Sunday Funday Is Proud as Hell With Stephanie Beatriz and Queer Food Culture

Happy Sunday, Pride floats! You look amazing and you’re doing Pride so well this year, I can totally tell! Here’s hoping you keep having a hot, sweaty, prideful month of June; we’ve got one week left. And happy Cancer season, I guess!

Radical Welcoming

Jeremy Allen writes about building tables for everyone and the ascent of queer food culture.

Food has become a trope by which the queer community has found commonality, sought visibility, championed diversity and encouraged activism. Be it intersectional supper parties, Puerto Rican solidarity efforts, dining spots that serve as neighborhood safe spaces or increasingly prominent queer culinary creatives, the food industry is mobilizing the L.G.B.T.Q. community.

In response to the current US administration’s unwelcoming behavior towards immigrants, Wildfang decided to donate 100% of proceeds from a jacket which says, “I really care, don’t you?” to RAICES. The original jacket sold out, but there are three new styles to choose from!

Out and Proud!

I’m still obsessed with Hennessy Carolina, and now you can read about her and her girlfriend, Michelle Diaz shopping for Pride!

First came the DM, and then came love. Cardi B’s little sister, 22-year-old Hennessy Carolina, has been dating her girlfriend, Michelle Diaz, for more than a year, and they met the way young people often do these days: over the Internet. It started late one night when Hennessy was scrolling through Instagram. “I was on my Explore page, and I just saw somebody with a nice outfit on and with nice bone structure, but her hat was covering half of her eyes. I turned to my sister, and I was like, ‘This is a cute girl on Instagram!’” she says. “Right away, I was like, ‘This is my wife.’ The outfit Diaz wore that made Hennessy swoon? A Ralph Lauren coat, Kenzo shirt and jeans, Supreme hat and gloves, and Puma sneakers.

Women, Memes, and Makeup

Nylon interviewed your fave (and mine), @notallgeminis about her Instagram astrology meme content.

Memes are designed to be relatable and connect to some universal feeling. But, I think, when you add the layer of astrology, it’s like, “Okay, this is a feeling, but it’s specific to people that you know.” And, you can decide whether or not you feel it’s accurate. But it gives you more of [an ability] to be like, “Wow, is this applicable?” and I think that’s part of why there’s been a rise in astrology. I think what modern meme creators have been doing for astrology is grounding those universal traits—traits we’ve always talked about—in behaviors that you see every day. And in a way, that makes it way more digestible, because it’s not as fun to say like, “Oh, like, I’m a Libra. I’m indecisive.” It’s more fun to, I don’t know, see a goofy meme about how they can’t pick their shoes or whatever.

Stephanie Beatriz wrote a beautiful, perfect, op-ed for GQ about being bisexual.

Speaking from personal experience, it feels so fucking good to be out. It’s still scary sometimes—I feel like an outsider so often. But those moments of discomfort are worth it, because living authentically gives me so much joy and feels so honest and good. In October, I will marry a heterosexual man. We’ll make vows that I will take very seriously—till death do us part. But I’ll be bi till the day I die, baby, and I vow to myself to always sing that truth.

  1. I’ve always felt that cooking can be very intimate and very queer. I work in a kitchen with mostly queer people right now and it makes the food taste better :p It’s my dream to open up a queer cafe. If anyone feels bored and wants to give me some general business pointers I’ll take them :D
