The Autostraddle Insider Issue 90, March 2022

Letter From Your Editors

This month, while half awake at an Airbnb, I took one of my new favorite selfies in a Whitney Houston T-shirt and no bra. I was so excited (listen it’s rare I take a selfie I love) that I shared it in the office and Nicole and Laneia turned my middle of the night snap into inspo for this month’s theme: “wear a graphic tee that really describes your whole situation.” This is what we came up with.

This March around the Autostraddle way was really defined by two things (at least, for me): Our 13th Birthday Membership Drive and new writer season. On the writer front, when we last spoke it was also the last day of applications and we had north of 350 people apply. WELL! That number ballooned overnight and we ended up with just about 600 applications!!!! Kayla and I read all of them β€” and I mean we very literally put our eyes on every single last one. Then we met together to bring 600 down to 20. Now we are just at the halfway part of our interviews β€” which I am taking a break from to write you this letter. I’m more than a little exhausted at the edges of my brain but also bright and alive with this new energy that’s about to come at Autostraddle’s way! We have been planning to bring in the new cohort of writers for months and now we are just weeks away from the finish line! So even if that means that for today I’m a little short on words, I am overflowed with gratitude not only for all of our staff who was a big help in this process β€” Laneia organized our application form and submissions, she and Riese were also both ears to lean on as I navigated my first big writer hiring push as EIC, all of our writers and staff shared the call on social media, and Laneia coordinated all 20 zoom interviews across at least 4 or 5 time zones, a champ! β€” but also I’m grateful for you A+ members who have provided the support in order for us to dream towards a bigger Autostraddle future.

Speaking of the support of our A+ members, let’s talk go ahead and talk about our (successful, I might add!) membership drive this month. Fundraiser season, no matter how big or small, is always a rollercoaster ride of energy and hours in the office. It’s also a reminder of the resiliency and care of this community. There’s a lot of work to bed done, but there are literally no better people we’d want to work this hard for. On that note, deep congratulations to Nicole on a successful membership drive! I legit say this all the time but I am constantly humbled by Nicole’s work ethic, it drives me to work harder and show up as my best self for our team every day. OK!! Thank you everyone reading this for celebrating our 13th birthday with us and welcome to the over 300 new A+ members just from this month alone!! We also raised $17k, which really smashed our original goal (seriously, there will never be enough thank you’s) and… drumroll please… as of THIS VERY MORNING we have officially crossed seven thousand A+ members, the most ever in Autostraddle’s history. And we’re doing this together, in just $4 or $25 or, for some of you, $50 a month. All of those dollars count, it’s a mighty community that comes together from individuals who believe. Thank you for believing.

If you are reading this letter for the very first time β€”WELCOME!! β€” this is where I put what has been happening this month not only for Autostraddle behind the scenes and you’re gay dollars at work, but also musings anything that’s going on in our own lives as editors. I look forward to being able to share more of that with you in the months to come!! However for this very specific month, I’m hoping you all forgive me if this letter is a little shorter than usual because I am worn out and beyond tired from all of our big successful work!! So I’m going to end here with a huge “thank you and can’t wait to see you all on April” before I head back out to our next writer interview.

Meanwhile we had so much A+ content that I wouldn’t even be able to list it here! Be sure to check out anything you missed (erotica! advice columns! personal essays! roundtables! an AMA! and more!) and I’ll see all of you again in another 30 days.

Get some spring sunshine for us β˜€οΈ Love,

Carmen / Riese / Nicole / Laneia / Kayla / Heather / Anya

PS: Today’s Trans Day of Visibility (you know this) and I want to make sure we shout out Xoai’s excellent series showcasing new trans writers and asking: “Who is seeing us? How do we want to be seen? And at what cost?” I hope you spend time with those essays today. In fact, let’s go ahead make it your Must Read. See y’all in April!

Heather: she literally told me yesterday that i have a praise kink! and i was like “what even is that?” and she went on and on about this fan fiction she read where vilanelle likes to be called “good girl” and i was like “i just want you to compliment my pies! that’s all i’ve asked for!”
Kayla: hahahahahhaha heather dyinnggggg @ praise kink
i think i actually wrote villanelle having a praise kink into my recap of the premiere
Carmen (after returning to the channel): wait omg stacy teaching heather about praise kinks?

Let’s Get Ready to Rumble!!!!

TV characters Alex Danvers, Ryan Wilder, Waverly Earp, and Gigi Ghorbani are cut out in front of a background of basketballs.

Valerie: NATALIE
Natalie: I KNOW.
Valerie: you were right this year’s March Madness is so mean😭 it’s gonna be so much fun
Natalie: Carmen already accused me of a hate crime.
Valerie: HAHAHA
Carmen: I’m stuck on Tess vs Gigi (with her relationship with Bette) in round one
it’s too hard!
Valerie: Ryan vs Alex and Sophie vs Kelly feel especially mean
Ava vs Pam wasn’t particularly kind either tbh.
preying on my love of a long-standing character vs my feral attraction to both Bridget Regan and Poison Ivy
Carmen: I have somehow created a world where.. Gigi faces off against Gigi?

A screenshot of a bracket from Autostraddle's March Madness! In navy blue, with grey blocks, Gigi (with Dani) from the L Word faces off against Gigi (with Bette) from The L Word in round 3

Valerie: hahahaha honestly that’s impressive
maybe the only person good enough for gigi is gigi
Carmen: Honestly? you are not wrong.
Valerie: i don’t think i can choose between alex and ryan. i might have to fill out one bracket where i pick alex and sophie and one where i pick ryan and kelly
Carmen: Well this how I ended up in the finals, and I’m sticking by it

A screenshot of a bracket from Autostraddle's March Madness! In navy blue, with grey blocks, in final round Dani (with Gigi) faces off against Gigi (with Dani), both from the L Word

PR Emails That Lost Their Way

More often than we’d like, people email us about things that demonstrate they might be missing the point.

Subject: How Men Can Avoid Stupid Accidents

Hi Riese,
Here's the reality: Men's bodies change after 50 β€” including reduced muscle mass, slower reflexes, decreased balance, diminished vision, less flexibility β€” making them more susceptible to injury which leads to more accidents and more trips to the Emergency Department.

Here are some facts:
1. Accidental death is the third leading cause of mortality for men.
2. 90% of people who die on the job are men.
3. Men account for 3/4 of fatal injury costs and 2/3 of non-fatal injury costs.
4. Simple protective behaviors can make a big difference:
a. 90% of eye injuries are aboidable by wearing safety glasses.
b. 50% of hand injuries are avoidable by wearing gloves.
c. Wearing a seatbelt reduces injury rates by 50%.
d. Ladder safety - 500,000 falls from ladder every year, 97% occurring at home.
e. Falls are the most common injury in men over 65 - avoid unnecessary fall risks.
There are simple steps men can take to protect themselves, especially as they age, to avoid an unnecessary β€” and costly β€” trip to the Emergency Department, and long-term disability or even death.

"Avoiding Stupid Accidents for Men" is a chapter by Dr. Malcolm Johnson, board-certified emergency room physician, in the "The 2st Century Man," the most comprehensive and medically accurate men's health book ever written.

If you're interested in covering a story / article like this, I'm happy to share more.

What’s the worst date you’ve ever been on?

Once, a girl who I’d matched with on Tinder and never met up with texted me months later, asked me on a date, and THEN asked me to remind her of my name. She guessed β€œAnnalyse” which was honestly pretty close. Anyway, most boring hour of my life.

What’s something you’ve been really proud of lately?

My Letterboxd projects! I’m currently watching one rom-com a week that I’ve never seen before, and last year I watched over 100 movies made by Iconic Directorsβ„’.

If you could only use one emoji for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The little guy wearing the mustache & glasses disguise – it really is a lot more applicable than you think!

What would be your superpower and why?

If I could choose any superpower it would be invisibility because it’s useful in many scenarios that other superpowers would come in handy. You could also use it to sneak onto airplanes or trains (instead of teleportation) and you can hear what people say about you after you leave the room (kind of like mind-reading).

My irl superpower is that I’m great at spatial organization: loading the dishwasher, packing the trunk of a car, knowing how big of a Tupperware to use to perfectly store leftovers.

Who was your first woman celebrity crush?

Does my dance teacher count? She was basically a celebrity to me at age 10. If not, then Jessie from Toy Story 2.

What’s your #1 turn-on?

It’s cliche but truly anyone who can banter will charm me immediately. Also, a good smirk and nice forearms.

Failure Is An Art Form

We are here to normalize trying, failing, trying, and failing again!

“I missed a pretty major deadline!!!!!! Not for Autostraddle but for my creative/fiction work that I do outside of here. I like did the ‘right thing’ and emailed the editor about it and everything, but I keep almost crying about it???? Even though at this point, the manuscript has been turned in, everything is fine, no harm was caused, but IT IS SITTING INSIDE ME like a weird poisonous blob. I understand that my ‘guilt’ about this does nothing to help anyone, but alas. I will continue to suffer. πŸ™ƒ” β€” Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya

“I set a goal, publicly, or with the senior team which is close enough, that I would find time to ‘move my body’ each day during the member drive and reader, I did not. I got a few days in and then failed spectacularly. In good news, I’ve gotten to start going on my little jogs again over the past week!” β€” Nicole

“I had so much laundry stacked up this month that it was, at one point, as tall as I am. And no, I don’t want to talk about it.” β€” Carmen

A triangle divider icon in an iridescent blue gradient.

Congratulations You’re a Finalist!

We’re happy β€” but never surprised β€” that so many of us were “final girls.” From Kayla’s “What Horror Movie Stock Character Are You?” quiz.

what horror movie stock character are you? Results from the Autostraddle Quiz. The Final Girl comes out on top with 30.6% of results, followed by the Goofy Stoner at 19%. We Have the Wise Elder at 16.6%, The Know-It-All Nerd at 16.4%, The Killer at 8.3% and The Jock at 4%

This Shirt

A new segment in tribute to the ultimate cult classic Autostraddle column, Laneia’s These Shirts.

A polyester cool-toned pink short-sleeve button up top with an 80s or 90s looking black line and darker pink flower motif. The shirt is very loose and flowy which you can tell from the way it lies on the ground. There is a business card next to it for The 212 Club which is pronounced, according to the card, The Two Twelve Club. It's Amarillo address, 212 W. 6th ST. and phone number (806) 372-7997 are visible in the photo.

by Nicole

This shirt is unusual because it’s bright and pink and very, very acrylic and usually the things I wear are none of those things. Usually I wear black, but not this shirt, it’s bright and full of hope.

I picked it up in a thrift store in Amarillo, TX on a road trip, going out west, on my way to live in California. My ex and I were at a hotel bar when the bartender clocked us as queer and gave me a business card for The 212 Club where he was going to be running sound for a drag show that night. Naturally, we went.

Situated on a flat, Amarillo street, this bar was like so many other gay bars you might know. It had a stage for, mostly, drag performances, with disco balls and a pretty impressive lighting setup and a bar crowded with liquor β€” with a sweet touch. The bartender made his own ginger beer. Our host showed us around and introduced us to everyone after the show, and that was when I got β€” just for the moment I was allowed to as an outsider β€” what queer Texas hospitality means. When folks heard we were passing through, the next thing out of their mouths was immediately, without hesitation, β€œI’m having a barbecue on Sunday. Will you be around?” and starting to pull a phone or a piece of paper to scribble an address out of glittering drag queen dresses or jean pockets. By the time we went outside so our host could point out the lesbian bar just down the street, I’d been invited to too many cookouts and drag shows and brunches and peoples’ homes than I could possibly go to in a month, let alone a weekend. And that lesbian bar? Outside, our host pointed out that on weekend nights like this, people just went back and forth between the lesbian bar and the gay bar up the street. A group of queer women, sparkling with laugher and with at least one of them holding a glass from the other bar, jaywalked across the street to the 212 Club right then and went inside.

It was a beautiful, warm summer night in Texas and between the sweet ginger beer and the big, big-haired Texas drag and the overwhelming friendliness that I didn’t even know how to hold, I wished that we weren’t leaving the next day. I would come back, I said to myself. I still haven’t been back, but unlike too many queer spaces, the 212 Club is in fact still there, still hosting shows, still having BINGO. I also still have that really nice bartender’s number. And, at least, until the next time I pass through Amarillo, I have this shirt. It’s a pink that is a little out of style, the hem is unthreading a little, but it’s still good. It’s all summer and possibility and the warmth of queer strangers, and these things never get old.

There are two graphics, one of a hand giving a thumbs up in neon, and one of a sign in neon that just says "nice". They both flicker a little. Everyone except Laneia is smiling.

  1. I love this as always! The normalising failure section especially but also all of them! I am currently reading The Slave by Isaac Bashevis Singer and i do not know if i like it but i am glad i’m reading it. However i am at my parents so i might right now pick up some Tamora Pierce, throwback time

  2. loved all of this!! laughed very hard at Heather’s and Stacy’s praise kink conversation.
AND yay I read “We both laughed in pleasure” a few months ago (after a VERY cute girl I temporarily fell in love with recommended it to me after I met her at a trans and nonbinary creative writing workshop, which, tbh, is such a meet-cute isnt it) well anyway I LOVED the book. it hit very close to home in a beautiful way. especially the way teenage Lou justs lusts after The Beatles sold me immediately. We’ve all been there (my Tumblr was originally a Beatles blog lol)

  3. Laneia! Where do I get that shirt?! (And your ability to wear the hell out of some drawstring sweats?)

  4. Just commenting as I read instead of waiting til the end because I do not have that kind of short term memory.

Heather, if you are ever in Boston and in need of someone to compliment your pies, that is fully in my skill set. I am an excellent food complimenter and a lover of pies in a house full of people who don’t like cooked fruit. I’d even let you use our kitchen if necessary. (Non-fruit pies can also be complimented.)

  5. Love the final photo where everyone is so supportive and Laneia is like, β€œπŸ€¨ You could do better.”

  6. I was able to wrestle the keyboard from my dog Bocce for a few minutes at least (he calls me his rescue human).

I have to say the last collage of thumbs up is probably the most adorable collection of people I have ever seen in one collage. Cudos to all for just being who you are….

    Love ya all,

    Christina

Keyboard goes Back to Bocce for the rest of the day…..

  7. dearest editors and a+ members– thank you for the beautiful newsletter, love the shirt, and the note on failure. also. laneia and others who were in the editor chat (i was the one who had just been broken up with and was feeling okay and sad about it), i’m talking to the girl again </3<3πŸ€ͺπŸ™ˆ

  8. i love the insider!!! <3 FYI — i think the subheader under "what we're watching" didn't get written/put in?

  9. I love it as usual, love the books and movies, and especially the story about passing through Texas. Makes me want to go there too. Never thought I would ever want to
