Robin Shoots The Cliks (with Surprise Guest Cyndi Lauper!)

This Monday band-mates Lucas Silveira (vocalist/guitarist), Jen Benton (bass), and Morgan Doctor (drums) of  The Cliks crammed into the humid basement of Mercury Lounge in Manhattan’s Lower East Side for interviews and our fun photo shoot!

They talked about touring, the buzz around their next album Dirty King (scheduled for a June 23 release) and their homeland of Canada (of which they are very proud, although they prefer Obama to the Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper). Initially an all-“female” band, Lucas has since transitioned from female to male and the all-queer group is regarded for its disregard of traditional gender roles and for bringing trans people into mainstream media.

I’d photographed Lucas once before with Cyndi Lauper before last year’s True Colors Tour, so you can imagine my surprise when Cyndi showed up to the show and even got on stage to sing. Lucas told us how inspired he was by Cyndi and it appears the two have become really good friends.  Lucas had plenty of True Colors stories — from dance parties on the Tegan & Sara bus to making out with Margaret Cho. Carlytron pointed out that’s probably pretty typical for being on tour with Margaret Cho.

Here are some images from the shoot and the live show.

Lucas told me that way too often photos of them smiling are featured.

I told him I would only use the serious rock band ones.

    how was the show?

    • Its funny, I never really listened to them, but the show was really solid and high energy. Lucas has a really amazing voice.

  3. I love the close-up black and white. Beautiful. They hooked me with Snakehouse, even though it’s a little edgier than most of what I listen to. I listened to it all last summer – great music for driving around the city with the windows open.

  4. These are amazing shots. I love the tone of the photos and the captured emotion.. especially the one of Jen rocking with Cyndi

  5. Sweet. Yet another one degree of separation for us. I feel like I need to go to NY soon for reals and officially meet you all. :)

I took some pics of the band at the Chicago show last week, but your photos are AMAZING. Really nice. And how beautiful is Jen?? Everyone always puts the lead singer front and center when the band is photographed … I like that you mix it up a little. Nice work. :)

And congrats to all the people at the NY show who got to see Cyndi sing with The Cliks. I saw them perform together at True Colors and it was seriously awesome. I can’t wait for the Dirty King album to drop in June.

  6. Love the Cliks – Love Cyndi – love the pictures!
