Pop Culture Fix: Amazon Prime’s “The Wilds” Is a Lesbian Dystopic Slumber Party

+ Amazon Prime’s first YA series, The Wilds, dropped its first trailer today, and there are girls kissing and also the official synopsis is a real experience: “Part survival drama, part dystopic slumber party, The Wilds follows a group of teen girls from different backgrounds who must fight for survival after a plane crash strands them on a deserted island. The castaways both clash and bond as they learn more about each other, the secrets they keep, and the traumas they’ve all endured. There’s just one twist to this thrilling drama… these girls did not end up on this island by accident!”

+ Um. Chloe Grace Moretz’s live-action Tom & Jerry trailer is. Uh. Well. There’s Lizzo, and there’s Chloe, and then there’s a vibe that’s Roger Rabbit but less technologically advanced? I don’t know. Did they make this movie in MS Paint?

  2. The Wilds seems to have all the elements for it to really grab me, but for some reason the trailer just made the show feel off.

    I actually liked the Tom&Jerry trailer, probably just the nostalgia talking.

    Those 19 films should definitely fill the Hallmark-movie itch in my heart, but I sadly couldn’t see any gayness from the description.

    Wonder Girl sounds super interesting and we definitely need a female-led show to replace Supergirl. Also with the Amazons connection is it to much to hope for sapphic sides to this show?

    Uzo Aduba was so good as Shirley Chisom in Mrs. America that it will be hard to live up to her.

    After Glee (RIP Naya Rivera) it feels like female characters in Ryan Murphy shows have declined/stagnated in both quality of writing and quantity of screentime, or atleast the queer ones, so I am sceptical here.

    Totally forgot about Pose being a Ryan Murphy show, so yeah, the problem is definitely Murphy, because Pose is one of the best shows ever.

    I’ve never watched Saved by the Bell, but having trans rep means I’ll give it a shot. Any queer lady hopes or prospects on the show as far as we know?

    Maybe I’m being too sensitive, but having the first trans character on Charmed, a show very much about womanhood imo, be a transmasculine character feels like a statement to me. Just reminds me of what happened with Generation Q where the transfeminine actresses were announced well after the transmasculine actors… and then it turned out there were no transfeminine characters on the show(fanon sadly isn’t canon y’all, don’t @ me).
    Still glad we got trans representation though and a trans actor got a job.

    • The wilds would be so much better if it had any trans representation. Like how are we going to have a show about a feminist retreat gone wrong without true intersectional feminism.

  3. Personally, I don’t see a problem with a transmasculine character on Charmed. The Charmed universe has always included male allies. The issue with trying to include everyone is that you inevitably leave out someone. No single show is going to be everything to everyone. I could very easily question why they didn’t choose an actor of Middle Eastern or Latin descent (which as far as I know JJ is not). I look forward to the day that this isn’t even a conversation anymore.

    On the fence about Tom and Jerry. It always weirded me out as a kid.
