Hayley Kiyoko’s new music video “Curious” from her upcoming debut album Expectations set the queer internet on fire when it dropped yesterday. After seeing her in concert and watching her other incredible videos, I already had some idea she was capable of this, but “Curious” cements it. The song has Hayley singing to a girl she’s been hooking up with who’s also still with a boy. It also features a heavy beat that pumps below the melody and a catchy “toucha, toucha, toucha” hook that combine to make the song really stand out.
In the video we see Hayley lying on the floor in a pile of women rubbing their hands all over her, dancing in sweats and a loose Hawaiian shirt ala Leo Dicaprio as Romeo, and finally making out with a beautiful girl on a bathroom counter. Every scene is hot in a different queer way. It’s like Kiyoko is using every muscle in body and move in her repertoire to drag queerness to the front of her entire music career. It’s a beautiful thing to see and so is this video.
Mey, you introduced me to Hayley Kiyoko about a year ago when the “Sleepover” vid came out, and I must say my life has been dramatically better since that day because this GODDESS Hayley Kiokyo is everything I’ve needed in my life since I was 13. My little Disney channel loving heart feels so validated every time she opens her mouth. Thank you for your service Mey, you are truly spreading goodness in the world.
What a great time to be alive. And what a great time to be a queer teen, queer icons front and center to make you feel seen, to let you know queerness can be sexy, loud and confident instead of a dirty little secret. Like, I came out three years ago and even then there wasn’t this much queer content to consume. Most content with queer women was directed by men, catered for men. I had Tegan and Sara, and that tATu video from when I was 2 years old. Now I have Sateen, Keko, Hayley Kiyoko, Beatrice Eli, St. Vincent, Zolita, Tish Hyman, PVRIS, Angel Haze, Hurray for The Riff Raff- the list goes on and on. I can finally feel lyrics as they’re written, instead of hearing them but having to switch out every pronoun or pretend I’m singing to a woman, instead of hearing a man sing to me. It’s fine, I can listen to a straight male lead singer and connect to his love for women, but when I listen to songs like Curious I can personally connect to these lyrics, which specifically describe the queer experience of, say, being a girl’s side piece when she’s dating a guy and doesn’t want to come out of the closet. The only time I’ve felt this with a male singer is with Black Kids’ I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You, which says “You are the girl that I’ve been dreaming of ever since I was a little girl”, and in the rest of the lyrics, is surprisingly insightful to lesbian experiences, even if it wasn’t written by or sung by a queer woman. Anyway, I digress. Hayley Kiyoko is Queen of The Gays and she’s all I’ve ever wanted in pop music.
‘I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You’ was apparently written by the singer’s sister, who is gay!
She’s so great ?
*bows to our queer queen*
My friend had the best reaction quote to this. “Her life is a lesbian dream. Next video she’s going to be eating a girl out and singing.”
Oh my.
She truly is Lesbian Jesus.
Praise Shesus and let Her Light shine down upon us evermore, amen.
God, I love Hayley Kiyoko and everything she’s doing.
I see that in comments for her music video some people still repeat that she’s bisexual, so in case someone missed it Hayley confirmed that she’s gay back in August and in recent article she repeated it again, and she also mentioned why her early music videos had male love interests (something some people assumed that had to be a “proof” she must be bi): https://www.buzzfeed.com/katieheaney/hayley-kiyokos-great-gay-pop-music-takeover
BTW, I noticed it’s another article in a row here where words “gay” or “lesbian” in reference to Hayley are missing and instead a general “queer” is used. I know that technically queer is meant to be umbrella term encompassing all non-straight people, but what’s the point of this when we know that Hayley is specifically a lesbian? Especially when from what I’ve noticed, bisexual celebrities are always referred as bisexual, no doubt in large part for the sake of emphasizing bi-visibility? Lesbian visibility is not important, even though there are almost no out lesbian singers who aren’t in some total niche?
Your state of constant vigilance must be exhausting
