Greetings. This is Brittani’s Video Party, where I bring some of the “best” videos from all over my internet together so we can clap, cry or deconstruct. Have you ever gotten to a video and it already has 33 million views and you wonder where the heck have you been? Well I’m here to help you so that you see it when it only has 32 million views. Aim low, world. Aim low.

About a year ago, GoldieBlox successfully kickstarted an interactive book series and constructions set about a young girl who loves to build. The company’s goal is to show the world that girls deserve more choices than dolls and princesses. OK Go contraption collaborator Brett Doar helped create this ad that’s been making the rounds.

Before Deborah Cohan went into surgery to have her breasts removed, she recruited everyone in the OR to join her in dancing to Beyonce’s “Get Me Bodied.” Cohan, an Ob/Gyn from San Francisco, requested that friends and family make videos of themselves dancing so she can watch them while she recovers.
M.I.A.’s video for Y.A.L.A. comes with an epilepsy warning because the flashing lights and negative imaging gets pretty intense. The song from her new album Matangi was made in collaboration with British magazine i-D and fashion house Kenzo. By the way, Y.A.L.A. stands for you always live again. Shots fired, Drake.
In this first episode of Single_Never_Married we meet Deon, a dating expert that sucks at dating. The show shares a writer with the book it’s based on, “How to Get Real About Dating.” The remaining eight episodes will tackle love, dating, the difficulties around finding a good match, and how we all really want to be accepted and loved for who we are.
If you have a video you think everyone should see, tweet it to @bishilarious for consideration. And of course feel free to post your favorite videos from the week below.
“We started at the bottom but Drake gets all the credit” -M.I.A. “Matangi”
Love. Her.
omg, that GoldieBlox video is everything i would’ve wanted in my world as a child i can’t even
“Good job on the boobs.” is a genuine compliment in my world.
GoldieBlox seem pretty cool – I just wish we were past designing toys for boys and toys for girls. I wish all toys were gender neutral. Why do we need to label a building toy for boys OR for girls?
But, by the look of my graduating class of mechanical engineers (98% male), we need to try anything and everything we can to make sure more women get into engineering. And if GoldieBlox means that in 20 years I will have an equal ratio of women to men in my office, then I will owe them a big thank you.
“Goldie’s toolkit is inspired by common household objects and craft items — things girls are already familiar with. Plus, the set features soft textures, curved edges and attractive colors which are all innately appealing to girls.”
I don’t want a toy made by someone who says shit like ‘soft textures, curved edges and attractive colors are all innately appealing to girls’. And who spent her marketing research time investigating the gender differences between boys and girls.
If we want to hold someone up as a feminist hero in the world of kids’ toys, it shouldn’t be this lady and her block version of the feminised lego ‘friends’ play-sets. We deserve so much fucking better.
When I showed my 10 and 12 year old brothers the GoldieBlox video and they made me replay it for half an hour because they think it is wickedly cool, I cried a little bit.
