Bonnaroo 2010 Spotlight: Angus & Julia Stone

A few days ago our executive editor Laneia wrote about some of the bands she’s psyched to see when she heads to Manchester, Tennessee for the Bonnaroo music & arts festival. So as Jess G. did with the 2010 SxSW Spotlights, we thought we’d start introducing some of the up-and-coming acts that’re playing at the festival. Sound good? Okay!

So there are a bunch of great arts playing who we can probs all agree are amazing and shouldn’t be missed – Regina Spektor, The Gossip, The xx, She & Him are just to name a few. But you know about them, right? Yeah you do. So let’s talk about the acts that maybe haven’t yet pinged everyone’s radar.

First up is brother-sister singer-songwriter duo Angus & Julia Stone, who’ll be traveling to Bonnaroo from my homeland of Sydney, Australia. These adorable indie folk siblings first came to my attention in 2006 with Chocolates & Cigarettes, an attractively-titled EP that introduced me to two very distinct and somewhat addictive vocal styles. It was shortly followed by the debut album A Book Like This, during which Angus grabbed his suitcase full of nothing and made me want to feel things I’ve never felt before.

Now it’s 2010 and Angus & Julia have just released a brand new album, Down The Way, that is definitely worth your attention. Check out the music video for the album single, “Big Jet Plane”.

  1. Saw these two supporting Martha Wainwright 2008 & they blew me away. The mixture of his sweet tones (close your eyes it could be a girl)& her childlike voice with a bit of an edge to it made “A book like this,” a sound track to last summer.

    • I really dig “Just A Boy” from the A Book Like This record, it’s probably my favourite track of theirs. I’m jealous that you’ve seen them live, I’m yet to do so.

  2. THANK YOU soooooo much I love them!!! They are sooo pretty together….. standing alone they ‘re not that bad……NOT she is sooooooooooooo sexy!! They ooz the cool stick!

  3. i’ll be downloading their latest album before i fly out tomorrow! so excited about bonnaroo!!

you guys have to promise to meet me there next year. deal?

    • actually – the beginning with the smoke on the floor is intense… then it turns into a Titanic/Woodstock tribute. Which is okay too.

  4. That’s so cool AS featured them, they deserve to be even more well liked and famous than they are. They are finally coming to Ireland in July which im beyond excited about, ha, in all our excitment all my mates bought about 3 tickets each thinking we’d give the spares to one another so now we have about 20 spare tickets, ah, someone will get them! Someone said it earlier already and I totally agree, A book like this is such a summer soundtrack, cycling around the place in the sun listening to Mango tree or Paper airplane is just heaven in my opinion. Anyway, I wish them every success.

Oh, and I see the XX mentioned too, they are good live but fuckit they are so morose, it’s kind of irritating.

    • I was unsure whether to mention the xx ’cause I’ve heard such mixed reviews about their live act. Our music contributor Stef thinks they’re a little dull on stage and she has exceptional judgment so idk. One day I hope to be able to find out for myself.

      • Well exactly, you can only know when you see the act for yourself. I was really disappointed with them because they just looked so depressed and uninterested but some of my mates who were at the same gig liked it somewhat so I suppose everyone is different. Still, they could smile once in a while, and at least try to make the whole thing less boring!
