40 theatres that qualify as Broadway. To be eligible for the Tonys, the show has to have opened within the previous season, which typically starts and ends at the end of April. They’re comparable the Oscars but for theatre.
“Once” opened at the end of February this year, and I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. I mostly think it’s fascinating to see a story go from screen to stage when the reverse is much more common. Also, “Once” has a real bar on the actual stage that is open before the show and during intermission, which makes it an automatic winner in my book.
I loved that movie and I love Glen Hansard, I would hope the musical lived up to it too (though I don’t know how it could without them haha).
“I have opinions about stuff I’ve never seen all the time” – Hunter
I have this whole riff on “Ruthless: The Musical,” and guess what? I never saw it.
I’m personally not a huge Andrew Lloyd Weber fan but I love Jesus Christ Superstar. I remember when I first heard it, playing the shit out of “Heaven On Our Minds” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDzxn66W3uM
I feel like this is the first year in a while I haven’t been obsessed with at least one of the shows.
Just saw Nice Work yesterday and Kelli O’Hara is freakin’ gorgeous as Billie. The show was hilarious, but still paled in comparison to O’Hara in that vest. Hoping to see Once this summer.
