The Most Wonderful Time Of Year: Holigay Meet-Up Season!

Hello my darlings! We made it to the holigays! Can you believe 2017 even existed? I feel like this year lasted 17 years. Anyone else feeling fatigued, extremely anxious, overwhelmed, and a little sad? That can’t be just me, right?! Seriously, this was a true whopper of a year, and if you’re feeling a little tender or fragile, that’s okay. But the holigays are here whether we feel joyful about it or not, and that’s an excuse to do something nice for ourselves. Namely: hang out with each other. Yes, it’s meet-up time, aka my favorite time of year! Per always, our staff will be hosting some meet-ups in their respective cities and we encourage our readers (that’s you!) to host meet-ups of your own! For those who have never held a meet-up or attended a meet-up before, or for those who need a small refresher, let’s go over the details.

What is an Autostraddle Holigay Meet-Up?

An Autostraddle Holigay Meet-Up is literally any activity wherein you hang out with Straddlers and “celebrate” the holigays. Some examples: a cute ugly sweater party, a Friendsgiving Side Dish Potluck, an ice skating or snow shoeing event, a tree decorating scenario, a Hannukah party, a Christmas party, karaoke, games night, happy hour, brunch…the list is endless. The list is as long as your imagination! How do you want to celebrate the holigays with your chosen family?

Who can host an Autostraddle Holigay Meet-Up?

Anyone! Me! You! Your girlfriend! Your baefriend! Your theyfriend! Your cat! (Pro tip: Cats should be supervised when hosting and should always co-host with a human.)

What do I need to do to host an Autostraddle Holigay Meet-Up?

Decide what you’d like to do and then fill out this nifty form! Within 24 hours, the meet-up will be posted on our events page and it will also be added to a frequently updated list on this very post.

When should my Autostraddle Holigay Meet-Up take place?

That’s up to you! I would suggest your event take place anywhere from tomorrow to January 1. (But you might have a hard time getting people to show up with less than 24 hours notice, so think about that for a second when you create your event.)

I wish we could ALL hang out together in a magical virtual reality universe!

Ugh, same! We can’t do that quite yet, but what you can do is tag all your meet-up photos with our special holigay hashtag: #holigays2017! Our badass social media team will keep an eye out for tags and we’ll be re-posting lots of cute celebratory images on Instagram and Tumblr! Feel free to tag your cute Autostraddle holigay merch, also — I wanna see all you babes with your Mommi t-shirts and your robust pin collections!

Have more questions? Ask them in the comments! I’ll be babysitting this post extra hard, so don’t be shy — I am here to help and to make sure we all have a nice holigay meet-up season together! Let’s take care of each other and love each other even more than usual this holigay season, okay? We all need a little extra TLC after the year we’ve endured, and who better to provide that support than our Autostraddle family? I love you all. Happy Holigays!

Meet-Up Schedule

(I chose to organize this schedule in alphabetical order by cities, not states, which admittedly was maybe not ideal. But that’s the way it’s done! So if you’re scrolling and are surprised you can’t find your city/state, it’s possible that you either missed it because of confusing organization on my part, OR that there isn’t a meet-up scheduled in your city yet and you should host one! Either/or.)

Most importantly this is safe & consent space, so feel free to wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing.

Exact location of which area will be announced day of the event as its a first come first serve basis. Feel free to invite LGBTQ friends and family. This is a safe space.

  1. Ugh I have this idea. I’ve proposed it before, but I chicken out because I don’t want someone to risk endanger their self travelling at night, don’t have a way to RSVP and besides NOLA weather can change on a dime in winter sometimes. So last week’s RSVP is a hell no on the day.

I just want to share my holiday happy place with some holigays.

Celebration in the Oaks is light display in City Park.
There’s Papa Noel in his pirogue pulled by gators dressed as reindeer, rando dinos left over from the hey day of Jurassic Park, and normal Americana holiday light display.

But I can’t plan voluntary activities worth a damn.

  2. I don’t have the event planning capability, but please, someone in Des Moines please host a meet-up! In me you have at least one assured guest who will bring food.

  3. If you’re in the Northern California area please hmu because I wanna plan an AS holigay meetup this year. I can send you the link to our very teeny tiny FB group.

  4. Hey, if we only want our address to be visible to those who rsvp is that possible? I’d be willing to open up my family Hanukkah fundue and Savage Dreidel to any chicken cutlets with nowhere to go, but I’m not comfortable putting my address on the internet when 99.9% of people on this site are nowhere near me

    • hi bb, yes that is totally okay. what i’d recommend is either A. make a FB event and when people RSVP you can group message the gang your address or B. put your email address in the RSVP section and have people email you for address or C. if you wanna be SUPER cautious you can have folks meet at a spot NEAR your house (like a grocery store or something) and then when the group convenes on the day y’all can walk and/or drive to your house together. fwiw, C is what i was going to do if i had the event at my house. i feel ya on the caution. let me know if you have more questions!

  5. I am SO excited!!! I hope I can make it to the Portland event, it’s on my calendar and everything, but grad school is a monster that can swallow whole days and weeks without me realizing :/

  6. If anyone in the Edmonton, AB area would be down to co-organize and host something for this year’s Holigays festivities, I would be so, so down for that!

    • hell yeah! proud of you! a few comments down @addie84 mentioned being nervous about going to this alone — maybe y’all could make a pact to go and say hi to each other! SORRY FOR BEING AN AWKWARD MOM HERE YOU GUYS, I JUST LOVE FACILITATING QUEER FRIENDSHIP.

  7. Anyone in Wisconsin (esp. Madison/Milwaukee) want to meet up? Has cookies, will travel reasonable distances through time and space.

  8. Is anyone else planning on going to the NYC meet-up alone? I would love to go, but I’m so anxious about walking into a group of strangers and (irrationally) afraid all of you all will have brought a friend and I’ll be sitting there alone.

    • i can almost guarantee that Heather & Valerie would NEVER let you sit alone. but also, a lot of people go to meetups alone, especially in nyc. when i lived there and hosted meetups in brooklyn, i would say a solid 60% of the people who came, arrived solo. but people always made friends!

  9. Indianapolis event forthecoming! Probably events even bc we have an annual brunch too aaaaand I am only excited about the #holigays this year and not the #holistraights

  10. Anyone in the Southern NH (Nashua/Lowell/other nearby towns) area? My personality is better suited to organizing a filing cabinet than planning a fun event, but if others in the area are interested, I’ll be happy to try. ^_^

  11. Any one in the entire state of Montana on here? I’d love to host/plan a meet-up, but with Montana being as spread out as it is, I’m not sure how to even go about making that happen.
