Quiz: Which 90s R&B Album Are You?

I was born in 1992, so people older than me might scoff, but I grew up on music from the 90s and listen to it regularly. I may not have known the meaning and nuance behind certain songs when I was, let’s say, 5, but I understood the general feeling a great R&B song gives you. I was 8 in my mom’s car singing my heart out to Toni Braxton, Patti LaBelle, and Maxwell.

It’s common in Black households to put this music on when we are cleaning, but I find myself turning to 90s R&B when I’m really in my feelings. Like deep in my feelings. Whether it’s because of a woman or some other emotional crisis, there are so many classic albums from this era that have me covered.

Before you take this quiz, I have to say, I obviously could not list every single album released in the 90s. So I settled for a handful of pretty big deal ones. I’ll let you see the rest in the results because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I had so much fun revisiting these albums and making this quiz, and I want you to have fun taking this!

Also, I have to give credit to our Senior Editor Heather Hogan who gave me the idea for this quiz as she is a darling angel!

  1. I am The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which is perfect because I eventually became a teacher and I always loved the parts with the teacher talking to the kids on this album.

  2. Love Deluxe by Sade. You’re smoother than smooth, cooler than cool, ethereal even. Your beauty captivates everyone around you, your smile, your effortlessness. You attract this kind of energy as well.

That about sums me up. Lol.

  3. I met her in Philly and her name was Brown Sugar.
Absolutely fitting, my roommate and I used to go to sleep to this every night. And oddly enough he kind of looked like D’Angelo

  4. I got The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

But I’m commenting because this just gave me the biggest “Oh, I’m old” moment. I saw the image on the main page and though “Wait, didn’t I’m Your Baby Tonight” come out in ’89?” And I’m wrong, it was 1990. And that means I’ve been telling people (for years!) that buying that cassette was part of a funny childhood story that it can’t actually be part of if it’s a year later. This is going to distract me for the rest of the week now. What other parts of that story have I been getting wrong for 30 years?
