Not even a week after I reported that Dee Whigham became at least the 16th trans person murdered in the United States this year alone, I’m devastated to have to report the murder of another much-too-young Black trans woman, Skye Mockabee of Cleveland, Ohio. Mockabee was found dead early Saturday morning in a parking lot. (As a warning, that article does misgender trans women and use their birth names). Police said it looked like head trauma was the cause of death. Very few details about her life or murder have come out, but the fact remains, this is a tremendous loss for her family and friends and for the trans community.
Mockabee’s Facebook says that she studied at South University and worked at Chipotle. She has many pictures of her smiling and looking beautiful. According to Cleveland.com, Mockabee is the fourth transgender woman murdered in the county in the last four years. The others were Brittany Stergis, 22, Betty Skinner, 52, and Ce Ce Dove, who was just 20 at the time of her death. Of course, Mockabee was initially identified as a man by police and the Medical Examiner’s Office, reminding trans people everywhere that no matter what we do, there are still people in power who won’t recognize us for who we are and will insist on misgendering us even in death.
Looking at this list will show you that the vast majority of these victims have been trans women of color, and most of them have been Black. This is what happens every year: mostly Black trans women of color are murdered and despite the progress in awareness, protections from laws and visibility, this cycle of violence just continues. As long as women, Black Americans, those who live in poverty, sex workers and trans women are devalued to the point of inhumanity in America, trans women who live at all of these intersections, or even just one or two, will be murdered. Again, these are just the trans people who we know have been murdered this year. Because of the intersections they live at, it’s likely that many have not been reported.

We’re inching closer and closer to breaking the record of reported murders of trans people that was set last year. Every time it seems like we’re finally falling behind last year’s pace, another trans person is murdered and we’re right back in this awful situation again. Rest in peace and rest in power, Skye.

How can the LGBTQ community implement a plan for safety? I am not of this community, however,I try to understand what those within the community feel. May I offer a simple scientific fact? Too often transgirls tired of feeling lonely and rejected start to devalue themselves and become willing to date sexual predators and abusers because those type of people seek out women with low self esteem.

Such a tragic loss
There is no excuse for this kind of dehumanizing behavior to even be taking place. This tragedy is the work of the conservative Christians and their intolerant sermonizing condemning transgender people. The conservative spiritual leaders instilled fear of transgender peoplein the minds of their followers and this is the result.
Transphobia in society cannot be distilled into something so neatly laid in blame at the feet of conservative Christians. This tragedy is the result of bigotry from all levels of society, even from within the LGB community itself. Everyone cannot wash their hands of it, absolving their responsibilities, and proclaim the problem is religious intolerance. That is just as insulting to the dead.
Take a good look back in time at the history of the spread and rise of the power of the church and its eventual mutation into the many sects of Christianity. Take into account the spread of misinformation and redefinition of ideas and teachings for the sake of the consolidation of power in the hands of the clergy. Churches have burned teachers, herbalists and midwives as witches so that they could seize control of the healing arts and prevent the spread of education. (much like republicans and their desire to defund public education today)
Once in history Christian religions accepted same sex relationships and performed marriages for those wishing to do so. With the rise of the need to provide heirs for expanding national governments, church leaders began to claim that same sex relationships were “an abomination”. They even went so far as to reinterpret scripture so as to support the idea that the only relationships that were acceptable were those in which children would be born. After all, they needed to know that there would be a descendant in line to hand the power and lands to in the event of a death in the family.
What? Are you only looking at today and the actions of contemporary churches? No no. What we are dealing with is an infestation of ecclesiastical weeds that have been spread throughout the whole of the Christian faith from the very earliest of times.
Now, with the rise of modern medical research findings, we now know that gay and transgender people are born as they are. As such, there is no means by which either gay or transgender people can possibly change who they are attracted to any more than any other cisgender heterosexual person can be come gay or transgender.
W are being murdered for the way we were born, because the church leaders have taught people to be hate filled and intolerant toward anyone who fails to play along with the inheritance power plays of the past.
And you’re obsessing over Christian bigotry and letting everyone else off the hook because… ? It fits your narrative? You can’t just pick and choose which groups and their hate are the problem when it’s a much wider issue than that.
The driving force of the bigotry in this nation at this time stems from the actions of the various Christian churches and their leaders. I am only pointing out that the problems faced by the transgender community today had its foundations in the bigoted teachings of the past. All the cisgender heterosexual community needs to do, is to realize that they were taken to the cleaners for their money by a bunch of greedy men in robes and stop following the lies they were told for the sake of money.

Every one of the government officials who are creating these bigoted laws consider themselves to be both evangelicals/conservatives and Christians. I consider any conservatives and evangelicals to be Christians in claim only. I have yet to see anyone not a conservative or an evangelical actively deny transgender people their civil rights in this country. None of them are real Christians. If they were, then they would not be using intentional misinformation as a tool to gain social superiority.

This is tragic. I hate that useless celebrity drama has taken over our media but murders of LGBTQ people isn’t talked about much. The way it is now , the US overall isn’t a safe country tbh. The amount of violence this year is disturbing
The dehumanizing of transgender people by conservatives, evangelicals and wannabe spiritual leaders has got to stop. I fail to see how morality has anything at all to do with the condition of ones birth. Transgender people are born transgender. There has never been any choice as to whether or not a transgender person is really who they claim they are. Even Jesus recognized the lack of choice to be a given fact in his remarks in the book of Matthew to his disciples during a discussion on the topic of marriage.
In Jesus’ time the term transgender did not yet exist. The much less accurate term eunuch was the most frequently used term when referring to a transgender person. From my perspective, it would seem that denying the life condition of anyone that has been recognized as having been ‘born that way’ by such an important figure as the Messiah himself would run dangerously close to denying a biblical truth.

Hi, Do we know more about this case? Was she killed because she was trans? I ask because the article was very vague. If a white guy robs someone and the person he robbed kills him, he was not killed bc he was a white male but because of the robbery. Not saying this is the case here just would like to have some clarification if this is a trans person who was murdered or a person murdered because they are trans.
If you look at the data, it’s quite clear that the vast majority of Trans women of color are killed within their own communities–they are not being killed by evangelists (unless those evangelists are on the DL), or by white, middle-class conservative men. You will also find that the vast majority of these women are sex workers who are killed by johns or pimps. You will also find that the vast majority of these women are killed by their boyfriends or significant others–or by family members (most often, also people of color). If you look at the international statistics, the highest incidents of these murders have taken place in Brazil and Mexico.
