The Babysitters Club — in the ‘80s and ‘90s, there was no other series like it. Reading as a third- and fourth-grader, those books promised an independent and glorious teenage future, full of hard work, close friendship, and biking to one another’s houses, with nary a cell phone in sight. The Babysitters lived in Connecticut, but to me, they might as well have lived in paradise. I tore through those books with the fervor of a kid who couldn’t wait for freedom, and I always wondered about the author, Ann M. Martin, who, as the bio said, “lives in upstate New York with her dogs and cats.” Turns out she’s GAYYYY! Because of course she is. So: which iconic Babysitters Club book are you?
I don’t know about an animal lover, but I am definitely a Mary Anne!
Same!
‘the truth about stacey’ not that i doubt the quiz algorithm BUT i am a kristy to the core! and definitely not cosmopolitan or fashion-forward. stacey would be horrified at the number of cargo shorts in my wardrobe
i accept this self-identification!!
Mary Anne and The Search for Tigger!
I named my car Mary Anne Spier because I am definitely a Mary Anne, so that checks out!
OMG CASEY
Mallory and the trouble with twins… well I am the oldest kid in my family lol
Claudia and the new girl!
This is so spot on and inspiring, I should make a Babysitters mood board that I then turn into papier mache earrings 😆
snaelle that is absolutely perfect for you
I am Kirsty’s Great Idea which resonates deeply with me and also I’m excited to see the NEATE Saves The Day book mentioned again in a quiz!!!!!
Another Mary Anne checking in, and yes I am constantly searching for cats, where even do they go
love all the Mary Anne representation on AS!
Next quiz: which horrifying animorphs transformation are you?
ANIMORPHS omg
YES YES please do this one! OMG I was obsessed with Animorphs when I was a tween lol.
I know I’m way too late to be responding to this, but the author of the Animorphs books is also the very supportive mom of a trans daughter AND there’s definitely potential to see those books as an allegory for transition… I’d love to see an Animorphs Autostraddle quiz!
I got Claudia and the New Girl!
I’m a genXer who missed The Babysitter’s Club phenom but the description is spot on.
“You’re artistic, and you sometimes feel misunderstood by your family and friends. You make your own jewelry, alter your own clothes, and yearn for a future in the art world! Self-expression is at the very core of everything you do.”
This was so cute and the 90s references were spot-on! I got Claudia and the New Girl, which sounds about right as an artsy kid who had subliminal crushes on cool girls I’d just met.
Also, RIP Borders Books & Music, I miss ye still!
