2015 Golden Globes Liveblog and Open Thread

Golden Globes - Season 72

The Golden Globes could be just another night of Hollywood self-congratulation, but it has three major things going for it:

1. Tina Fey

2. Amy Poehler

3. Copious amounts of booze

This year is Tina Fey and Amy Poehler‘s last year hosting the Big Event, which means it might be the last awards show I ever watch in my life. Or at least the last awards show I watch until Hannah Hart is finally hosting one of these things and people stop overlooking Tatiana Maslany. Some queer things to look out for tonight:

+ Pride is nominated for Best Comedy or Musical Motion Picture.

+ These shows with LGBT characters are nominated for Best TV Things: Transparent, Orange Is the New Black, Jane the Virgin, The Good Wife and The Normal Heart.

+ These actors are nominated for playing queer women: Taylor Schilling, Uzo Aduba.

7:55 I tuned into the red carpet in time to see Jennifer Anniston slap Kate Hudson on her buns, so that was special. And now it is time for the actual awards. Here is a GIF from Tina and Amy’s new movie, Sisters, which is mandatory viewing, obviously. (The GIF and the movie. Again, obviously.) I am drinking what we refer to as a “white trash White Russian” in my house. It’s a White Russian made with Yoo-Hoo instead of milk.

 8:10 Amy and Tina’s opening monologue is second only to the Vagina ones in terms of most feminist monologues ever uttered. Die, patriarchy, die! Hopefully this is only their last Golden Globes because they are prepping for a 2016 presidential run.

“Boyhood proves there are still great roles for women over 40 as long as you get hired when you’re under 40.”

So tonight, her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award.” – Tina Fey

8:15 Sad face emoji that Joanne Froggatt beat out Uzo Aduba for Best Actress in a Series, Miniseries, or TV movie, but two thumbs up emoji for Froggatt giving a voice to rape survivors. (Parenthetically, do you think if people on Downton Abbey had American accents, we’d finally see it as the primetime soap opera it actually is?)

9:27 Margaret Cho’s Kim Jong Un is back, with a really accurate critique of Orange Is the New Black: It should be in the Best Drama category because it’s funny, but not ha-ha funny. Also, Piper and Alex’s relationship is toxic. (Sorry, lesbians. It’s sexy as hell but but toxic as fffuuuuck. If either of those characters ever wrote in for You Need Help, we’d have to Olivia Pope them. SHUT IT DOWN.)

10:52 Julianne Moore wins best Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) for Still Alice and throws some shade about how she’s surprised people made this movie on account of the author of the book said no one would ever make a film about a middle-aged woman. It is the most emotionally devastating book in history, by the way.

11:02 Eddie Redmayne wins Best Actor for The Theory Of Everything. Boyhood wins for Best Motion Picture (Drama). Margaret Cho says she’ll be hosting next year, but Brittani has a different idea.

  14. The end of Tamborn’s speech had me tear up a bit, specially the dedication. Thankfully, my parents didn’t ask me why I teared a bit.

    • Me neither. Every year awards show remind me that a lot of these people are morally bankrupt rich white people gathered throwing themselves a fancy party to circle jerk each other off about how talented they are. The rape and North Korea jokes and fake concern over Freedom of Speech and Je Suis Charlie is just the icing on the cake. Oh, and weren’t these the same people who were falling all over themselves to give Woody Allen an award last year and continue to live up Roman Polanski’s ass? They can miss me with the Cosby jokes.

    • I feel pretty uncomfortable celebrating amy and tina considering how awful and White Feminitst™ their cosby shit was….they are in general.

  22. I can’t help feeling somewhat conflicted — and even a little bitter — that yet another cis person is rewarded for playing a trans woman. It’s hard to think of a single performance like that in the last couple of decades that hasn’t received, or at least been nominated, for an acting award, from Jared Leto to Felicity Huffman and many others.* I guess it must be that we’re such foreign, exotic, and alien creatures that pretending to be one of us in any remotely convincing way is so incredibly difficult that it’s inherently an amazing — not to mention brave! — achievement.

    Of course, on the rare occasions when trans people are allowed to play themselves, I don’t notice them getting too many nominations or awards.

    * Here’s the best I could do for a list with half an hour’s research (including actors who were either nominees or winners of awards): Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyer’s Club), Felicity Huffman (Transamerica), Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Crye), Jaye Davidson (The Crying Game), Chris Sarandon (Dog Day Afternoon), Tom Wilkinson (Normal), Cillian Murphy (Breakfast on Pluto), Vanessa Redgrave (Second Serve), Lee Pace (Soldier’s Girl), Terence Stamp (Priscilla Queen of the Desert — the one transsexual character), John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) (although I suppose there’s a question about whether Hedwig was “really” trans), Chloe Sevigny (Hit & Miss). I’m sure there are others.

    A bit out of proportion as a percentage of all cis actors playing trans roles, don’t you think? It’s not a guarantee, but it seems to me that if you’re a cis actor playing a trans role, particularly a trans woman, you’ve got almost a 50-50 chance of getting nominated, at least.

    • This is so true and was voiced so well. We’ve still got a long way to go but I think it is ok to celebrate the small steps forward if that feels good while still acknowledging the problems.

    I’m trying have patience and perspective and thankfulness in my heart over the Transparent thing but the more cis people get awards for playing trans women the more frustrated I feel.

    I’m not gonna lie, the feeling that I get in the pit of my stomach when I look at that gif of Jill Soloway getting that award flanked almost entirely by cisgender people, it’s not a good one. And the dedication to Leelah doesn’t really help. Like it’s kind of making me angry the longer I look at it. Like, is *this* really the change she wanted to see?

    I dunno. I guess this is what progress feels like.
