Friends, it is Sunday, and it’s gonna be a fun day, you know why? I get to spend my morning with little kids, and then I’m gonna have brunch, and then I’m gonna finish cleaning my house! I’m so excited–last weekend was perfect in a different way (I saw Janelle Monáe, for one thing), but this weekend is perfect because it’s full of time and space to do what I want to do and what I need to do. I love that. I hope your weekend offers you similar possibilities! Okay, let’s go!
+ As we mentioned in our Fall TV Preview and have noted a few times in the Pop Culture Fix, Nicole Maines will be TV’s first trans superhero! Here’s an interiew with her in NYT.
Seeing yourself as a superhero is kind of the most validating thing. I hope that all people, not just trans people, fall in love with Nia and her energy and her as a superhero. And I hope it just grows and evolves from that.
TransTech also partners with other companies and organizations, such as Groupon and PayPal, to host the annual TransTech Summit, this year taking place on October 20. Ross said it’s a challenge to know which companies are really committed to creating diverse work spaces and those which use it as a buzzword. She looks for allies who go beyond just hiring trans and non-binary folks—making sure the environment is one in which they can grow, have access to leadership positions, and have a supportive community.
+ If you like themed flights across the Atlantic, have I got news for you: Virgin Airlines announced their first “Pride Flight”, with all LGBTQ cabin crew and pilots! There will be speed dating, drag bingo, and Judy Garland sing-alongs, as well as other entertainment!
+ The best of both world just collided: the lesbian elders from those “Old Lesbians” videos and Hayley Kiyoko met! It was very cute!!
+ InStyle published a piece on the secret style stars of the WNBA. Please note the ratio of not-straight to straight women they profiled. (We know style.)
+ GREAT NEWS: Two same-sex moms had a baby in China! The moms were mice, so you know, we’ve got a while to go. But still! Great news!
+ Danielle Brooks’ collaboration with Fashion to Figure is very very very good, and just went live! Go get some clothes!
+ Despite the troubling political climate in Brazil at the national level, Afro-Brazilian activist Érica Maluguinho just became the first trans woman elected to state congress in São Paulo!
Farewell fair maidens and theydens! I hope you do something that makes you feel powerful today. I hope you smile at least once. I hope you remember that you’re so so loved, by your friends, and also by me! I love you! Happy Sunday; go enjoy it!
Honestly Al(aina) the best part of Sunday Funday is always your intro words to us all. I swear it makes the day better every time.
Phyllis from the Old Lesbians vídeo is an A-Camp alumn
I’m always here for a Judy Garland sing-along!
My friend was telling me about Érica Maluguinho and how the majority of the community there is excited about it, but also worried that she will be a big target(because she’s openlly trans and pro lgbtq).
