Autostraddle Exclusive: Holly Miranda Covers The Deftones’ “Passenger” For You

Last week one of my favorite artists, Holly Miranda, recorded and emailed through a cover of one of my favorite songs. I’ve had a totally stupid grin plastered on my face ever since, it’s a really special thing that I love and so I want to play it for you.

The track is called “Passenger” and it’s originally by alt-metal band Deftones (feat. Maynard from Tool). It’s either about trusting someone completely or giving them head in a car, who really knows. You can hear the Deftones version here.

This cover was recorded as part of Holly’s PledgeMusic campaign, which is raising money for her next album. Plenty of great exclusives are still on offer if you want to get behind it.

  1. This is one of my favorite songs, for serious. I remember blasting it while driving in high school. (I was a Tool and NIN head in high school, FACT.) Fab to hear it covered

    Happiness.

  2. “It’s either about trusting someone completely or giving them head in a car” LOL
i’ve been in love with this song for years (mostly because Maynard’s voice is so freakin awesome). this cover is just as haunting as the original.

  3. thank you so much! Holly should really release a covers album. If you haven’t already, you should all check out her incredible cover of Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind.”

  4. Awesome cover! Thanks for posting. Holly is amazing. I cannot wait until her next album. The girl is crazy talented.

  5. This has been one of my favorite songs for YEARS, thank you Crystal!

(also AS readers might be interested to know that there is a live video of that Paramore chick singing the Maynard parts with the Deftones floating around on youtube)

  6. There was a time when I was 15 and this song would play almost constantly on my Discman. It’s awesome to see it evolve, much like my own musical tastes.
