Playlist: Such A Nasty Woman

Oh, it was delicious, y’know. It was lip-smacking head-against-my-desk good. There he was, Donald J. Trump, hot mess of a man, speaking more clearly than he had in three debates, in a soothing yet ominous tone.

“Such a nasty woman,” he said, sweating slightly. I laughed until I cried. I cried until I laughed. I looked up “NSTYWMN” license plates and found out they’re available in my state. I changed my Twitter bio.

I’m a nasty woman and I’m okay with myself. I’m reveling in it: In being smart, assertive, ambitious, bitchy, bossy, badass as fuck, and blessed with eyes with which to see directly through men like Donald Trump and their obnoxious bullshit. And I am not alone.

Play these songs with the windows down today and drive past a white man’s house. Join the movement. Get nasty and get down with your amazing, empowered self.

  1. This is perfect and I wil listen to it while I lift weight and ignore “helpful” tips from gym bros.

  2. Ugh at Le Tigre and their lead singers awful politics; defending her anti-trans stance, saying that only trans men can be at MichFest, punching Courtney Love in front Curt and their kid, married to a Beastie Boy, I could go on. Then there is the rest of band calling trans women rapists. Just when you pull me back in you disappoint with suggesting a band awful politics.

    • This comment frustrates me, as there’s plenty to criticize in terms of riot grrrl and Le Tigre/Bikini Kill without criticizing Kathleen Hanna for words she didn’t say and actions she didn’t take.

I can’t find any evidence the band called trans women rapists. Kathleen Hanna hasn’t said anything about trans men being allowed at MichFest. She has explicitly said that trans women are women, though clearly she didn’t come to that conclusion when playing MichFest. I’m not defending that—I very much disagree with MichFest’s bullshit policies— but there are other things you said that I find misleading.

Courtney Love actually punched Kathleen Hanna, not the other way around.

And I disagree about the Beastie Boys, who wrote misogynist songs and then apologized for their ignorance and educated themselves. Normally I don’t give points to people for actually believing that women are people, too, but the Beastie Boys did work to atone for their misogyny and become feminist allies.

I don’t think Autostraddle is endorsing any band with this one, light-hearted playlist. I could go down the list and criticize any one of them (like—ugh, Meghan Trainor, body-shaming asshole!), but listening to someone’s songs and endorsing their politics is not the same thing. Should we speak up when artists do something problematic? Yes. But should we write off an entire website because of a playlist? For me, personally, I don’t think that’s fair.

      • I want to be clear that I’m not trying to downplay Le Tigre’s decision to play MichFest and their deserved criticism for that. I did just find other parts of your comment to be based on misinformation.

  3. I was scrolling through this thinking “if this doesn’t have No Scrubs on it I’m gonna be so disappointed”, but it was there, and I wasn’t and I should have never doubted you.

This is practically perfect in every way. It’s the playlist I didn’t know I needed in my life til now!

  4. I’m not a music person, I don’t even have a pair of earphones, but yesssssssssss i will be making excellent use of this playlist to get my game face ON. Thank you Carmen!

  5. Fourth debate: Hillary comes floating down from the sky on wires in a golden gown, like Uzo Aduba playing Glenda in The Wiz, waves her magic wand, and a young woman who wants more out of life and thinks a lot about rainbows lands her fucking HOUSE on the Donald. Election canceled, roll credits, EMMYS FOR EVERYONE BUT NOT FOR HIM.

  6. I’m surprised that Vanity 6 – “Nasty Girl” wasn’t on this list. Maybe I’m just showing my age…

  7. Literally just watched this- since I was unable to before- and oh, god. God. Props to her for standing her ground, calling him out, and that stone-face when he opened his gob. And so many props for this playlist.

  8. I saw a geek store selling tiny “Deadpool hands”. Little hands you can put on your fingers that mimic the hand the titular anti-hero lost and started to regrow in his movie.

I suggested they re-brand them as “Donald Trump Tiny Hands”. They agreed.

  9. I am watching the WNBA finals and they’re using “nasty woman ” as a compliment. After she gave a good assist “Maya Moore such a nasty woman”

    • Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1

    • Okay so I clearly got my Don’t Dream it, Liveblog It and Playlist: Such A Nasty Woman window confused while posting from my phone like some kinda n00b, but I don’t even give a fuck because this list is that great.
It’s like a wicked hard venn digram of songs I roll it, pop it, shake it do, songs I lipsync to, songs I sing along with, and songs I’ve never heard of but think will probably be good because thems some bad bitches that perform them.

      Carmen, this is fantastic.
      Brava.

  10. YAAAS! Nasty Women everywhere, “…Play these songs with the windows down today and drive past a white man’s house.” :D
