Pop Culture Fix: Aubrey Plaza Is Giving “A League of Their Own” on “Celebrity Sluggers”

Ding-dong! Here’s your Monday Pop Culture Fix, delivered pipin’ hot to your front door!

+ Aubrey Plaza must be feeling that A League of Their Own mania too. She was on Celebrity Sluggers last week. If I could offer just one bit of feedback: Lay off the high ones, Plaza! And speaking of your 2021 Holigay Heartthrob, her Happiest Season “jilted romance” led to Alison Brie being cast in her latest film, Spin Me Round. Writer-director Jeff Baena told IndieWired: “I know, especially after Happiest Season when people were vying for Aubrey and Kristen Stewart’s character to be together, that was definitely in our minds when we were writing this because Alison was also in that movie.” Sit tight, a review is on the way!

  1. That NBC news article is really cool to see! About time Autostraddle is getting some mainstream attention!

My reaction to the correction at the end of the NBC News article was equal parts face-palming and merriment.

“CORRECTION (Aug. 19, 2022, 12 p.m. ET) A photo caption in a previous version of this article misidentified one of the actors pictured in a group photo. Her name is Melanie Field, not Rosie O’Donnell.”

    How?!? Just how?!

  2. That anime list is terrible. Regardless of the politics, queer narratives have been a staple of japanese culture for centuries. The Mary Sue wrtier is projecting their own Western perspective on another culture and it shows, I can’t believe they would list Kill La Kill of all things first AND Legend of Korra at the end as if japanese anime has nothing else to offer.

  3. it’s been such a joy to see Barclay back this season! i’ve also been following casey rothschild’s season really closely; she helps run queer ninjas unite and usually runs wearing a bi pride flag or colors
