Happy butchmas! Some of you might be here because the weather changed and you need warm things, some of you are like me and can’t wait to buy shit for every season, and some of you just want to look cute and don’t know where to start. Regardless of what brought you here, I’ve used my knowledge of seasonal trends, butch and masc iconography (boots lmao), and style experience to bring you the perfect accessory guide for you stay warm and look cute this holiday season!
Boots
We all know boots are a queer icon, uniting all gays; every queer person has at least one pair of boots and some of us have like 12! Whatever! For this season some boots are more in style than others, starting with the very iconic Chelsea boot. I picked these suede Chelseas from New Republic because most of their shoes are super affordable and really good quality; New Republic also just introduced an installment payment plan for every pair of shoes over $50, which is honestly amazing. (Though if you live somewhere with a lot of snow or rain, a suede boot might be too much work to keep clean and you want a sturdier option.) Thursday Boot Co. is a little pricier but has an amazing catalogue of boots; my favorite at the moment is the Diplomat. This classic moc toe boot will remind you of the Red Wing model, but it is more affordable without sacrificing quality. Next we have Aldo’s Afille suede Chelsea ankle boot; this one comes in black as well. This model might remind you of Harry Styles, who exclusively wore YSL’s model for basically three years, so if you like his style and the versatility of this shoe, this is a great choice. Aldo’s shoes are amazing quality and their suede really stands the test of time and even some stains (I used to rock their Biondi model daily and they’re still in amazing shape, they even survived A-Camp Wisconsin 2017). Next we have a few lace boots, one from Zara and a more military style from ASOS. Both these models are mostly for casual settings, maybe with jeans and chinos. If you’re looking for a dressier boot that can be worn with trousers and also jeans I recommend getting a brogue boot; these can be dressed up and will add some dimension and class to your more casual outfits as well. As a bonus tip, if you run small in shoe sizes I’d recommend you look into Tomboy Toes, who also have a great selection of brogues!
Hats
Y’all are gay, y’all know beanies. (I just realized I’ve been Jughead triggered putting this together.) If you wanna be everyone’s crush, just as Juggy has proved to be, beanies are IN. If you have short hair, a fisherman beanie will make you look dressy and nice and like you live in a wall-length glass window cabin somewhere cozy. Have fun with color! Find something that complements your skin tone. Reds and yellows are really nice to make a mostly dark-colored outfit pop; if that’s too risky, get something monochrome like this black and grey cable-knit from ASOS. If you have longer or even Timothée Chalamet length hair, a beanie with a puff will work great.
If you’re feeling a little tired of beanies, baker boy and flat caps are making a comeback. For inspiration on how to style them I’d look into David Beckham and/or Brooklyn Beckham who literally wear them all the time and make it work without looking like they’re cosplaying someone in Peaky Blinders! Finally, another cap option is a traditional baseball cap but with more seasonal materials. I’ve linked to this suede cap from Zara; it comes in tons of colors, so feel free to pick the one that matches your style/outfits the most!
Scarves & Gloves
I’m happy to tell you 20GAYTEEN keeps on giving: first cargo pants are absolutely in, now ANYTHING PLAID is also VERY in. Just like boots, plaid is our thing, so if you don’t have some already I definitely recommend getting a plaid scarf! Try to stay in red for that holiday spirit. If plaid isn’t your thing, a nice knitted scarf might be the way to go; I linked to this olive one from ASOS, but if you want monochrome check out the Wool Rib Scarf from Everlane. Try to get a scarf that contrasts against your coat so you can have some dimension to your fit instead of looking very flat. If you wanna do all black that’s fine; just get different blacks! For gloves, options are endless. If you’re thinking knit gloves, something with touchscreen capability is probably the best if you have music A.D.D like me and have to skip or change the song every two seconds. I picked the more traditional North Face Etip Gloves if you just want something that keeps you warm while looking slick. Finally if you’re more of a leather person, these driving gloves from Zara might be the choice for you.
Here’s to keeping warm and looking cute!
FYI Tomboy Toes is owned by a good friend of mine, and their stuff is amazing. I recently bought my first pair of shoes from them and I’m super excited!
Oh my, what lovely boots, I must get myself a new pair!
Nice one Mika
This reminds me that I really need to find myself a beanie that actually fits my head this winter…
I love all these shoes, but they are all way too big for my tiny feet! I DID get a pair of those brown workboots with yellow laces in a boys size 4 at Old Navy recently. They are definitely fashion over function, and I doubt they’ll make it through the winter, but they were cheap and I love them.
zomg HAPPY BUTCHMAS!! xoxoxox
Happy Butchmas to you too!
