It’s all really happening: we’re gearing up for A-Camp 2016 in every possible way. Planning camp activities! Putting together programming with our amazing talent! Lab-testing some innovative salad bar strategies!
If you’re not getting ready for A-Camp 2016 (which is happening May 29th to June 3rd, 2016), it might be because you think you’re not going. But the good people at Lunapads have come through because they have donated a full campership and you could win it!
Lunapads is a rad company focused on providing a huge diversity of products for people who menstruate to make that experience comfortable, safe and convenient. From pads and insertable cups, lined underwear in a range of styles (boxer briefs coming soon!), laundry products and even nursing items, they’ve got you covered. And just like A-Camp, Lunapads is committed to welcoming a diverse range of genders — their product range and messaging reflects the fact that people of many genders menstruate, not just women, and that the many women whose bodies don’t menstruate aren’t any less authentically women than those who do. Much like Autostraddle and A-Camp, their staff and customer base are “cisgender, transgender, nonbinary, and genderqueer individuals who span the gender spectrum,” and they want to honor all those experiences. As far as why this matters to Lunapads, staff member Lisa says:
Because most conversations about periods focus on cisgender girls & women — that is, people whose gender (girl, woman) aligns with the sex (female) they were assigned at birth — it can be easy to forget that some transgender men, genderqueers, and nonbinary people have periods too. While visibility around this issue is complicated, framing menstruation as an experience or function exclusive to women is a frustrating microaggression that trans & nonbinary people regularly face – it reinforces biological essentialism and perpetuates cissexist assumptions that harm and marginalize. We can do better.
Another important truth to acknowledge about periods is that some women don’t have them. This might be due to menopause, stress, disease, or a hysterectomy. Some women may have never started menstruating due to a variety of medical conditions, or they may be transgender or intersex. None of these make a woman any less a woman than one who menstruates.
Sound like the kind of company you’d like to support? Well, they’d like to support you too — support you with a campership and some cool stuff!

Good luck and happy campershipping!
Yay, Lunapads! Stoked this great organization donated a campership! Good luck to everyone entering!
well like, flights aren’t covered. just the shuttle that takes you to camp from the airport and from camp to the airport. so that’s the point of the note. get to LAX on your own and they’ve got the shuttle covered.
I’m really struggling not to enter. I’m lucky enough to have a job and been able to save up all year to go to camp. And I have a place! But telling people how much camp means to me is MY FAVOURITE THING.
I’m not kidding, in an interview last month I wrote a mini essay about A-Camp for the literacy test when asked to write about ‘My Favourite Place’. Ask me the question ‘Why do you want to go to A-Camp?’ and I just want to answer so badly!
(*breaks into a fit of sobbing because I am only a temp and don’t get vacation days* Somebody else, have a really great time for me, okay?)
Thanks for bringing this to our attention! I adjusted the language to avoid confusion. Hopefully it’s more clear now :)
I think they mean the actually getting to the airport via plane, car, bus, or (probably) really long walk. And then Lunapads will shuttle you from the airport to the camp and then back to the airport.
Ahh! I wanted to write what attending camp would mean to me, but I’m on mobile and somehow I hit enter before I finished typing. Does anyone know if there is a way to edit? I just submitted a sentence fragment… :/
McKay, I emailed you!
The same thing happened to me! Do you mind sharing how to edit it? Thank you and good luck!
I can’t go to Camp this year, but I’m thrilled to see a Lunapads/Autostraddle collaboration. I can’t recommend Lunapads highly enough. Much more comfortable AND absorbent than disposable pads! And I love the cute designs.
Is there a way to edit the submission for why you want to go to a-camp? I accidentally sent it before I was finished.
messaged you!
Thank you!
