Sending you love this Wednesday, alongside this Pop Culture Fix.
+ Hayley Kiyoko has dropped “Greenlight,” her first single since her Panorama album. She says it’s “about making an active decision to put your energy into the things that are working,” which is obviously very good advice. My therapist would approve! You can listen to it right here!
+ Inside the fight to degender awards shows.
+ The 100 hardest video game levels of all time.
+ Wanda Sykes on her Netflix special, Dave Chappell, and being a “woke comic.”
+ Trace Lysette wishes she had something more hopeful to say.
+ GLAAD’s recap of the Black Queer Advancement Festival.
+ The trailer for The Color Purple is here and queer.
+ R.I.P. to the Arrowverse, the most ambitious experiment in the history of superhero TV.
+ Both Cynthia Nixon and Wanda Sykes spoke outside 30 Rock at the Writer’s Strike this week.
+ Wheel of Time’s got a release date and some new promo photos.
God Hayley Kiyoko always finds a new way to glow up, but most of all thanks for reminding me of Legends of Tomorrow, the one show that I’ve ever seen that really shows the true fun of comics and superhero stories.
I just wanna know if this Color Purple will let them be queer. I know this is based on the musical, that does have an explicitly queer storyline. Nonetheless that could still get caught. I just wanna know if I should be excited to see Too Beautiful For Words on screen, that’s all
Wheel of Time has a season two coming! I gotta catch up on my TV, we (partner and i) haven’t even caught season one yet!
Very slow pace in the begining and the teens can be quite annoying but it gets better every episode and it pays off in the end.
Also, that one scene everyone talked about is really worth it!
I’m a huge fan of the novels, and I thought the front end of the show was very well done and the last two or three episodes really suffered from a combination of Amazon interference (the show runner wanted 2 more episodes or a 2 hour premiere ep to fill it out to 10 hours, but Bezos had to battle with Elon Musk in mechas along the Pacific coast with that money. So we got 8.) and COVID-19 shutdowns. One of the Core 5 doesn’t come back in the last two episodes because he didn’t come back after quarantine for reasons no one has quite explained, and you can tell where the CGI gets shoddy because that whole industry was shut down for a while as well.
But you should def. give it a whirl. I love all the new S2 actors. The casting directors GOT IT RIGHT.
It’s a very uneven season…but I watched with friends and had a blast, even if it veered between being genuinely into it and hate watching it many times.
