It’s our 44th Autostraddle Anonymous Sex Toy Review! Over the last few years, sex toy companies and stores have propositioned us to review their toys in exchange for, you know, their toys.
This week, one of our anonymous reviewers tried out the Dominix flogger, courtesy of Lovehoney.

According to Lovehoney, this flogger is “the perfect flogger for the beginner dom, and the advanced sub,” which I would argue is only partly correct.
The flogger’s jagged edges and snappy material deliver a sting even if the only force behind it is gravity. With even a little flick, it can be stingily devastating and leave obvious marks — a beginner would need to practice on an inanimate target before I’d be comfortable letting them hit me with this thing. On the flip side, if you’re a bottom playing with a really timid partner who just won’t hit you hard enough, this toy will let them feel like they’re being gentle and let you feel like they’re being mean simultaneously. In all situations, you will almost certainly require warming up.
To wield, the Dominix felt light and cheap, but balanced and easy to aim. On impact, the falls bounce, making the experience feel more intense but less precise and harder to control.
The ends of the falls were cut at different angles and were all slightly different lengths, which made it pretty stingy — if you wanted it to be even stingier, or a little softer, it’d be easy to trim the ends to be more angled or more uniform according to preference. The non-absorbent PVC also means it’s possible to sanitize the toy, which is a definite advantage over other floggers made with other materials.
My main critique of the Dominix as a physical object is that I could have made it myself for less money and with better materials. The flogger consists of PVC folded over the top of a thin wooden dowel and through a ring, wrapped in what is allegedly leather but feels similar to electrical tape. I did not find it pretty enough to want to display it, but the ring and leather strap mean that you could. (If you store it wrapped around itself, it regains its shape fairly quickly.) For almost $50, it doesn’t feel quite good enough, but just because you can make something yourself doesn’t mean you want to.
I found the Dominix to be a light, incredibly stingy PVC flogger that feels deceptively basic but leaves excellent marks.
$45 for that thing? Seriously, you can make one for $10 with supplies from Jo-Ann’s in under 10 minutes.
Yeah, I didn’t read the post until after I replied. I just saw the picture and felt the need to post.
That kind of seems to be the problem with most toys for hitting or restraining. It’s cheaper, and often better, to make yourself.
So, you say you could make this as if you know specifically what the materials are/they’re something you recognize from elsewhere – what is the “PVC” like and where could I buy it? Is it what people use to make gimp lanyards? It doesn’t look quite like that but I’m trying to imagine what else it is that everyone is familiar with.
