Playlist: Road Trip Turn Up

A lot of people find road trips relaxing. A time when their minds are free to wander because there’s nothing to do but stay on the same expressway until you have to pee or are running out of gas. My brain is constantly running that script in the background of everyday interactions. I accidentally block things out while my mind go off on elaborate slightly crafted adventures while I’m awake so usually I use drives to focus on music I’ve never been able to listen to without distraction. However there comes a time on every road trip where that just won’t cut it.

When Pandora has done everything in its power, you don’t have the patience to find new radio stations (despite the fact you don’t have shit else to do) and podcasts just won’t cut it, you put on THE playlist. The one that will get you through being parked on the expressway in Southern California with no air conditioning and being at a point in your life where you call 2 hours of driving the home stretch. It takes months to be able to enjoy it the way its maker intended: knowing every word, ignoring every stare, and blasting every speaker. This is the playlist to wake you up when you don’t want to stop and get coffee because that just means stopping to pee shortly after that. This is the playlist you want to announce your arrival into a city that doesn’t care if you’re there. This is the playlist that even after you’ve gotten a ticket, hit random traffic, and almost cried over a poorly prepared Subway sandwich makes you think, “Hey, the drive wasn’t THAT bad.” This is my break glass in case of emergency road trip playlist. I can turn up all by myself.

  1. Thank you! I was roadtripping for much of the summer and by the end, driving through the south with only Christian radio stations for days at a time, I had just about all I could take. This is what I was missing!

  2. how my car playlist right now reads:
    royals – lorde
    royals – lorde
    royals – lorde
    royals – lorde

    aaand repeat.

  3. You can tell that Royals has gotten big because I have heard it on the radio in Indiana.

I could listen to that allllll day.

^ on my last road trip, Subway basically made me a lettuce sandwich. Apparently grilled vegetables aren’t a regular Subway staple? That’s a thing I didn’t know.

    • Subway’s veggie delite is some serious bullshit. Actually, bullshit would probably be more substantive than that sandwich.
