A+ Inbox LIVE! #2: Did You Get to Make Jam?

Hello hello! It’s our very second edition of A+ Inbox LIVE! If you’re listening for the first time, A+ Inbox LIVE! is where Riese, Heather, Yvonne, Rachel and I choose three questions from the A+ Priority Inbox and answer them live on a podcast, using amateur recording equipment and very little editing! It’s casual and honest and very 2006. You can also snag A+ Inbox LIVE! #1: Get Kicked Out of Chorus, for extra cool fun.

On this week’s show, the gang’s all here, and we’re considering the merits of liking one’s own comment, of sending and/or receiving an email after you’ve broken up, and the importance of being earnest when naming your sourdough starter.

Don’t forget that we’ve set up a super special A+ Priority Voicemail set up just for A+ members like you. Have something to say with your voice? There’s certainly no better place to say it than in a voicemail. And you can rest assured that no one will ever ever answer this number. You’ll only hear a greeting and a beeping sound. Bliss! Some of you have already called in and it was so neat to hear from you!

Your Priority Voicemail number is 209-877-7483. Maybe I’ll finally record a greeting this week!

  1. I don’t know whose dog is barking, but I … clapped?

Maybe my dog obsession does go too far?

I wonder how many podcasts it will take for me to be able to figure out who is who. I’m not done listening to this one, but so far I have no idea.

    • WELL RACHEL (hi Rachel from Rachel)

I am the one who sounds like Daria and has the deepest voice
Yvonne is the person who we call Yvonne a lot, I feel like she gets referred to by name in these a lot for some reason
Heather laughs a lot and her voice has a lot of affect and she has a Georgia accent
Laneia has a southern accent that’s different from Heather’s
Riese sounds like she’s from the Midwest (I think) and has maybe a slightly higher voice register?

I refuse to reveal whose dog you are hearing, that is a mystery for you to solve on your own

      • ps. my roommate’s name is Rachel which is funny because in 6+ years in France I have only ever met 3 Rachels. and it leads to a lot of “Hey Rachel, it’s… um… Rachel” messages back and forth.

have any of you ever dated someone with the same name? that could be an interesting podcast discussion!

The first time roomie Rachel’s boyfriend was over he and I were in the living room and she was in the kitchen and he wanted to say something to her. So he called out, “Rachel…” and then froze and looked confused. Finally he said, “I didn’t know who would answer.” He’s Jamaican so I told him he could just use the English pronunciation for me and the French one for her, which is handy.

        • OMG there are SOOO MANY CHLOES on dating apps in my neighbor hood it’s horrible I can’t swipe right on another Chloe !!! I just can’t date someone who has my name because what if we start sharing clothes AND a name ?

      • i feel so pleased that you referred to my voice register as higher, rachel kincaid, i feel i am transcending my congested jew reputation. the way yvonne talks is really distinct too i just can’t figure out how to describe it!

    • I HEAR YOU about the clapping because I clapped when Heather talked about HOGWARTS LETTERS WEDDING INVITATIONS.

  2. I just wanted to say that I really loved this podcast (and the one before!).

(I don’t think I’ve ever actually liked a podcast before.)

  3. I was going to say that I don’t know how anyone could come up with even one thing they didn’t like about Heather, but I’m really not a fan of sourdough at all, so if I friend-broke-up with you, Heather, my email list would probably just say “1. you like sourdough too much. 2. that’s it, that’s why we’re not friends any more”

  4. Yay that sourdough question was me (as some might have guessed from FOT I’m obsessed with making bread right now !!!).
Okay Heather you win at naming sourdough starters I’m gonna name it Mary Berry <3.

(Also 4H is basically the four houses at Hogwarts, right ? Like Head is Ravenclaw, Heart is Hufflepuff, Hand is Gryffindor and Health is the infirmary ? Wait where is Slytherin I'm sorry Slytherin I love you guys).

AAAND I've fallen in love with Sue Perkins.

  5. I was in 4H and raised sheep, you would buy a baby lamb in the spring and keep it all summer. In the fall was the fair where you showed them to get ribbons, then there was an auction where people would bid per pound. Then they got slaughtered and eaten, y’all. But I got 700-1000$ out of it. There was the animal raising aspect and also lots of arts and crafts. Also I showed horses. I love 4H!

  6. thank goodness conversation turned to the great british bake off. i did not know that fact about sue perkins and it warmed my heart so very much.

    mary berry.

  7. But what if the A-Camp Confessional required +10 HAIL MARY BERRY’S?

The Great British Bake Off has saved mine and my mother’s life. We started watching in the early days of her cancer treatment; I would drive home (3 hour round trip) or to the hospital and we would watch – always together. I have cried through whole episodes. We’ve spent many hours discussing techniques and Mum’s childhood memories and the power of baking and the importance of striding to be a good person.

My Mum also bought me a surprise KitchenAid which we named Icarus. Baking has always been my passion; so yeah, this + bake off = me crying right now. Can’t wait for the new season because we found out more bad news this week and Mum and I need a magical Fuck Off Cancer hour more than ever.

  8. Also we didn’t have 4H in Australia, but I’ve blessed to have a wonderful community of strong women (and my dad) who taught me all the things. Our local show is 2 weeks away and I HAVE MADE THE JAM /lemon curd/fruit cake/embroidery/knitting.

  9. I’m not usually super into podcasts but I LOVE THIS ONE!! Also starting gbbo made me feel 200% better about tv, and also the story about Sue Perkins made me cry? It’s fine. It’s not fine. It’s TOO PRECIOUS HOW DO I COPE

  10. That whole conversation about breakup emails was really helpful to me because I sort of just got a version of that. I am the recent recipient of a photo-dump via text message from my ex of a little over a month ago, and I’m trying to figure out how/whether to respond. I want to find a way to say thank you without opening up a whole conversation, and you gave me some things to think about, so thanks!

  11. This podcast is my favorite A+ perk.
    Thanks, you guys.

Also now I wish I was friends with Heather because I think I would cry if a Hogwarts letter wedding invitation showed up at my house.

Heather, I hope you write a wedding planning series some day like Carolyn and Laneia did because those were some of my favorite Autostraddle posts ever and your experience would be such a joy to follow along with because you are so fucking full of love and kindness and also who wouldn’t want to read about anything that incorporates Harry Potter in any way???

  12. I’ve never had any issues liking my own comments? I can write a comment, refresh the page and then like the very same comment. Y’alls way is fancy tho.
