Where the F*ck is this? Now You Know.

Katrina’s Team Pick:

The Internet has exposed us to a million and one landscapes. Landscapes seeming either so common or so bizarre that they’ve been Tumbl’d, cross-posted, and made into one million generic desktop backgrounds. You know what I’m talking about. A palm tree reaching out from one corner of your monitor to another over a vast, blue ocean. A nude woman making kissy faces out the window while swimming in an indoor pool located in a high rise overlooking the highway. The rolling green fields that Microsoft was so fond of all those years ago before computers knew what Wi-fi was. They’re images you’ve seen a million times, and yet you still can’t answer the question: Well, where the fuck are all these places?

Sonoma, CA, apparently

And who better to give you the answer to this than the big, wide Internet?

Whereisthis.com is the kind of website that the Internet was made for. Where Is This is a place where curious Interneters post images, and other knowledgeable Interneters locate them. Scroll through 30 pages of familiar (and sometimes unfamiliar) landscapes. It’s wanderlust meets trivial curiosity. Feel like you’ve traveled the world. Feel like you know the answers to everything. Cuddle up with your girlfriend and a cup of tea and tell her about everywhere you want to take her using the bottomless budget that is your love.

we still don't know where this is

  1. I always thought that picture from Sonoma, CA looked a lot like Pullman, WA. When I first arrived at the WSU Pullman campus, that was my first thought.

  2. Sonoma, CA FTW. We get that nice green color from the light, refreshing rains year-round and a heaping dose of cow shit/industrial vineyard fertilizers.

  3. Hey! That kissy-face lady was not actually nude. Disappointment.

(I know and love this website, and it has made me want to visit the awesome looking Garden of Cosmic Speculation, so. It’s cool. :D)

  4. I’ve never actually thought about these photos as pictures of actual places before. In my mind they’re all just part of a magical island world that is simultaneously on a beach and in a rolling field and in the dark in a thunderstorm and on a pier all at once.

  5. Circa 2004? I’m still using XP. I am a loyal, dedicated user. I used Windows 98 until like 2004 though. I hate change.

Cool website though. I always assumed the XP background was fake or photoshopped or something.

    • OK, now I’m definitely going to spend upwards of a half hour looking at all the cool pictures on this website…

    • Get Windows 7. Vast improvement from XP (and the clusterfuck that was Vista of course). Stable at both x86 and x64.

      • I have it on my work computers. It’s fine. I just don’t really feel compelled to switch. The only advantage I’d consider is 7 allows more RAM to be used instead of capping at 3.25GB.

  6. The second picture, I would say, Goa? Mostly cuz there are a lot of cows in India…and they tend to wander into odd places…

  7. this website just answered 95% of the questions that kept me awake at night…
    anybody know who killed jenny?

      • you are so right!
didn’t she drown/died in someway related to a pool?
of course it had to be the dolphin trainer(shit, was that his profession?did not pay attention to his storyline.)

    • I don’t know who killed Jenny but I bet Detective Sergeant Sam Murray could solve that cold case.
If she gets some time off while in the US for that investigation she could even help Detective Jane Rizzoli with her coming out process…

  8. We are the creators of the page (a little sideproject) and this one is my favorite review! made my day! thank you very much.
