But I’m a Cheerleader is the queer film that just never stops giving! This week, it’s the bubblegum retro-pop inspiration for MUNA‘s new music video for “Silk Chiffon,” which features Phoebe Bridgers and was directed by Ally Pankiw, who you know best as the director of the first season of Mae Martin‘s Feel Good. It goes like this: lead singer Katie Gavin shows up at Jesus Camp — where Bridgers is a camp counselor in an all-pink pink Gucci suit — and gets her Christian on with lots of cishet activities, before falling for another queer and escaping to a gay bar where MUNA performs their song to the delight of a dozen gay couples.
MUNA guitarist Naomi McPherson says “Silk Chiffon” is a song gay kids can have their first kiss to, which makes this music video even better!
THIS IS AMAZING and I wonder if it would make any sense if you haven’t seen But I’m a Cheerleader?? (there is no one in my life who has not seen this film, so I have no test audience to survey!)
I will test this out on some friends who have NOT seen But I’m a Cheerleader and get back to you all !
This is so CUTE and the song is so LUSH and I’m so genuinely happy for Gen Z that they get to grow up with music and media that’s so casually and abundantly queer. I can’t even bring myself to be salty about having had to make do with t.A.T.u and “All the Things She Said”.
