“I just lived my life and our band slowly became successful. I never would have wanted to go back in the closet, but it was funny to get put into this ‘out lesbian’ role. I never thought ‘I’m going to go out there and out myself’. I just was who I was and people got to know me.”

“I grew up in this really religious, very homophobic [environment] and at that time realised I was pretty gay… I’d played an open mic in New York when I’d visited my sister and they wrote up a little review of it. The guy actually mailed it my house in Detroit and I was so excited. I ran downstairs and I read it to my mother who was making soup. I was like, look mom, look. I read it to her and she said, “I think this soup needs more salt.” I was like, I have to get out of here now. So I just did it.”

“What I find very attractive, what I find sexual, are people who are unapologetic for who they are and comfortable with themselves. And I think with those two things sexual energy does come out because you’re not hovering or censoring yourself, you’re just being who you are. And being who you are is a very attractive quality in a person.”

“Life is like one big Mardi Gras. But instead of showing your boobs, show people your brain, and if they like what they’ll, you’ll have more beads than you know what to do with.”

“I’m the target. Yeah I can be the target, we make jokes all the time about ourselves. That’s how you keep yourself in check. I really like that I can be a “lady” and be messy and be a little crass, you know? I feel a lot of freedom in that.”

“We showed up at this big photo shoot in New York, and I get in there, and I look at the rack of clothes and it’s like dresses, pointy boots and stuff and I said to the photographer, “I wanna sleep with women wearing these clothes but I do not want to wear these clothes myself.”

“I want to show girls that you don’t just have to get married and have kids and give up your dreams. You can conquer the world. You can play in front of 20,000 people. And you can own that shit.”

“I guess I don’t think of it as feminism versus anti-feminism; I sort of think of it as feminism versus the world. I don’t think of it as a competition; there’s no winning. In feminism, you’re always trying to make stuff better. It’s opposition to which you cannot attribute a tally.”
