Our clothing says a lot about us. It’s the first glimpse into our personality that we present to the world. We use it to advertise brands, thoughts, ideas, and designs. It’s also one of the easiest ways to signal that we’re open for conversation. A subtle rainbow pin might indicate that yes, the cute girl from Organic Chemistry is more than welcome to take the seat across from you at the coffee shop. A college sweatshirt is a beacon for alumnae everywhere. And a jersey on game day means you’re ready to celebrate and/or commiserate with total strangers on the performance of your team. If you’re new in town or struggling to make connections on campus, try heading out for some sports based camaraderie.

Which sport? There’s only one real answer, ladies, and it’s here: football season, the most WONDERFUL time of the year. There’s still time to fill up the bars wearing team colors, toast our victories (or drown our sorrows), and surreptitiously check stats during those long meetings at work.

Now, to start out, understand that a team jersey is never quite going to be appropriate casual wear to meet up for drinks or meet the parents. But it IS possible to dress it up for a more mature look when you hit up the bar to watch the big game, whether it’s the NFL, NCAA, or CFB.

What makes your lucky jersey more versatile? Stick with the athletic vibe, but focus on the cut and material of your pieces. You want to make sure your silhouette stays balanced: a baggy top needs slimmer bottoms, and a longer jersey needs pants that don’t break above or below your shoe line, to avoid throwing off your proportions. For smaller shoulders, check out youth large and extra-large sizing, so you won’t be swimming in an adult male cut. Think about your jersey — or cap, t-shirt, even team socks! — as the focal piece in a monochrome ensemble. Use shades and gradients of color to assemble an outfit that’s clean and casual. Steer clear of rough cotton or terry cloth when choosing sweatpants, and try a Dri-Fit finish to avoid looking like you came straight from practice.

For a final touch, you can add a pop of complementary color. Sneakers and hats work well for this, just make sure you don’t overdo it on the neon or primary colors.
