Sarah’s Team Pick: The Ladies Guide to the Apocalypse

The Ladies Guide to the Apocalypse (awesome title, right?) is a wonderful blog written by Summer Burkes, who just recently had to move away from New Orleans in the wake of the oil spill. Her firsthand narrative of the spill in the Gulf has taken over the site of late, which is fine, because it feels like some of the most honest writing I’ve read on the topic. She’ll make you feel smarter, if a bit enraged, plus she’s really funny.

Maybe you saw this particular passage of Burkes’ on the Autostraddle tumblr:

Everyone I know is a rock star. I live in the whole world, not just one place. But since I don’t have a family or job to ground me in the Gulf, I’ll go where there’s security, comfort, human contact, love, hope, and beautiful landscapes in which to walk and think and write. If we are indeed living in our last days, I’d rather fly the coop like an oil-soaked bird to clean off in the Pacific Ocean or the high Nevada desert, and spend the last days over there with those guys. Or if these are NOT the last days, and a new consciousness is coming, there’s a good chance the Bay Area will be at the center of one of the (good) explosions. If I go down in an earthquake, so be it. At least I’d know the Earth took me out — and not other people blinded by greed and ego, drunk on the power they have to manipulate other human beings and discard them at will.
