Nominees were announced today for the 28th Annual GLAAD Awards, which “recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community and the issues that affect their lives.” Previously, Autostraddle has been nominated three times in the “Outstanding Blog” category, and in 2015 won said award.
There are some categories that reveal how far we’ve got left to go — like that there were so few wide release films with LGBTQ-inclusive storylines this year that the category only has two nominees, and that only one of the limited release nominees was a story about women.
There are also some categories that reveal how the world is sometimes not terrible, like the category in which I was nominated for spending two months watching trans-inclusive television episodes until my eyes bled!!!
Other nominations relevant to your interests include:
- One Mississippi, Survivor’s Remorse, Transparent, Steven Universe and Take My Wife amongst ten nominees for “Outstanding Comedy Series”
- Shows with queer female characters dominated the Outstanding Drama category, with nominations for shows including Orphan Black, The Fosters, Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away With Murder, The OA, Shameless, Wynonna Earp and Supergirl
- Outstanding Individual Episodes include the legendary “San Junipero” episode of black Mirror, as well as Drunk History’s “Bar Fights”
- Outstanding Documentary includes The Same Difference, Southwest of Salem and The Trans List
- Outstanding Reality Program includes Gaycation with Ellen Page as well as I Am Cait, I Am Jazz, The Prancing Elites Project and Strut
- Against Me!, Brandy Clark, Lady Gaga, Sia and Tegan & Sara are all up for music-related prizes
- Outstanding Comic Book includes DC Comics Bombshells, the Love is Love anthology, our very own Lumberjanes and Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat!
- Her Story was also singled out for a Special Recognition. I’m not sure what that is, but it sounds neat!
You can see the full list of nominees on GLAAD’s website. You can also watch this video!!
The winners will be announced at one of two ceremonies: April 1st in Los Angeles and May 7th in New York.
Congratulations Riese – absolutely well-deserved!
I’m not adding so many of these films/shows/news segments/articles/blogs/magazines to my to watch/read list!
Congrats!!!
Damn Riese! That’s rad!
Congratulations Reise and Autostraddle!
And I had no idea that were so many queer friendly Spanish language t.v. journalism / newsmagazines.
Riessssssse! Congrats!
Congratulations Riese! you deserve all of the awards
Congratulations Riese!!!
And San Junipero, yes <3
YAYAYAYAYAYYY
Congrats, just one question, which awards are being announced on which day?
I don’t know!
I checked out the run down of nominees earlier today and I was super excited to see Wynonna Earp and San Junipero get nominated.
That’s stiff competition in the drama series category but it seems a little “everybody gets a trophy”esque. It’s great that their are so many potential nominees but I’m sure some are more deserving than the other.
And then I think for daytime drama they only have Bold and the Beautiful (gee I wonder who will win that award).
This is what kind of irks me about the GLAAD awards, I understand that their may not be enough “content” to be more like the mainstream award shows but maybe if the categories were a little more mainstream it will attract mainstream people to be more inclusive. I know it’s a bit catch-22 and we still have a long way to go but it’s a start.
Granted you have an awards show like the People’s Choice that has a so many categories and then the SAG Awards that just give awards to the actors no matter lead or supporting (in TV anyway which I never understood). But if the GLAAD awards can find a happy medium I think mainstream will take notice.
Also the 2 ceremonies is annoying, make 1 big ceremony and then it could be televised.
Kick ass Riese! Congratulations!
YOU ARE THE WIND BENEATH MY WINGS.
Wow congrats :)
Wonderful. Well-deserved, Riese.
(And congrats to the zero other independent queer media nominees in the category!)
Congratulations on the GLAAD nomination, Riese. Admittedly, my first thought when seeing the nomination was to list off some other Autostraddle pieces that warranted recognition…but that just speaks to the quality of AS last year.
I was surprised/disappointed to see The Bold and the Beautiful get recognition in the daytime drama category, while General Hospital did not. To be sure, both soaps dropped the ball on their LGBT stories this year and I’d rather see both show reprimanded by GLAAD than recognized, but if you’re going to acknowledge Bold, why not acknowledge GH too? I imagine if you compared screentime, Kristina’s coming out got more time than Maya.
Well Done!!! Congrats ++++++
