Holiday Gift Guide: For the Queers in the Kitchen

The holidays are every cook and baker’s time to shine. There are hungry stressed out people everywhere looking to be fed and dazzled by the people in their live’s who enjoy spending time in the kitchen making delicious, festive things. There are also the ever important friends that don’t necessarily cook, but love to entertain and show people a good time. Given the amount of work that goes into keeping everyone happy and fed during this season it would be the sweetest thing to gift your culinarily skilled loved ones with new swag for their kitchen. There’s something for everyone in this guide, and every single thing (well, except one that missed by .99 cents) is $20 or less!

For the Bakers That Mean Business

If you have someone in your life who is really into baking you can turn the heat up for them with any of these gifts. This nesting bowl set is insane, there are mixing bowls, a colander, a mesh sieve, AND measuring cups and they all stack into each other for easy storage. What?! Amazing. Kitchen scales are incredible and make the task of measuring baking ingredients super simple. Everyone who loves to bake should have one, and if you give one as a gift you just might get baked goods in return. Silicone spatulas are also a miracle tool that every baker should have. Nothing is better at scraping down bowls and they are much easier to clean than spoons. Plus they’re heat resistant so they’re great for cooking and other hot things as well. Finally, we have the mighty oven thermometer. You may not know this, but pretty much every oven is a complete liar. Even the fancy digital ones. They will tell you that they’re preheated and set to the temperature you asked for, but if you pop one of these little thermometers in the oven it will immediately detect your oven’s filthy lies. Buy one for the bakers in your life and know that you’ve protected them from overdone crusts and burnt quick bread bottoms or underdone cakes.  You’ll basically be a hero.

For The Alcohol Aficionado

This is the ideal gift set for the person whose idea of serving dinner is pouring you two glasses of wine, three artisan cocktails, and setting out a selection of nuts and cheese. They are more interested in entertaining than cooking and if you buy them something that’s meant for the stove they will regift it at their office holiday party. Stay in their boozy lane with a wine aerator to get the results of decanting in a fraction of the time, ice cube molds for the old fashioned of their dreams, a recipe book for homemade bitters that would make a hipster in Williamsburg proud, and a serving platter for the adult Lunchables they make for dinner.

For the Neglected Vegetarian/Vegan

[1] Chef’s Knife, $9.98 [2] Spiralizer, $19.89 [3] Nut Milk Bag, $13.85 [4] Plenty, $20.99

Vegetarians and vegans do serious work in the kitchen, especially during the holiday season when meat is the centerpiece of most meals and they have to make options for themselves to bring to dinner. Prepping all those vegetables means having a good quality chefs knife is key, and the ratings and price point of this one make it a winner. Plant based eaters also really love veggie noodles. They love them so much that if you buy them a spiralizer, especially one with multiple size options like this one, they just might explode into a million tiny pieces of kale. You can also never go wrong with a nut milk bag for the vegans in your life, especially one made of organic cotton to keep any chemicals or coatings from seeping into their almond milk. Lastly, for vegetarians with stocked kitchens but sparse cookbook collections, “Plenty” is one of the best rated vegetarian cookbooks of all time. I’ve never made anything from it that I didn’t love and the photography will make you drool.

For the One With the Kitchen for Decoration Only

I have a few friends that have kitchens full of the most adorable kitchen things I have ever seen. I don’t know how they find them all, or who makes these disgustingly cute culinary things, but I know they are generally found in kitchens from which I’ve never actually tasted a single meal that was a product of being cooked there. This adorable stuff isn’t built for utility! Oh no, this is all esthetics honey. These are for the queers that want you roll over laughing at the lesbian perfection of their RV camper salt shakers but not actually expect them to season your food. The adorable veggie timer can be perched on the rim of their stove without fear of melting because it never gets turned on, and the Loch Ness Monster ladles will rapidly get stuffed with perennials and placed on the windowsill. The surprise cat mug will definitely get used though. They won’t be able to resist the compliments from guests gushing about how adorable the kitten hidden in their lose leaf tea is.

For the Chefs in Training

If you have or know a child that loves to cook, set them on their path to culinary success with one of these just for kids kitchen items. They can help you prep veggies and salads that aren’t too hard to cut with these child safe nylon knives. The edges aren’t sharp so they won’t hurt little fingers! I’ve never met a kid that doesn’t love cookies and unicorns, and this unicorn cookie cutter gloriously combines the two, plus there’s a delicious and easy to follow cookie recipe in the cooking class for kids cookbook. Finally, if you’ve got a serious pasty chef on your hands this baking set is perfect for them. Everything is scaled down to fit in child sized hands, allowing them to practice rolling out pie dough and bake mini versions of their favorite cakes and breads.

  1. I might be vegan, but I will swap my delicious all carb noodles for vegetable noodles when I’m dead.

Spiralising stuff is pretty fun though, I will admit.
