Autostraddle’s Ultimate Holigay Gift Guide 2015: What We Really, Really Want This Year

2015 Autostraddle Holigays

It’s such a special time of year: a time of gifting and receiving, making lists and checking them twice, and also practicing how to curl ribbon over and over again in the middle of the night. In the spirit of the season, Team Autostraddle has come together to tell you all about the stuff we really, really want this year, mostly because we’re operating under the assumption that included in our own ramblings will be stuff your loved ones and favorite barista would probably like this year and also some stuff you forgot to put on your own wish list. (This is actually guaranteed if you or someone you love wants a FitBit, takes photos with an actual camera, or reads books.)

This Elliptical

So we’re moving to the country and there won’t be any gyms nearby, plus we’ll probably be snowed in for most of the next two months. That means it’s finally time for me to take the plunge and create what every gym rat dreams of: A HOME GYM. Unfortunately, this shit is expensive. Maybe I should try craigslist.

MAC Strobe Cream

Do you read Hard Lacquer? I do. I read Hard Lacquer and I want to do everything Aja tells me to do so I can put my best face forward while hanging out alone in my room.

Duck Boots

This is for when I’m snowed in but still need to see if my check came in the mail! I MEAN FOR WHEN I’M SHOVELING THE DRIVEWAY AND ENJOYING THE OUTDOORS.

The Mare: A Novel

Mary Gaitskill is my favorite author and this is her new book, obviously I need it.

Splendid Jogger Pants

These go with the book.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: The Illustrated Edition

I put off reading the Harry Potter series for a million years because I thought it was silly kid’s stuff. BOY WAS I WRONG. So now I’m reading it and I’m currently stuck on Goblet of Fire because I’m so sad about [SPOILER] that I can’t bring myself to keep reading! So anyway, as a newly minted Harry Potter book fan, I really, really want this illustrated edition of the first book because a) it’s so pretty!! and b) that’s really it, it’s just SO. PRETTY.

Cuisinart Chef’s Classic Stainless 7-Piece Cookware Set

Look, I’m an adult person living in a small house with several other people — at least three — and they often need me to cook food for them, which I’m happy to do. From now on I’d like to do that cooking in some nice, uncoated, stainless steel pots. I deserve this life! Oh and while we’re at it—

The Southerner’s Cookbook

There’s a whole section on gravy. Just all the kinds of gravy! I need this cookbook.

Goldenrod Just Dandy Skirt

Y’all it has pockets! I don’t need to tell you how important a pocket is, much less TWO of them! This skirt will look so perfect paired with a weird band t-shirt and some cute boots. I am ready for this skirt.

Bamboo Laptop Stand

I have his multi-step plan for creating a Real Office for myself, and I’ve already secured a cushy rolly chair and a wee tiny desk. I even have a gorgeous little aloe plant named Bethesda who keeps me company! Next up is this laptop stand, a wireless keyboard, and a trackpad. Whee!

Burr Coffee Grinder

I feel like I’ve asked for this for Christmas for a thousand years since the beginning of time. It’s juuuust past the ratio of price vs. necessity that I feel like I can buy it for myself, yet I’ve also totally convinced myself that it’s the last barrier to my coffee being totally amazing all the time. Is that a silly fantasy? The only way to find out is if I finally get this burr grinder.

The Colette Sewing Handbook

After reading Jasika’s amazing article on making your own clothes, I was like YEAH, I CAN DO THAT. Except I can really only do it like spiritually or emotionally at this point, because I don’t know very much about sewing. But after I read this book I bet I’m gonna know a lot more!

Infrared Food Thermometer

Alton Brown uses one of these all the time on Good Eats and I’m always jealous but also assumed that it was way expensive. Reader, it is not! It is pretty affordable and an easy way to measure the temperature of stuff that needs to be in a specific degree range, like candy or yogurt (although if you cook meat you’ll probably still need a traditional meat thermometer, sorry). According to the reviews, a surprising number of people get a lot of satisfaction just pointing it at parts of their house and finding out how cold their windowsill is, so there’s that too.

All of the Sheet Masks

I’m pretty into sheet masks (well, all face masks) lately, and they’re gonna be extra important once winter is in full swing and my skin gets super dry. I’m really lusting after these Pinkgo Girl masks, one for hydrating and one for brightening (that second one looks like LACE it’s bananas). Also though I’d take somebody buying me these creepy-looking “blank” sheet masks so I can just soak them in whatever product I want and thereby become the radiant ageless goddess I was meant to be.

Anything From Laura Wooley’s Etsy Shop

Laura made me some lip balm at camp that changed my life and now I want all of the apothecary supplies she makes to be on my nightstand so I can feel awesome forever.

Harry Potter Coloring Book

Duh.

A Sleeping Bag for Grown-Ups

I’m very excited to get back into camping in my adult life, and plan to do it a lot when spring and summer roles around (and once I figure out how to get to New York’s state parks from public transportation). A good sleeping bag is a good start.

Kindle Fire

My girlfriend gave me her Kindle PaperWhite and I am so thankful for it and I love it. I would never spend money on a thing like this for myself, but if I had one I could read my comics on it too.

Cool Cat Toys

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but I’m basically running a cat rescue organization out of my apartment.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: If I were being super real about what I want for the holidays, I would say I want a rice cooker and a Smart TV but there are so many kinds out there I don’t know which one I want. Let me know which ones I should want!

Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic Instant Film Camera

Laneia let me play with her Instax when we were at the senior editor retreat and I fell in love. This camera is so much fun! I just wanted to experiment and try different lighting and snap away. But I wanted to respect Laneia’s things so I only took a few pictures like a normal adult. I want one so I can go wild! (That means I also need a giant pack of film to go along with it.) This one is a tad upgrade from the regular Instax and I just really like this body and how retro-y it looks.

Cute Succulent Planters

My girlfriend and I bought a million succulents to spruce up the apartment — ok, it was only six put it feels like a little army of tiny pokey plants. I love them and they’re so cute just sitting there in their plastic black pots. But they could probably unlock an unfathomable amount of adorableness if they were in cute planters. I was planning to make planters out of odd things I found at a thrift store but that trip hasn’t come to fruition. I’d be happy with just one of these little guys.

An Adult Coloring Book

I went to Half-Price Books on a mission to find an adult coloring book because I’m up on all the ~trends~. My choices were limited and I didn’t feel any calming feelings just thinking of coloring oceans, sugar skulls, tattoos or buildings. But I really loved Johanna Basford’s illustrations the most and looked her up online to find out she has an Enchanted Forest coloring book! I can’t color any other blank outlines if it isn’t Johanna’s Enchanted Forest, goddammit.

This Frida Pin

I was so inspired by Lydia’s post on enamel pins that I browsed the ones she recommended and found this awesome Frida pin. I think it would look good on a denim jacket for sure!

Wildfang Chinos

The bottoms/pants in Wildfang’s collection are always on point. I’m still feeling the whole jogger thing (or anything with a drop-crotch) right now, so I’ve had my eyes on these pants for awhile and if someone would just buy them for me I can finally take my eyes elsewhere thank you.

Campfire Soy Candle

Okay so one of my favorite things about camping (which I do a total of once maybe a year) is having my clothes and hair smell like campfire. Campfire is my favorite smell in the whole world and the fact that someone had the idea to make it a candle that I could have in my home means that someone probably has one billion dollars.

Whiskey Notes (and Poster)

I can’t have a gift list without something whiskey-related on it. Okay, first, that goddamn poster combines whiskey and infographics together so beautifully, it’s so perfect. The tasting notebook is 144 pages, which totally beats the one I currently have which is like 20 pages and much smaller in size. This is just really good-looking stuff!

Greyscale Goods Gift Card (or Snapback!)

The the gift of personal styling! I’ve tried Stitch Fix, and it’s not for me and Trunk Club probably wouldn’t work because I don’t fit into mens sizes. Greyscale Goods takes care of that middle/grey (get it?) area that I fall into stylistically. Also, you’re supporting a small queer-owned business! I’ll take a snapback too please.

Paderno Spiralizer

After a long absence from the kitchen, my number one culinary dream is to learn how to make noodles out of vegetables. This requires a thing called a spiralizer and the Paderno version comes recommended.

Healthy Slow Cooker Cookbook

I just moved to Chicago where temperatures reach a level of freezing fucking cold that my Australian body doesn’t quite know how to deal with. My survival plan is to hunker down in my apartment and not emerge until April. For sustenance, I plan to use the Crock Pot we were recently gifted. This recipe book will probably help.

A Camera Case That Isn’t a Mom Bag

My mom and brother teamed up to get me a fancy schmancy camera for my birthday this year, and it came with a really amazing case that holds everything I could possibly ever need for my camera. But sometimes, you don’t need to bring your charger and an extra lens and the USB cords and also manuals for your accessories and camera body with you to the beach. Sometimes, you just wanna throw your camera into your backpack and live your best life without worrying you’re destroying one of the most valuable things you own. A flex case like this one makes that possible, and it fits the body of my DSLR with pretty much any lens attached. HALLELU.

An Herb Garden That Fits Anywhere

I spoiled myself earlier this year by living with someone who had an herb garden outside. I vowed to myself that I would bring the tradition with me when I moved, but I’m struggling to even figure out which grocery store to go to on the regular so it’s become a lot to ask of myself to figure out where to buy the best herbs and gardening supplies. Instead, I’m gonna hope someone buys me everything I need to have a cute, hip, windowsill herb garden instead.

A Tortoise Comb

I’ve been pining over real people combs for years, and I think it’s about time I upgraded and finally got one.

Books About Traveling Written By Women

Since my big adventure, I’ve had two distinct desires: to spend every single day driving 75 MPH toward nothing, and to read about other people doing the same thing. Traveling is such a big, awesome experience, and there’s been so many books written about adventures and exploration and finding yourself on the open road. But unfortunately, pretty much all those books are by dudes. I’ve already read Wild and The Beautifully Worthless and Snowflake/Different Streets and I’m hungry for so much more. This month, I’m begging for My Life on the Road and Anywhere But Here.

Dead Men Don’t Catcall Tote Bag

I put this in last year’s Rebel Girls gift guide because I love tote bags and hate men, but nobody bought it. This year, I am reinvigorated with desire for it because after crossing the wild west there’s a part of you that wishes you were a cowgirl, like forever.

Nike Pro Classic Sports Bra

I started working out seriously for the first time in my adult life back in July and have been using the same sports bra — which I’ve been using since elementary school, and which I’m pretty sure was my mom’s from before she had kids (I am 27) — every single day. It has started to always feel damp, even after I run it through the dryer, which I only do if I’m feeling flush with quarters. I’m hoping a more recent model (maybe two) would let me trash the old one and dry out a little faster.

Running Tights

Though I actually do own one modern pair of pants to run in, I own only that one pair, and sometimes things get pretty gross (see above re: quarters). These have pockets and a gradient and everything.

Eve’s Hollywood

I’ve been really into reading about Los Angeles since moving to Los Angeles. This was Emily Books’s pick for November, and it was described as “Imagine a Joan Didion who likes food and drugs and rock and roll and fun, or a Weetzie Bat a couple of decades early: that’s Eve Babitz.” Sold. (There are also about a hundred other books I want to read and tons I don’t even know about yet but “library card” isn’t a very good item for a gift guide.)

Steven Universe Stuff

I love Cartoon Network’s all-ages super inclusive and diverse cartoon Steven Universe. It has better queer representation than maybe any other show on TV. And it’s a super fun, really beautiful all-ages show with deep, rich characterization. It’s incredible. This Guide to the Crystal Gems book is the perfect source of information for any fan who wants to know more about how the universe of the show works. There are also some really terrific T-Shirts, whether you want to dress as Steven himself, a Cookie Cat fan or the biggest Mr. Universe fan on the planet, Rose Quartz. Finally, you can add a Crystal Gem touch to your home decor with this stylish square throw pillow case.

This 8-in-1 Kitchen Tool

Over the past year I’ve been getting more and more into cooking and baking, and I find that I always have more fun if my tools are fun. And how fun is this! I really like the simple design of it, the bright colors and the way it saves a bunch of space in the kitchen. Plus, it’s super functional. I mean, it’s got a funnel, measuring cup, juice squeezer, spice grater, egg masher, cheese grater, can opener and egg separator. Just imagine all the cool things you could make with this!

A Playstation 4

I’m allowed to ask for one big ticket item, right? When my brother and I lived together, we shared a Playstation 3, and it was great. I could play all the gay rpgs I wanted, everything from Skyrim, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Fallout: New Vegas. I had tons of fun going on quests, exploring the map and deciding which npc I wanted to romance. But when my brother moved to Chicago, they took the Playstation with them (they payed more money for it than I did). I really miss being able to play video games, so now I’d like to get a new one. Plus, in the upcoming Fallout 4 you get an unkillable dog companion that follows you around, so you know I want to play that.

Ready Player One

When one is in graduate school, reading for pleasure time becomes scarce and precious. That’s because we read a book a week — amazing books, too! This semester alone I’ll have read something by Joyce Johnson, Virginia Woolf, James Baldwin… really, no slouch on the book list. And on top of all that, we’re writing our own books. Oh, y’all can bet I’m gonna spend Christmas break reading things I actually choose myself. I’ll be starting with Ready Player One, and then I am only limited by my word devouring speed.

Board Games

Have I mentioned that I play D&D once a week? And I’ve been enjoying boardgame nights with the same group of people whenever our DM can’t play. I’ve also been playing on Boardgame Arena (with some of you queers, even). All of this maintains my sanity during school. Last year, I wasn’t very good about having a hobby outside of writing. This year, I’m doing better. Bolstering my game collection is helping. I actually can’t decide what’s on my list this year, the above mentioned Tokaido or Betrayal (which I had the privilege of playing with some A-Campers and our very own Whitney Pow) or Dominion (how do I still not have Dominion?). Opinions, please! Which should go on my Christmas list?

A Technology-Toting Backpack

For my birthday two years ago, my mother got me a beautiful leather messenger bag. I use it for everything. But in keeping with my efforts to travel lighter around the city I live in, I would like something much lighter and with a better weight distribution for my average day. The leather bag will always be around for when I have to look like the fully-functional adult I am, but to head to the graduate library? Definitely the Herschel backpack in the window of my local independent bookstore that I’ve been eyeing. A Grid-It wouldn’t go amiss for keeping all my technology and accompanying wires organized.

Camera Strap

I found these affordable, custom leather camera straps on Etsy and immediately wanted to upgrade mine that says SMIZE. The shop is called Viveo and they have a whopping 64 options in varying leathers, widths and heft for a perfect match for you and your camera. From dainty and thin for lighter cameras to versions that look like they could have been custom-made at Mr. S, there’s something for all the shutterbugs out there.

Wookie Chic Stuff

It is rare the femme who would turn down a ridiculously chic faux fur, and this one’s awesome tonal variations and longer-than-usual bits of fluff turned me into a heart-eyes emoji instantly. I know I said I wanted a cape, but can’t I just have this or this or this instead?!

Serge Lutens Tubéreuse Criminelle

There is perfume and then there is perfume, and I can tell you that it doesn’t get more decadent than a bell jar full of Serge Lutens. The next best thing is a tall, lovely bottle of one, for half the price and a whole lot easier to come by. My pick is the elegant Tubéreuse Criminelle, with notes of tuberose, jasmine, orange blossom, hyacinth, nutmeg, clove, styrax, musk and vanilla, from the exclusive range. It reminds me of my wedding day!

Bag Charms

To be honest, I didn’t get the fuss of bag charms until receiving one as a gift. It came on a sleek tote with buttery raspberry leather on one side, and a luxe pale pink on the other, with a little puffball of merlot-colored fur that I’ve constantly fondled ever since. The true charm of these little guys is how totally 80s they are — they have that collect ‘em all, trade with your gal pals vibe, and would make excellent stocking stuffers.

A Big Black Box

Confession: I’ve been storing my makeup in the bathroom. In my defense I need the light, I need to use the sink, I need to spread out and settle in and go to town! But I know it’s a big beauty no-no, so a super-organized, roomy train case like this could be the solution to making sure I have what I need at my fingertips without exposing my precious stash to the bright lights, damp humidity and high heat often found in the one room of the house I can count on for the best makeup application.

Topeak Explorer Bike Rack

I know, I know, but I was really inspired by Crystal’s Working On It column and felt sort of obligated to start taking vaguely better care of myself. Among other things, I’ve started biking around the city instead of taking the train, and I hate every second of it but I can also (begrudgingly) acknowledge that it’s good for me. I don’t huff and puff and sweat and wobble when I get home like I used to, and slightly inclined hills no longer seem impossible. Anyway, I need this bike rack because I want to use my bike for things like grocery shopping and beach trips in the summer. In my fantasies I could strap a box of wine to the back and pedal off towards adventure.

Doge Necklace

Find me an occasion that calls for fancy jewelry and I will find you ten reasons why this doge necklace is 100% appropriate — such glamour, wow. If doge isn’t your style, perhaps I can interest you in this pizza slice best friend necklace.

Black Earth Botanica

I’d feel weird if I didn’t tell you that Black Earth Botanica is run by my best friend, but I feel less weird about shilling for her because I’ve bought a ton of this stuff and it’s all amazing. She grows most of the herbs herself and develops her recipes based on the astrological calendar. Black Earth Botanica makes tinctures, incense and anointing oils that make my office smell like the spiritual realm. I will never have enough.

These Terrifying Cat Panties

If anybody ever sleeps with me ever again, I really want to leave them with a lasting impression.

Denim Dudes

I picked up this tome in a bookstore about a year ago, and I should have bought it then! My denim obsession is a growing creature, and this book combines the beauty of denim with the individuality of personal style. With macro shots of pairs that have been broken in over years, and a wealth of style inspiration, I want to get my hands on this! I need new ways to wear my jeans.

Fancy Schmancy Lipstick

This item is definitely just a fantasy for me since it’s hella expensive. But in a dream world, I’m wearing a slick custom suit and this gorgeous Black Dhalia Tom Ford lipstick to every holiday party. A deep, deep red to look sultry and festive, all winter long!

A Tie Clip ‘Cause I Gotta Keep My Ties In Check

Tie clips are surprisingly uncommon, and this one is sleek and dandy. I’m dreamin’ of being an especially handsome tombabe this round of Holiday soirees, and I think this lil’ clip brings a bit of shine without being gaudy. What better to go with my fancy shmancy lipstick than a slick tie clip?

A Jean Jacket That’ll Go With Everything

After an unfortunate curry incident with my old favourite jean jacket (RIP Topman dream), I’ve been on the market for something to replace it. This lil’ topper from ASOS looks cozy enough to be an outer layer on dry days here on the West Coast and also go with everything in my closet!

12 Days of Gorgeous Set

I love Benefit Comestics so much! This kit is a great way to try a bunch of products I haven’t already and see what full size products I will add to my normal routine. I’m also a huge sucker for advent calendars.

Fitbit Charge HR Wireless Activity Wristband

I don’t really care about fitness, but I want to track my heart rate at all times and see what kind of terrible sleep I am getting!

Wingardium Leviosa Feather Ring

I am always looking for lowkey ways to signal to the world that I am a huge Harry Potter dork, and I think this classy, yet adorable ring is perfect for this.

Boy Meets World: The Complete Series

Boy Meets World is one of my favorite shows of all time and it breaks my heart that it isn’t on any streaming sites and I have no way to watch “And Then There Was Shawn” whenever I want! This box set will solve 30% of my problems in life, is what I am saying.

Margarita Women’s Socks

You may think I’m boring for wanting socks, but may I remind you that Dumbledore also requested socks for Christmas? And these socks are amazing. They’re super cushiony and non-sweaty and they generally make my feet feel like royalty. They’re also $30 and I just can’t bring myself to buy more than one pair at a time. Which makes them the perfect gift!

Macro Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

I feel really interested in cooking and food photography lately. This lens is what Deb from Smitten Kitchen uses, and her photos are always gorgeous! I would love it if I could play around with a macro lens.

The Food Lab: Better Home Cooking Through Science

Related: food science books are just fascinating to me. I have a couple good reference books already, but not this one. It just came out this year and I have been coveting it since I read the review in Wired.

Cheval Mirror

I don’t have a full length mirror in my life anymore. Which is fine 95% of the time, but occasionally, I need to see all of myself at once. I like this mirror because I’ve never had a mirror on a stand before! Only attached to walls or doors. Standalone mirrors feel fancy and old-timey to me, and I have the perfect spot for this in my room.

Star Wars Tattoo Robot Leggings

Annnnd this is one of those reasons that I need a full length mirror. God. I would look so hot in these leggings. Why would I not want R2 and Threepio splashed across my thighs?

Magic Orgasms, Please

I don’t know how I made it this far in life without a Magic Wand, especially considering I have been traveling around the country as a sex educator for the past five years. I think I just haven’t been willing to put the money into it because honestly a $20 pocket rocket knockoff will do the job for me. But it’s time. I’m a grown-ass woman and I deserve a grown-up vibrator. Plus it’s rechargeable so I don’t have to frantically steal batteries from the TV remote anymore.

A True Red Pout

I got a travel size of this lip stain last year and fell in love. It’s a deep, blood red and the color payout is va-va-voom gorgeous. It doesn’t last forever compared to other lip stains, but it also doesn’t get flaky and, most importantly, it doesn’t dry out my lips. I HATE DRY LIPS.

Femme Flannel Flagging

Flannel isn’t really my thing. Even as a legit teen of the 90’s. The feminine detail on these sexy panties is making me change my mind. Cozy sexy cool.

This Movie That Makes Me Weep For My Youth

This is seriously the best movie. I cried over and over. I know it’s a kid’s flick, but if this didn’t move you to tears, you are a monster. I’m sorry. It’s true.

Mallory Ortberg and Literary Snark I Can Hold In My Hand

I usually read books on my Kindle, but this book seems worthy of a hard copy. It would be a fine addition to the stack of weird and hilarious books I keep in the bathroom for guests embarking on a long stay. Is that offensive to Mallory? It’s a compliment, really, I swear. I take the bathroom experience very seriously.

A Fanny Pack

I don’t even care how overwhelmingly hipster-ish this is; I desperately want a fanny pack. Carrying a purse makes my back hurt, and sometimes I wear pants that are just too tight to carry everything I need for whatever I’m doing in my pockets and/or bra. A fanny pack is the clear solution, correct? But my number one concern when looking for a fanny pack was will it look bizzarre with flannel and then I FOUND AN ETSY MODEL WEARING THIS FANNY PACK WHILE ALSO WEARING A FLANNEL SHIRT and it’s perfect. Please someone buy this for me. Please.

The Year of Magical Thinking

It’s absurd that I haven’t read this yet.

This Puzzle of a “Tapestry Cat”

Jigsaw puzzles are the best and I can’t deal with how perfect this cat is. I would like to spend many hours over several consecutive days assembling this cat in my living room.

Yoga Books

I’ve been doing a lot of yoga to work on chronic pain I’ve been experiencing, and it’s made me really interested in anatomy and how the body moves and holds itself. I always get kind of paralyzed when I look up information about bodies and health, because I never know who to trust, BUT I have decided I am going to take the plunge and ask for these books. Yoga Anatomy seems basic and not too woo-y and it comes highly recommended. The Key Muscles of Yoga: Scientific Keys, Volume I seems more connected to a specific person’s practice and it was recommended to me by a teacher I really trust. Together, these books feel like a good place for me to start learning more about my body and how to name how it works and feels.

Leather Sleeve Bomber

This year I have to survive an entire winter for the first time in three years. I wish I could have this beautiful jacket to do so in. The details like mixed texture and gold accents are lovely, and it would match with literally anything.

In Times Of Terror Wage Beauty

This little book is what all inspirational texts should be. Beautiful designed, full of radical wisdom and no fluff. A friend recommended it a few months ago and I’ve wanted to get my hands on it ever sense.

Beyoncé on Vinyl

I’m about to have access to my record player again, and what better way to celebrate than with some new LPs? First on my list is Beyoncé’s 2014 self-titled masterpiece. I’m very ready to vogue around my parents’ house while this baby spins.

A Fancy Ceramic Coffee Dripper

I’m not sure when or why drip coffee became such a hot trend since it’s like, the cheapest, simplest and most portable way to make nice fresh coffee, but since it has there are all these fancy (and lovely) dripper cones around. This handmade ceramic one is totally gorgeous. I won’t be taking it on any camping trips but it would look lovely in my kitchen next to the coffee pot and grinder.

The Moon. Around My Neck.

I pretty much own every set of brass earrings created by the wonderful fair-trade jewellery store Made, so it’s time to move on to necklaces! This long-chained crescent moon is witchy enough to be part of my ‘yes I’m a tarot reader’ get-up, but elegant and dangly enough to go with almost everything else I own.

No more scalded hands or bike mishaps!

Y’know, I genuinely believed I had invented this and have spent many mornings thinking about how this afternoon I’m going to make a prototype from, like, a bent coat hanger and then proceed to become a millionaire with my awesome invention. Well guess what, some hipster got there before me. And I’m glad, because I never did make that prototype and in the meantime have had many unfortunate spillages. No more! I shall have my coffee and ride my bike!

The Wicked + The Divine

I got into reading this amazing comic earlier this year and now I want All Of The Books. It’s about a pantheon of reincarnated gods who are like pop idols to their mortal fans (and basically I fancy all of them) and a teenager named Laura who gets caught up in their It’s filled with clever mythological references that go right over my head, and bad language and wicked deeds and sarcasm and extremely cool outifts and beautiful acts of heroism.

A Cup For Me (And Only Me)

I’m one of those awful people who hates it when people use my mug and will go on the rampage around the whole building if mine vanishes at work. The problem is, my mugs are totally non-descript, but this hand-thrown cup is special enough that my studio-mates should know to leave well alone.

Murdered-Out Eames Chairs

Okay, big-ticket item, but: the Eames Lounger has been on my bucket list of “Things I’ll Own When I Know I’ve Made It” for a long time. Recently, I was stalking a fellow designer’s blog and found an all-black “murdered-out” version and was suddenly overcome by a powerful need. Unfortunately, the Herman Miller site has less-punk versions, but I did find I could make a badass, all-black version of another favorite of mine, their Molded Dowel-leg Chair.

1968: Radical Italian Design: Photographs

Looking around, you may have noticed recently a resurgence in the bright patterns and weirdo shapes of postmodernist Italian design like the Memphis Group (see: Nathalie Du Pasquier’s collection for American Apparel). If you’re a fan, you can now go straight to the source: one of my favorite alt art-photography magazines, Toilet Paper recently put out this insane, saturated rundown of some of the weirder parts of Italian design in the late-60s. It’s both education and a total head trip, making it exactly my favorite type of thing.

Davines OI Aroma Roll-On

Full disclosure: I haven’t actually smelled this yet. But! I have been thinking a lot lately about having a signature scent. After all, it’s one of the most evocative forms of memory retrieval, and I never want to be forgotten. Recently, one of my favorite ladies/writers Rachel Syme seriously endorsed it on twitter, the place where I get all of my best recommendations. So. I can’t wait to smell good, girl.

Collection of the Four Best Clean Air Plants for Your Home

I love plants. Like, obsessively. If you find a photo of a home with beautiful plants in it, I will invariably pin that ish. Recently, I found out that not only are they beautiful and make you feel like more of a real human being with an inviting home, but also, they can improve the air quality in your home! Who knew? Maybe it’s snake oil, but at least it’s also completely lovely. Plus, they’re an excuse to buy a million adorable planters.

Strange Plants

Speaking of my love of plants, Strange Plants is a great little collection of art about plants, made by assorted artists. There are currently two editions and they’re both charming as hell. The best things about these books? They come with a page of stickers for customizing your book jacket, laptop cover, and life!

Hipster Sloth Quote Poster

Sloths are just cool critters, right? Add that to a poster that is basically just weird and silly and you have exactly what I need for my apartment. There is nothing I want more than this simple greeting from a sloth, “welcome home, darling.” I mean, if I had this in my apartment I just don’t even know what would happen. It would be the best day ever. I would never have to find another weird poster again.

Small Leather Card Holder Wallet

You know when you really want to purchase something but you’re not sure. So you keep going back and back to take another look because it is beautiful and you want it, but your mind is like not today, human, not today. That is what it is like with this wallet. I want to try to not carry a purse and this seems like the most logical solution. I want a wallet that is easy on the eyes and also does what it is supposed to do.

Clay Pomade

I have a confession to make, I think I’m getting a little too into my hair. On a scale of 1 to Justin Bieber I am reaching and dipping into the Bieber arena. I am still searching for the best pomade for my straight as an arrow and fine hair. I have read about this pomade and it is really something I want. Yes, I check reviews on pomades. It’s like checking the weather for me.

DIY Moss Terrarium Kit

First off, this kit has a dinosaur on it and IN IT. I don’t want to write anymore because that already should of sold you on why I need this in my life but I will. Second, terrariums are just cute and I want to live inside this one for a moment. I would like to say I’m a tender queer so I would love to make this and then give it to someone in my life.

Gallon Cold Brew Coffee Kit

Have you heard the Good Word about cold brew coffee? I tried it and now I’m addicted. I’ve been brewing it in like 4 mason jars but they are not gallon size like this one! Also I’ve been Macgyvering filters, so it would be awesome to have one specifically for that. A kit!

Nostalgic Bluetooth Turntable

My record player broke recently and it was a cheap one that didn’t sound great in headphones or speakers. Also it looked terrible. Look how cute this one is.

Silver Octopus Collar Clip

An online friend posted a picture of her deer antlers collar clip and I’ve been coveting one just like it since. The octopus is one of my favorite animals and I’d probably wear this every day.

The Sexiest Camera Strap Ever

It’s so pretty and practical and it goes with everything. And you can tell my mom that it’s better for my back or something.

For real though I carry around cameras all day and don’t use cases because I’m really good at being organized and if they were tied to me with this nice leather harness that’s made for quick shooting my life would be so much better.

Cookies

PLEASE SOMEONE SEND ME A MONTHLY COOKIE BOX DO I EVEN NEED TO EXPLAIN WHY. Just imagine waking up one day to a box of cookies on your doorstep. Guys. We live in a world where cookies can show up on your door step. All kinds of cookies. Cookies for me, cookies for you, cookies will bring about world peace just watch.

Groundwork Coffee

To enjoy with my cookies. And to be honest this will be gone in a week so if you hear of a Groundwork subscription coffee service that would be great.

Scissoring Boxer Briefs

So I look great when I eat cookies and drink coffee in my underwear.

Fleece Booties for Baby

It’s finally getting cold in San Francisco, and Tiny needs something to keep those little toes warm! Turns out socks are no match for squiggly newborn feet, so I want a pair of these to strap on. Size 12 months please because girly’s feet are huge!

Sex is a Funny Word

Okay, so it’s not really relevant for Tiny just yet, but in the meantime I want this book to show to all my parent friends (and kid friends, if their parents will let me!). A book for kids about sex that talks about gender and feelings and justice and consent and all sorts of bodies and joy?! Yes! Cory Silverberg’s What Makes a Baby is one of the best most gender inclusive books of all time, and I’m so happy this author is tackling sex, and I want this book on our shelves pronto.

Backpack / Diaper Bag

I’m out and about wearing Tiny and wandering the city most days, and I need a diaper bag that can keep up! I’ve been looking all over the place for a backpack I can use that has enough pockets to organize everything within easy reach, is style-y enough that it doesn’t ruin my outfit, and is supportive enough that I can carry it and the baby comfortably. I finally found this perfect specimen, so please buy it for me.

Rechargeable Magic Wand

Simone and I just exploded our second Hitachi Magic Wand (oops!), but I’m a die-hard believer and was about to purchase another one anyway. THEN I SAW THIS INCREDIBLE INNOVATION. A rechargeable Magic Wand that doesn’t require being tethered to an outlet but can also be used plugged in so as not to kill the moment in case someone forgot to recharge it?! Yes oh yes.

  1. I want everything on Mey’s list too, even though I now realize that the rainbow-colored bottle is kitchen tools and not really gay vodka.

Stef, those cat panties! I thought I was looking at a cat peeking into a box from the perspective of the bottom of the box. I was like, “Is this a poster? Some kind of cat toy I’ve never seen?” Nope! It’s cat panties!

  2. @laura-m If you are looking to do macro, there is always the option of going with a close up filter. I’ve seen some going for as low as $20(for a more common filter size). I’m thinking about going this route for myself as a macro lens for my camera system cost $$$, and I don’t have the option of going older Canon, Nikon, or Minolta macro lenses.

  3. On the topic of of books about traveling written by women, I recommend Tracks: One Woman’s Journey across 1600 Miles of Australian Outback by Robyn Davidson. I listened to the audiobook a couple months ago. It’s about traveling, but it’s also about a lot of other things (like racism against aboriginals) and other really interesting and profound topics, and I found it utterly compelling. Plus, the audiobook was read by an Aussie woman so it was super nice to listen to as well.

    • Seconding this recommendation! Tracks is an amazing book. My mom gives it to every woman in our extended family upon graduating high school. It’s a great read during times of transition and/or traveling.

      • You’re welcome! I went through a phase a while back where I listened to a bunch of survival stories (Into the Wild, Into Thin Air, Dead Mountain) and all of them were good, but Tracks had a narrative quality that really stuck with me. I hope you enjoy it!

    • @carmenrios I came to say exactly the same thing! Tracks is beautiful and odd and stubborn and unlike other travel narratives. Film is worth watching too, though it doesn’t delve into her inner monologue as much.

  4. I 100% recommend the Harry Potter Illustrated Edition book. I bought it for my birthday and it’s even more gorgeous that I expected. There’s something exciting on every page. get it get it GO GO GO GO GO

    • promise me that if someone gets you both the burr grinder and the infrared thermometer you’ll use them together for the perfect coffee!
(PS I broke my Hario Skerton jar and am now a Porlex convert. apparently the burrs don’t wear down as fast even if it’s not quiiite as consistent as the Skerton.)

  5. -Rachel that coffee grinder is half off right now! Make your dreams come true.

-Yvonne: best rice cookers? I don’t have one but god bless the internet and its overabundance of information/choices.

-I just got lost in the accessories section of Wildfang’s site. Had a laugh at the “SORRY I’M SUCH AN ASSHOLE” balloons.

  6. I want a FitBit for the same reasons as Chelsey. I couldn’t care less about how many flights of stairs I move in a day or have caller ID on my wrist BUT heart rate and sleep are such cool features!! I want them to make a model that’s cheaper and just has those features for those of us who just don’t care about the rest.

    • i have one for those features and it is wonderful! however sometimes when i lie in bed for hours stressing out about every little thing, it seems to think i am asleep, which i am most definitely not. :-(

      • That would be my ideal device! Riese, I am sad to hear that it registers lying awake at night stressing about every little thing as sleep :(

        • i actually thought it was 100% accurate and insightful until this one night that i barely slept at all and it said i slept a lot. however it did say i was often “restless” and also honestly just having it on somehow motivates me to try and get a good amount of sleep. i think because i know if i ever wake up and it says like, 4 hours 14 minutes, i’ll probably just give up and die instead of trying to make it through the day. i’m curious to find out how accurate it is at camp.

  7. I just bought the Harry Potter illustrated edition as my Christmas present to my mom. I am such a good daughter! (also, I want to immediately borrow it from her as soon as she’s done reading it so maybe I’m only a so-so daughter).

  8. @yvonne if you can get into a costco, they’ve got that coloring book and some other gorgeous ones by the same company! I saw them a couple weeks ago and was ver intrigued

  9. If you like a camp fire smell, Alex, this shampoo from Lush is highly recommended.
It makes your shower smell campy but doesn’t really linger in your hair.

I came home once to my roommates convinced something in the walls was on fire when I first bought it. It is also great for your scalp.

    • I clicked your link because I was so excited about this, but the description says it’s been reformulated to smell warm and sweet instead of smoky. :( Do you think it’s drastically different?

      • ah man, why would they do that???

I don’t know… it’s been a little while since I bought a new bar. :( I’ll probably pass by Lush before the end of the week, so I’ll pop in and give it a sniff and let you know.

  10. Rachel, I can confirm that the infrared food thermometer is lots of fun and actually useful!

Chelsey, have you been watching “Girl Meets World”? They have carried over some storylines and Shawn has made several guest appearances. A bunch of Cory’s family has actually. Still no sign of that little sister that disappeared upstairs for years though, lol.

KaeLyn, I also love “Inside Out” and cried as well. Have you seen “Wreck-It Ralph”? That one gets me too.

Maddie, there are some good jigsaw puzzle apps out there. I have one where you can make it super easy or super hard. With our two cats doing actual jigsaw puzzles is tricky.

    • Not to get off-topic Besides the Christmas one(which is on Netflix), what other episodes has Shawn been in? What about Eric? And he now also has a little brother who is in high school, which I don’t remember from Boy Meets World.

      • Oh geez… There was an episode where Maya got a new wardrobe that Shawn was in, there was a whole storyline about Maya’s crush on the teenage brother, another storyline about Eric and politics…

        http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2543796/?ref_=nv_sr_6

That’s the shows IMDb page. Shawn was in three episodes in Season 1. So far in Season 2 there have been 6 episodes with someone from the original show- Shawn, Eric or Mr. Turner. Mr. Feeney was briefly in the first episode and also in Girl meets Pluto.

        Hope this helps :)

      • I’ve been impressed that they have brought back pretty much everyone important from the original show in some capacity. Cory’s family has been on. Shawn has been in 5 episodes. Feeny and Eric have been in three episodes. Turner in two. They also brought back Angela for an episode this season. And I think Shawn’s dead dad appeared to him as well. Minkus has been in several episodes since he is the father of one of Cory’s daugther’s friends. More importantly Rider Strong has directed many of the episodes and Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel are co-producers on the show.

    • Yes, “Wreck-It Ralph” is also very sweet and made me do some tears and I love how it turned the princess movie on its head.

I bought myself Inside Out because I just couldn’t wait and I watched it again twice and then watched all the special features and it was worth it!!! It’s a film of incredible depth, even though it’s a movie for kids. Bing bong Bing bong! ::tears::

  11. Yvonne, there’s this Sony Bravia Smart TV that my parents have and they love it! Comes with internet connectivity and everything, including PlayStation Now compatibility so you can play video games right on it too!
I want so many things on this list, but mostly I’m asking for a Gal Pal hoodie for a gift because what the heck they look so good!!!

  12. Rachel- my dad’s had an infrared thermometer lying around the house for years and until about thirty seconds ago I had no idea that it even had a purpose other than ‘point it at furniture/your cat/your brother and see how warm they are’

  13. YESSSSS

I have unashamedly asked for socks for 3 years in a row (and also for a few years in jr high and high school) because warm wool socks are fucking expensive

  14. “…and also practicing how to curl ribbon over and over again in the middle of the night.”

Don’t open the scissors, just keep the scissors closed and use the flat edge. You don’t need the sharp side for the ribbon to curl, just something flat. I have a seasonal job wrapping presents at a local art gallery and I wrap so many things this time of year, I can probably wrap gifts/curl ribbons in my sleep. The scissors trick is the greatest thing I have learned there and has saved me from cutting my hand off.

    • You just changed my whole world. Seriously. I imagine this also prevents ribbon shredding from too-sharp scissors. Into it.

  15. that laptop stand though!! that whole etsy store! And also the whole thing about uncoated stainless steel cooking things @green, i feel that 1000000000% i just want pretty kitchenware forever. (does autostraddle have a williams-sonoma affiliate link? for #domesticqueers?)

  16. laneia, the southerner’s cookbook is lovely. my mom got it recently, and I really regret that I didn’t sit down and read the whole thing while I was home for thanksgiving. I did, however, assist her in making “bacon crackers” which are a 1950s culinary marvel featured in the cookbook and which are surprisingly tasty.

  17. Listen. Don’t buy Fallout 4. I have had no life ever since getting that game. I should be ashamed but I’m kind of not.

  18. Well, this just about covers my friends (and me. cause Eve’s Hollywood is coming home with me today.)

  19. Craigslist, in say late-January/early-February, is an awesome place to get home gym stuff. Also garage sales.

Or pick up TRX straps (or go super hardcore and DIY them with $20 worth of stuff from Home Depot).

  20. My Lesbian Coloring Pages (adult themes colouring pages) are now a digital download for only $3.99 you can buy and print as many as you need!
