John McCain Is Done Being an Assh*le Now, Has “Made Peace” With DADT Repeal

Perhaps John McCain’s New Years Resolution was to stop being an asshole or maybe it was to “admit defeat” (a sharp departure from his prior policy of “kicking and screaming in the kiddie pool of assorted defeats while the rest of us draw stars and rainbows over pictures of his face using MacPaint.”)

On Thursday, John McCain said he’ll “work to help implement the repeal of the military’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, despite his opposition to that legislation.”

McCain has found his zendo center and, as he looks forward towards the Ascension in 2012, has decided to “make peace” with the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal, which he was not a fan of. He says:

“I think I have to do everything I can to make sure that the impact on the morale, retention, recruitment and battle effectiveness of the military is minimized as much as possible,” McCain said on Fox Business. “It is a law and I have to do whatever I can to help the men and women who are serving, particularly in combat, cope with this new situation. I will do everything I can to make it work.”

That’s not all!

McCain showed additional signs of softening the harsh rhetoric he’d used over the past two years against another Obama administration priority: On NBC’s “Today” show on Wednesday, McCain said he’d welcome comprehensive immigration reform once the borders had been secured.

See you guys, 2011 is gonna be filled with moments like this one. Where people look in the mirror, think “God, I’m a douchebag,” and then decide “Hey, wouldn’t my life be SOOOO much better if I rid myself of my negative douchebaggy energy and embraced The Light?”

  1. Half of me is saying “wow good for John McCain for being a good politician and following along with a law after it`s been passed” and the other half is kicking and screaming for blood because he’s worse than the worst frenemy you had in high school.

  2. McCain: NO DADT REPEAL!!!!! THE EVIL GAYS WILL SEE UR WIENER!!!

    DADT is repealed.

McCain: Well, whatever is best for the service members.

But, in all seriousness, he made it pretty clear that he was sternly against DADT. I find his sudden change questionable.

  3. Two things:
    1. At first I read “he’s a big guy” as “he’s a big gay.”
    2. More like McPaint.

  4. Oh come on, bullsh!t! Election season is over, that’s all. Now he can go back to being a wishwashy suck up until he needs the voting power of the mentally deranged… I meant Christian right. Oops.

    • Exactly, he just doesn’t feel like fighting the overall current right now. He’ll go along with it, until he has a reason not to. Also if the implementation of the repeal doesn’t go completely smoothly, he’ll probably be one of the first to say “I told you so”.

  5. Maybe it’s just a mix of my distrust of politicians and not-that-great english skills and I have it all wrong, but judging from that quote, he doesn’t sound that less of an asshole – I’m reffering to his choice of words such as “minimizing the impact” and “helping to cope with”. To me it sounds like “man I hate my job but what needs to be done has to be done, ya know? I’m all awesome and professionnal like that”.

He’s passing the message that the DADT repeal is damaging but as a responsible altruistic citizen and good little Christian he just HAVE to help the poor shmucks who made it happen clean their sh** now. I wouldn’t call that making peace with it.

But again maybe it’s just my cynism talking.

  7. Yeah, um, I’m wary of this to say the least. Basically, I can’t give him any points for beginning to act like a normal human being, because that’s what he’s supposed to do. Maybe if his actions back up all those words. I think he’ll die before that happens, so we all know neither of those things will ever occur.
