The first round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship was this weekend and I don’t want to brag or anything, but I called two of the three major upsets from the 32 games played over the past two days. How did you do?
FINAL SCORES
#11 Gonzaga over #6 Iowa 92-86
On Gonzaga’s way to an upset, Courtney Vandersloot and Kayla Standish accounted for 64 of the team’s 92 points. Vandersloot needs 10 points to become the first player in NCAA history to score 2,000 points and have 1,000 assists.
#10 Temple over #7 Arizona St 63-45
#10 Marist over #7 Iowa State 74-64
#13 University of Northern Iowa almost pulled off an upset of #4 Michigan State but apparently the universe hates Iowa and so all 3 of their teams lost.
In other slightly less important, but unbelievably embarrassing record breaking news, #16 Prairie View scored 8 points in the first twenty minutes of play setting an NCAA tournament record for fewest points scored in a half. They eventually fell 66-30 to #1 Baylor. I wish I could say that was the only blowout but #1 Tennessee beat #16 Stetson 99-34. If you have any friends from Stetson, pretend you don’t know that.
The second round of games is from March 21 – 22 on ESPN2 or ESPN3.com. Past scores, game times, and the bracket are also available.
