Playlist: Tiny Songs For Your Sleepy Brain

Good morning! Actually, I take that back. What’s good about the morning? I find that nothing feels worse than peeling myself out of my delicious, warm, soft bed. And even when I’m physically out of bed, my brain stays set to sleep mode until I’ve had several cups of coffee. Until then, my eyes don’t open all the way, my thoughts are under water and the outside world feels generally confusing and intrusive.

Maybe you have the same experience. Here are some tiny, quiet and lovely songs to listen to as you sip your first cup of coffee and wait for your brain to catch up.

Note: maybe you love mornings, and if that’s the case, I’m really happy for you. But please know that we can never go on vacation together.

  1. OH MY GOD GABRIELLE THAT PHOTO.

KIMBERLY. YOUR FACE. TOGETHER. THE CUTENESS HOLY SHIT.

(i am NOT a morning person so please understand the level of enthusiasm necessary for me to type in all caps so early in the AM.)

  2. Lua or First Day Of My Life by Bright Eyes are usually my go to tracks, along with a bunch of Allison Weiss stuff.

    • I think if I listened to Lua first thing in the morning, I’d cry all day. You are made of stronger stuffs than me.

      • If I’m still half asleep, it doesn’t affect me as much. My tired brain doesn’t register that I should be crying because feelings.

  3. agh! the streaming is on private and I am in desperate need of this playlist on a effin Monday morning!

  4. I agree. Most stuff by Bright Eyes are always appropriate morning-friendly tunes. Birdy’s album is pretty awesome too, especially for coffee relaxing times. As is anythig by Sigur Ros, particularly: Med sud I eryum rar, Hoppipolla and Takk. Finally Iron and Wine: Flightless bird, American mouth. Oh oh and Frightened Rabbit are amazingly relaxing. Last but not least, Glen Hansard: Falling slowly and Star star. Now, go and enjoy, before I regurgitate half of my iTunes library.

  5. playlist is fixed, everyone go wake up to it!

that said, oh my god that photo i want to hug you both

  6. Anything by Fleet Foxes, Laura Marling, and the Head and the Heart are my morning tunes. This summer I made a playlist called “Folk-y shit” and listened to it almost every morning in my cubicle.

  7. Such a perfectly sleepy playlist. Maybe it’ll help me actually wake up to run tomorrow morning..
First Aid Kit, some Tablo, Simon and Garfunkel, Fionn Regan and Lucy Rose are also nice to crawl out of bed to.

  8. This looks like me in the morning, but you are cuter and I don’t have a dog. Imagine more grumpy, subtract dog, add pillow pet.

  9. I have been lurking quietly in the shadows but was inspired to post when I learned that other people listen to Julie Doiron, too! The Kings of Convenience make beautiful music to (slowly) wake up to.
